***Epcot Food And Wine Festival Info 2008***

Oh, I'd have to stay on property (those DVC points you know) but I don't have to visit the parks or restaurants...

or the food and wine festival. Let's see how this festival goes. If I can get off the preference I had for the special events and learn to love the food booths with the masses, then maybe it won't matter so much. Fortunately I do not have to book next November until this December (and I'd have to book early to get into the Beach Club Villas). If this November isn't good for me, I'm not booking for next year.
That makes sense. Regardless of this year's Festival, I probably won't be going in 2009, but that's due to budgeting, and I'm hoping to take two trips in 2010, which I think is cheaper then a trip in 2009 and one in 2010.

Hubby just had the foie gras listed on the current CA Grill menu, it was fantastic!

Well, it will have a lot to live up to, as the last time I had foie gras there was quite a while ago. Loved it then, too. :goodvibes

And ElizebethB (above from post #1406), you are not the only one frustrated by those that try to justify the decline. (I have read, and now believe, that many of them are Disney employees trying to dilute the uproar)

The decline is occuring all over WDW, and has been for many years.

I just figured that the F&W festival wouldn't be touched by the bean counters because it is so popular and profitable. But obviously I was wrong.

I believe it's better to wait and see what actually occurs rather than become Chicken Little and declare that the sky is falling. Maybe it's just me. I don't know if you realize that we're in a recession right now, but that could possibly be a factor.

I don't justify the decline at all. I expressed my own personal disappointment that there were fewer choices this year. But I also have the mindset from the first time I stumbled upon this event, quite by accident, during my first solo trip to WDW in 1997. To me, the entire festival were the food kiosks along World Showcase. I didn't know they had any special dining events back then. I didn't even book my first events until the 2003 festival.

Am I disappointed? Absolutely! But I refuse to vilify and finger-point over the changes this year. There's been a TON of speculation about what this festival will be like, and we won't know it until we see for ourselves.

We, like others, actually fell for it. And, for a few years, it worked. But, Eisner left, there is obviously a new management team in place, and the idea now is numbers -- always numbers. Get as many people to the parks and resorts as possible, give them anything awful to eat -- so long as it's a buffet and there is tons of that awful food available, streamline all menus so that purchasing product is cheaper, there is less inventory to store and less waste due to spoilage.

We've seen it coming for the last 2-3 years with the DDP, less elaborate and unique rides (how 'bout that DinoLand at AK -- every town has a carnival just like it), and now we see it with the F&W Festival. If I were in food and beverage at WDW, I'd seriously be looking elsewhere for employment because the writing is on the wall. If you want to spend your life turning out millions of Mickey waffles for the Chef Mickey breakfast buffet, WDW is for you. But, if your culinary aspirations are a bit higher, you're being abandoned by WDW.

Believe me, I don't spend thousands to travel to WDW for the F&W Festival for what I see this year! We were tempted to purchase DVC and are now glad we didn't. The thought of being locked into 40 years of attending a Festival like the one this year would really have me steamed!

I'm not a fan of the DDP, either, or some of the changes at the restaurants over the years. But I can't agree with your Dinoland analogy, since I'm fairly certain it was part of the Eisner era. And I am pretty sure that Toy Story Mania didn't come out of a box, so there's a little bit of creativity left.

The Disney bean counters are throwing millions of dollars towards fixing those Eisner mistakes at Disney's California Adventure, so maybe that's where all the festival money went.

And lastly, I'm one of those DVC members who bought because I enjoy WDW during various times of the year, not just the F&WF time of year. The festival played no part in my decision to buy in 2002. I don't appreciate the tone of your post implying that I must be an idiot for actually buying it. I've already gotten my money's worth on it.

It does seem that off property is starting to make more and more sense, though I'll be staying on property as long as the perks are good enough, (included transporation, package delivery, and EMH,) though there are several restaurants I'd like to try off property.

Yeah, I'd like to try Tchoup Chop.

I've been thinking about skipping the festival next year and maybe doing another early December trip. I'm already considering a trip this upcoming May. I gave up going over my birthday in November when the festival stopped overlapping it, but I might consider doing birthday trips again.

We used to travel to WDW 5-6 trips each year - with 3 or 4 of those during the wine festival. We were always getting teased by friends and co-workers "You're going to Disney AGAIN?" --- However, we always felt that our trips to WDW were special, and yes, "magical".

Over the last few years, we've only been going once other than the f &W fest. because it just hasn't been as "magical" as it had in the past (I blame the DDP - but really don't want to open that can of worms).

I hadn't yet booked our trips during the F&W fest yet - waiting for the list of events available (each year, we booked approx. 5 signature dinners, 2 reserved dinners, a wine school, a couple food & Wine pairings etc. (we had stopped booking the PFS because of the decline in quality and increase in price about 2 years ago). I had assumed that we would go 3 or 4 times during the festival as in the past (we fly in from New Orleans).

