my dd wants the nook for Christmas.....might have to make the change myself.

Get Ipods or Ipads and then you can have both applications. That way you won't lose the books that you have already bought for your kindle. :thumbsup2

So far I like the Nook better. But I can download audio books on my Kindle.

B&N going out of business. Not sure the Nook will survive as a platform, but it is cool.

Okay, I understand everybody wants to give their kids everything they request (whenever possible), but if the OP already has a Kindle, and Consumer Reports ranks it better than the Nook, wouldn't it make more sense to give the daughter the better (if not cooler, bowing to DisneyBamaFan ;)) eReader - rather than the OP having to replace her own device as well as purchasing the gift one?

Tough to argue with this logic. :thumbsup2

If this does ever happen I am sure that Kindle would be more than happy to buy/takeover the NOOK and all of their customers.

You can share books on the NOOK, the NOOK has a color version and maybe the mom just WANTS a NOOK.

Did ya'll see that we are going to be able to gift Kindle books to others, instad of just giving gift cards from Amazon? That, plus the "catch up" LendMe feature that Amazon is finally allowing, will give the Kindle some nice new features in time for the holiday season.

Personally, I love the Kindle but I also have an iPad and that is far superior to anything the Nook or the Kindle could produce as a color ereader choice.

wait barnes and noble is going out of business????? didn't hear that

It isn't going out of business. I had this discussion with my friend who works for B&N district the other day. She said that the announcement over the summer had more to do with stock prices being low and Riggio et al not being happy about it and the company looking at all possible solutions to change that. She expects Riggio to eventually buy back the company and take it private again - which my impression is that she's in favor of b/c it'll help with better future planning and development if the company is private vs public as it is now.

She did say that one day her particular job could be on the line - but she's not worried about the company itself.

If anything, they'll just close down all of their brick and mortar stores and be online only - like Amazon. They already are online, like Amazon.

I'm trying to make the nook vs kindle decision myself. Right now I'm leaning toward the nook.

I enjoy the library feature on my Nook but I'm sure I'd have been as thrilled with a Kindle as I am with my Nook.

I really love having an e-reader.

DVCLiz (and Amazon :)) addressed the book-sharing issue, and, well, the OP didn't sound like she wants a nook - see "...might have to..." for hint :teeth:

Loads of places sell the Nook and it isn't a platform. The format it uses is the same as everyone except the Kindle uses (because the Kindle wants to try to force people to buy all books from Amazon).

Buy your daughter a Nook and keep your Kindle. There is no reason why you can't have both. If you choose to go to a Nook, don't rebuy your whole library. Do a Google search and download the scripts to strip the DRM encryption off the Kindle books. Then download Calibre and reformat the MOBI to ePub and upload it to the Nook. I have a Nook and buy Kindle books, pdfs, Barnes and Noble books, etc. Any can be directly uploaded to the Nook or reformatted and uploaded to the Nook. The Kindle can only handle Kindle books or pdfs, but I have heard there can be formatting issues with pdf books on the Kindle.

I don't even bother with the share functionality (or lack thereof when talking about Kindle). Figure out where your files are kept and you can email books back and forth just like you'd loan books to friends.
