Although I haven't ever had to show mine, when I was a volunteer tax preparer for the IRS, we required everyone to present their actual SS card, and also the SS card for each one of their dependents.

Not sure if Real ID rules have changed. I got mine in California 5 years ago, and I did not use my SS card, but I honestly don't recall if it was on the list of approved documents then. That would be odd to me since my SS card says right on it "FOR SOCIAL SECURITY AND TAX PURPOSES--NOT FOR IDENTIFICATION". But it is NOT currently on the list of approved documents for Real ID in California, so even if you brought it, you couldn't use it.

I hope you are following best practices for storing such important and confidential data.

Too many small, medium, and large companies don't properly secure electronic data as evidenced by all the data breach notifications everyone receives.

When I was a landlord, the requirements on requesting credit reports changed - primarily because they contained the SSN. It supposedly required a separate office with a lock and no ability to enter from another room. Might have only been for my state.

The SSA says that Pennsylvania is the only state that has production of an original SSN card as a requirement for getting Real ID.

I didn't need it when I got mine here in California.
And looking at the checklist, a Social Security Card isn't even an option for any of the requirements.

It is here. I had to dig out DD's original card for her license last summer. (It is VERY difficult to get a RealID here for a 16 yo, because they ask for 6 official documents including 3 dated within the last month with name and address on them, and most kids that age don't have that most of the time. I had to also go to the bank and have them mail me a statement for her savings account so that she could show that the statement was postmarked as proof of current address, and we (parents in general) had to ask the school to change the programming on the transcript system so that transcripts had the student's home address on them, too, even though they were never mailed, as proof of residency in the school district.)

Ironically, a valid passport would have been fine to replace 3 of the requested documents, but we no longer had a valid one because of COVID, as we had decided that if she couldn't travel abroad that year anyway, we might as well wait until she turned 16 and could get an adult version.

At one time, in Massachusetts, your social security number was your drivers license #.

I know you have to show it to get a marriage license in Tennessee. (Or proof of social security number)
