Envelopes @ the side of forum posts, what do they mean?

Ok, maybe its a dumb question, but what is the significance of the envelopes on the side of forum posts?
I notice some are red, blue, have a piece of paper sticking out (I assume its being read?), some have arrows, what does it all mean?!?! LOL

It's not a dumb question. The information isn't on the bottom of each page, but it does appear to be at the bottom of the individual forums. You can click here then check the bottom of the page.

The envelopes mean:
