Meg, thanks so much for taking the time to tell us about the verticals. My hubby and I may consider trying one depending on how the rest of the schedule shakes out. :goodvibes

DH & I have attended 4 vertical tastings. You check in at the desk on the 2nd floor of CH. They escort you to the elevator. They serve you a glass of wine while you mill around waiting for the event to begin. Long rows of tables are set up facing the windows in the lounge. Ten glasses of wine are sitting at each place, along with a cheese plate. The 4 presenters sit facing you, with MK in the background.

After the introductions, it is recommended that you put your cheese plate aside until you have finished tasting the wines. The wines are usually from one vineyard, but can be from 2. Each wine is from a different year. This allows you to taste the variabilities of vintage due to lack or excessive heat, rain etc. Each wine is tasted, then the "experts" discuss it. They are very knowledgeable, but not stuffy or condescending. John Blazon is always there. He not only leads the discussion, he also unobtrusively educates the group so that no one is bored but the newbies are comfortable. The winemaker and a MS or WE are also present. We've been fortunate to learn from Evan Goldstein and Andrea Immer Robinson. Often they will talk about food and wine pairings.

After all the wines are tasted, each wine is voted on to find the 3 favorite wines of the group. Then you can drink the wines in your glasses, matching them with the really yummy cheese plate.

Meg

My family and I did a pairing at Marrakesh in 2006 - I didn't care for the food (that's a personal preference issue though) and I also thought the presentation was lacking in comparision with other F&W pairings. There weren't any menus, the service wasn't very good, the chef didn't really have much to say, and there was no dessert!!! :scared1:

My husband and my parents enjoyed the food, but it's not an event that we want to repeat.

Thanks for the info. BTW, which F&W Pairings have you done? What was you favorite and why?
I am also thinking about the Coral Reef F&W Pairing.

OK does anyone think that the South African Wine Adventure is likely to take place this year? It's not mentioned on the Disney website. My DBF and I have decided against the Cheese Tasting and looking at everything we think this might be the only thing I can do (too fussy an eater to do a set meal and don't really want to do Party for the Senses)

From what I understand (I think it was posted somewhere in this thread) that was a stroke of coincidence event, as the distributors or someone from a S African wine/food organization was coming thru the area and the event was put together as a result.

Sorry to be so vague, but if you want, the answer is more detailed somewhere within this thread...

You are correct. They were doing a big North American sweep to promote SA wines last year. I highly doubt they will be back this year. But if they are coming back it would be on their website www.wine.co.za . We had an amazing time last year! It was one of my favorite events of all time. Very intimate compared to PFTS.One compaint was not a lot of food but I was not there to eat.

I am also thinking about the Coral Reef F&W Pairing.

We've also done a pairing at Coral Reef, Le Cellier, and Rose & Crown.

Of the three listed above we liked the pairing at R&C best, but I fear that may have been a one-time event. It was a scotch & food pairing hosted by a rep. from Johnny Walker. The food and the alcohol were great - generous portions and they did not go cheap on the scotch. If it's offered again this year I'd highly recommend it - it was fun and very informative.

Coral Reef was also very good - great setting, wonderful food, attentive service. This pairing seems to get consistently high marks from folks on the DIS who attend.

Le Cellier was also good, but my husband ended up sick that day so it's hard for me to say that experience was the best. I know there are people who swear by it, but I actually thought R&C and Coral Reef were better than Le Cellier.

Here are links to reviews I've done of each F&W Pairing; the first two are from 2006 and the last two are from 2007 ... take a look if you have time. Hope it gives you a better idea of what to expect. :goodvibes

The Coral Reef pairing also includes a brief summary of the beer tasting that used to be offered by InBev ... Epcot discontinued that last year which is real shame because it was waaaaay better than the Sam Adams tasting.

Brenda are you guys going to try for the Sushi and Sake this year? I remember what a headache it was trying to book it last year.

Hi Shelley girl - how ya been!

We're booking a regular table at Tokyo Dining one night and are going to create our own sushi / sake pairing, much like what we did at Kimonos last year. Still have a bit of a bad taste in my mouth over last year's mess and besides, the only Monday we're at the Festival happens to be the night we're going to V&A, so it won't really work for us anyway this year.

What are your dates again? We're 10/8 - 10/17 ... are we going to overlap and actually be able to meet this year? :goodvibes

We are down Sept 27-Oct 4. Ships passing in the night!

We walked up to Tokyo Dining when we were down in June and had an amazing meal! 4 courses of sushi and sashimi. :cloud9: It was heaven! The down side is that they don't take the DDE card but it was worth it. The staff is terrific and the night we were there it was an all female sushi team. We got to sit at a table facing them and they were so nice chatting with us and giving us free samples. It was great.

You might want to check with Disney Dining - every month at Jiko there is a special food and wine dinner - the first Thursday of each month. I don't remember exactly what it's called and sometimes the CMs have a hard time finding it, during the F&W they consider it part of the events. We've been and have really enjoyed it. We're sort of hoping they'd make an exception this year and make it the 2nd Thursay of the month (when we'll be there), but I doubt it. It's worth checking out.
Reserve dinner
Signature dinner - just can't remember

Oh my goodness this info is wonderful.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I love you guys. The info I get here is far more informative than researching endlessly on my own.

It is so great to have a place to come and hear about people's experiences and opinions on things. I cant wait to get to the food and wine festival.
This year I will be even more knowledgable.

Thanks again to everyone.:thumbsup2

Ah, that's unfortunate. DH and I LOVED the SA Wine Event last year - being veg, there was plenty for me to eat, and way, way more wines than we could even sample a sip of! We were very much hoping there would be another one this year, as the price tag was very attractive as well!

They don't really consider it part of the events. The Jiko wine dinner on November 6 has already been offered for booking - and is sold out.

There is one on September 18 - it's a special addition as they don't normally do them that late in the month. This is in addition to the one on September 4.

Do you know what the October's schedule is for this?

thanks!!
