I follow the A Beka curriculum (
https://www.abeka.com/ ). There are many different curriculums available for homeschool families, though. I was a teacher for 6 years before I started to homeschool. I taught 3rd grade for 4 years and 6th grade for 2 years. We found out that we were moving to Venezuela during my 6th year of teaching. At that time, my oldest DD was in kindergarten and my youngest DD was 2 years old. I had no idea what schools in Venezuela were like. I did know that there was a school for the expats, but I didn't know anyone attending. All I had to go on was the school's web site and what the company was telling us. I didn't want to go that route. So I decided to homeschool. I found out that I loved it, and I have been doing it ever since......even though we are now back in the states. A Beka is most like the curriculum I used while teaching in the public school system. It is like my teaching style, you know? My oldest DD is now in 7th grade. My youngest DD is in 4th grade. I am registered with the state as a homeschool family. My DDs do end of the grade standardized test just like all of the other students. I turn the scores and the attendance record in at the end of the year. We follow a typical school schedule. I start mid August most years. (If we have a fall Disney trip planned I may start a week or two sooner. I never start before August, though.) I take a week off for Thanksgiving. I take a week off for Christmas. Then we take a few days off for Easter/spring break. We start around 8:30 to 8:45 each morning. We take a 45 minute lunch break around 12:15. We typically finish our school day around 3:30. It is a full day!!! I teach the skills/lessons to my youngest DD first while my oldest DD does her seatwork (what is typically homework for public school kids, the book work). She skips the problems that she cannot work, the new skill that she doesn't understand. Many things she can do on her own, though, like review work, reading, etc. She works independently while I go through all of the 4th grade lessons. That normally takes us right to lunch time. Then after lunch I let my youngest DD do her seatwork/bookwork while I teach the lessons to oldest DD.
I do the field trips with our homeschool group. Not all of the members of the group use the same curriculum. A Beka is just the one that works best for our family.