Now, I'm not sure I am going at all. If I do go- it will be for one short trip out of curiosity. I am interested in the Vic and Als dinner - but am having a hard time justifying $375 pp. To put that in perspective - we are currently in CA on a vacation to visit family - and we have reservations at Thomas Keller's French Laundry tomorrow night (If you're a "foodie" - you know the restaurant I'm talking about) - and that fixed price dinner is $240 pp.

I am very disappointed and dont' know what I'm going to do. Still thinking on it- Jill

Well, you could do what some of us are doing...booking a regular meal at Victoria and Albert's. I'd rather pay that then the "event" price.

So much disapointment:flower3: . Well, yes, the events this year are very pricey and even some nonexistent. At first I was disappointed, this being our first time and reading all the past reviews, we were looking forward to some of the events held in past years. But, I am still looking forward to dining around the world at the kiosks. Tasting wine at the welcome center and just lollygagging around the world. We made reservations at some very good restaurants every night, so we are going to treat those as our food and wine pairings and splurge on some fine wines we normally would not have ordered. We are now also going offsite for wine tastings and a special dinner. We are also VERY glad we purchased DVC back in 1999, we love staying onsite or being able to rent points for other vacations. Stop the poo pooing and be glad one can still afford a vacation at WDW. Just my two cents, dont flame me too bad:grouphug: .

While I know it has been discussed multiple times, 97 pages of posts are making it a bit challenging. What day, time and phone number will the booking begin?

Exactly how I feel! Dh and I loved the Food and Wine Pairings and always did as many as we could get in to. We had wanted to do some signature dinner, etc., but that won't be happening. We will do PFTS 3 times, I'm sure hoping they aren't changing it too much. And we are in the fortunate group who will be doing a Jiko's wine dinner, actually we are doubly fortunate because we are doing 2 of them. We're filling in with several offsite restuarants and some of our favorite on-site places.
As far as next year goes, we'll have to see how this year pans out.

What is the general consensus regarding PFTS? Is it worth the money (bearing in mind we've not done it in the past and therefore wouldn't notice any decline from previous years)?

DH and I went last year and had a good time. We are planning on going again this year. Its a nice night out food, wine, entertainment and you meet some really nice people.:thumbsup2

DH just told me the tequila bar is inside San Angel on the right. We will have to check it out soon.

Well, we poked into Mexico today, and there is no tequila bar. We asked the CMs, and they said that at this point no one's really sure what's going on with it and there's no estimated completion date. :confused3

We were pretty disappointed, the humidity was brutal today before the 3pm storm and some tequila and Mexico's atmosphere would have been nice. Thankfully we made it to the pub in time!

misscrossbee - DD, DM and I did it last year for the first time and thought it was great. This year, we are going back, and bringing younger DD, DS and DD's fiancee. We can't wait!!

Hubby and I have been going to PftS every year since 2001. It's one of our most favorite annual experiences at WDW and we generally go 2 or 3 times per season. It went from $99 to $125 to $135 in a relatively short period of time and no, we don't think it's worth the money anymore...but I rationalize it with the fact that I generally don't collect "Disney stuff" anymore. So we still indulge and "allow" ourselves the luxury.

We enjoy it and think it is worth it. If you like to try (as many times as you want) gourmet nibblies, an array of different cheeses, chocolates and pastries, sometimes gelato, wines from the entire globe in a party atmosphere with acrobats performing periodically then you will enjoy it.*

*Subject to change. This is based on past experiences and obviously it is subject to change but it will be fun to find out what this years will be like.

I agree with Disneyhumbug last year was our first year too. We are going with our two DS's. We can wait :woohoo: . It's not a sit down dinner its like a cocktail party with old friends. It's what you make of it. Our family has fun just being together add food and drinks and it just makes it funner:dance3: .

Hey Lori! Just wanted to say Jason and I agree with you on all this! We are excited to go and as for the Festival itself ... I think we will find a way to have a good time! ;) PFTS and all the booths and what ever free stuff they have will be a blast! Who knows what it will be like till we arrive but I am sure it will be fun even if we don't do a ton of extra paid events!
We have also made the "stupid" choice to buy the DVC and have loved EVERY minute of it and feel that it's been a great choice for us! :woohoo:

Yeah, I'd like to try Tchoup Chop.

You NEED to go sometime! It's worth the ride over!

My husband and I love the PFTS! This year again we are doing 2. We have taken NON-Disney people every time and they have thought it was one of the best events they have done. Great food, wine and people!

Thanks for checking forever42. I thought it would be amazing if it was there, considering it wasn't just a few months back. Darn, hubby and I were really looking forward to trying it.
