ER question... what is wrong with Dr. Carter?

We are really enjoying ER this season. I loved the tie in with Mark and Dr. Banfield. Great episode.
We recorded last nights ER to watch tonight.

I have read that George Clooney would return as Doug. I have not heard about Carol, but I hope so. I was hoping Sherry Stringfield would return as Susan too.

Carol was on the commercial last night as an 'old friend' returning!

I have not watched ER in years, so I am a little lost on some story lines.

I happened to flip thru the channel and saw Carter in the lounge with Angela Bassett asking to pick up shifts, so I watched the rest of the episode, I was crying by the end!
I will cry my eyes out if/when Carter dies, I cried when Dr. Greene died

so my question is, whose name was that on the plaque in front of the building carter was standing in front of?

i remember the last time I watched was around the time he got married, i think she was someone he met in africa? and the wife lost the baby? I forget her name.

oh and I am thinking the lady on the bypass machine will get Carter's heart. anyone else think this?

my predictions:
I think the lady on the bypass will die and Angela Bassett will adopt the little girl. I don't think Carter's heart would be any good with all the bad blood going through it with the kidney failure.
I hate to think that Carter will die, but the storyline others have written sounds possible, everyone else will come back for the funeral. Maybe Eric LaSalle's character calls them to come when he gets ill or does die.
I have a feeling that Carter broke up with Kem. He didn't seem to talk much about her and I can't imagine if they were together that she would leave him alone to go through his treatments.
I would like to see Abby return on more time to tie up that end. She just left and they were having marital problems. Are they happy now and still in Cruatia?
And yes, let us all know who will be living happily ever after. I can see from the previews of next weeks show that it won't be Morris. His detective girlfriend gets shot pretty badly, probably by the cheif as payback for Morris giving him grief about the kid he beat up. Would love to see Morris or someone else shoot him back, I loved the guy in Sex and the city but he is such a creap on this show.
I personally will miss ER, I have been a fan since the beginning even when it went crazy with some of the storylines. I am a nurse and always saying "they wouldn't do that" but still loved the cast.

I have not watched ER in many years (except the Mark Greene episode a couple months ago)..pretty much when Sally Field came back AGAIN as Abby's mom. Anyway, I got goosebumps when I read your post!!!

My guess is that he is on Dialisys. Didn't the knife attack a few years back (when lucy was killed) involve his kidney? Maybe he needs a transplant, or else he's gonna die and Anthony Edwards is going to make his appearence and escort him to the other side.....Doug Ross weeping at his bedside, Dr Benton showing a soft side and holding his hand while he gasps his last breath....The sharky one armed hospital admin who was killed by the helicopter sitting above griping about the soap opera-esque way the hospital has fallen into since he died.

Joshua Malkail Carter is the son of Carter and his South African girlfirend, he died and they opened the JMC Center in his honor.

My theory is this...

If you think back to the very beginning of ER, Dr. Benton got angry with Carter and have him a subway token to leave if he couldn't handle his residency. Then when Carter was attacked, Benton did the surgery and saved his kidney instead of removing it. Later in the show's run, Benton left but before he did Carter gave Benton the same subway token he gave Carter years before and told Benton to use it when and if he ever came back. Carter is probably in kidney failure stemming from the stabbing attack years ago and perhaps coupled with any immune problem he picked up while in Africa. Now, I think Benton is going to find out somehow and come back to donate a kidney to Carter...which would be sort of cool considering how tough Benton was on him. If Carter does die, I think Benton is going to use the token to get to the hospital and be by his bedside when he dies.

Either way, I am going to be a wreck.

I'm loving all guess's for the ending! I know I to will be so sad to see it go, I've watched from day 1 with all the highs and lows it was always my favorite show.
This season I think has been great with old faces popping in but Carter dying thats too much! I will cry like a baby, I cried last night! the next 6Thursdays are gonna be rough

Isn't it a little poetic that they had him come back on Valentine's day. The same time that he was stabbed and the reason he lost his kidney. This show is such a tearjerker every week.. Im sad that this is the last season, but I don't know if I can handle Carter's death on top of it...
