My daughter bought an "Elf on a shelf" for my Grandson for this holiday season, and I remember seeing a thread last year about all the funny things people did with their Elf's, can't find it. Do you have an Elf and what types of things do you do with it?? How exactly do you introduce it to the child? haven't read the book it comes with yet. Tell me about your ELF!!

First of all, thanks for the memories that just put into my head, :)

My grandma always had a little elf she put out on her bannister at Christmas-time.. never knew the "elf on a shelf" story.. but this little elf was from my dad's childhood (60-some yrs ago)...

We (my 2 brothers and I) would stay at my grandma's house Saturday nights while my parents would go out to eat. I remember sitting on the couch about 10 ft away from that little elf, using rubber bands to see who could knock him off his bannister, hehe. Fun times! :lovestruc

Think I might have to ask my dad if he knows what happened to that little elf, and maybe get it out for my daughters. (I live in my grandma's house, so could set him up on that same bannister, :))

An elf came to our house for the first time last year and my kids loved it. They talk about him all of the time and can hardly wait until he comes back this year. His name is Bob and he showed up on our doorstep the day after Thanksgiving. We set him outside the door and found a doorbell sound online. So while we were all inside, I sat at the computer and played the doorbell sound. The kids ran to the door and found him sitting there. I had made up a little poem about what he was doing, etc. I didn't have the book that some come with.

Every night they had to put him to bed (shelf in their playroom). They left him some kind of snack - just make sure he "eats" it every night. Each night he would cause some kind of trouble: one night he threw our underwear all over the xmas tree, he put on the suit from our daughter's Ken doll and was found sitting around with the other barbie dolls, he was caught fishing in the fishtank, riding our son's geo trax, he would make a mess in the kitchen, one time they found him in the bathroom and he had forgotten to flush! I know he did a lot more than that, I just can't think of it all right now. It will definitely be tougher this year to come up with new things!

Your grandson will love this! Have fun!

We had our elf come for the first time last year, the day after Thanksgiving. That was the day/evening we started Christmas decorating so I thought it was a good time for him to make his appearance. About a month before I started talking about elves, how we might get picked this year to have one visit us etc. My boys were 7 and 3 1/2 and they both loved it! He came with a letter from Santa, stating how the boys were to come up with and agree on a name for their elf. His name is Candycane (because he has little candy canes on his elf hat) Toymaker. He caused all kinds of mischief last year and my dh was about to send him packing back to the North Pole! The boys know not to touch him, they can hold him briefly/give him a kiss goodnight but he normally stays in the spot where they find him in the morning.

The boys found out that the elf has green pee, since he got it on the bathroom floor and didn't flush the toilet. He tried to make muffins one morning but left the egg shells in the batter and he left a note saying he didn't know how to cook them so he gave up. My MIL was living with us last year (and she said that was her best Christmas ever, watching the elf and the boys each day) and one night the elf took her car to McDonalds-parked it very much the wrong way in the driveway, had pillows on the seat and a couple stuffed animal friends helping with the pedals, he left happy meal wrappers and drink cups all over the floor but a note saying if the boys helped him to clean it up they would find something special in the glove box which were two gift card for McDonalds. That was the funniest thing he did and the kids got a huge kick out of it. Since my MIL lives right down the street now, I think the elf will continue the tradition of taking her car out joy riding to the fast food joints in the middle of the night. Oh, I should have him leave the car in our drive way though! The elf took green and red streamers and threw them around our ceiling fan in our room and took my ds's stuffed animal for a ride on it. He was found in the freezer, in the washer and dryer too. He even went out and bought two small christmas trees and ornaments, decorated them and placed them in the boys' room along with a little webkinz. We woke up Dec 24th to a tp'd downstairs! My dh I think was going to have me committed or something when he saw that. But the elf just had to do one last mischievous thing before he left the next night. After christmas last year I bought a lot of stuff on clearance to use for him to leave the kids little things at night.

I got way too into this last year and my dh is really hoping Candycane Toymaker doesn't show up this year until Christmas Eve, when it's time for him to go back with Santa! I would sometimes forget to move him to a new place at night before I went to bed. So I'd jump out of bed and go run around trying to think of some where new to put him. I just wish I had learned of this years ago. It really made our Christmas extra special last year and I hope I have a few more years where my kids truly believe!

My niece has been asking here and there throughout the year if Jingle is coming back and says she misses them.

Santa sent a book (that he asked me to make.. ahem...) about Christmas elves and all of the jobs they had and how SOME elves got to go stay with children until Christmas. Jingle was the last to be chosen because he was sent to the extra special house of my niece and nephew. Ok so he stayed at my house but I had to "help" him do things for them. LOL!

Then after thanksgiving there was a big box and in it was Jingle and a letter from Santa saying to take care of him and how he might get into mischief and if they were good jingle was allowed to give them special treats.

My neice and nephew came over 3 days a week and some weekends and Jingle was always doing something silly and always had presents for them. He tried to make the presents have something to do with what he was doing (a new book that he was reading to all of the stuffed toys, monkey toys when he was playing in the ficus...)

Jingle had a special basket thing we usually have plants in on the wall that they'd put him back in and where he could watch them. Jingle had a special bag that he'd put the surprise in too.

Jingle left christmas eve but left them a present christmas morning. They were really sad to see him go.

To be honest so was I... I can post pics later if you want?

I would LOVE to see pics of your Elf!! I want to do this this year, I just emailed myself at home to remind me that I need to look this up tonight. :)

Probably the best one with my kids was when "Buddy" decided to make cupcakes for breakfast. *he made a huge mess! (mostly just flour though so easy to vacuum)

I had big plans to send a postcard over the summer to the kids from Buddy- but I forgot! So that may happen this year.

I loved the one that started a facebook page and the Elf that had a family!

Thanks all for replies!! I can't wait to start this after Thanksgiving, my GS is going to love it. Please post pictures would love to see them. Do you usually make up a list of idea's for the elf to do, or do you just wing it everynight and come up with something. I started reading the thread that mad4themouse posted, it seems like people felt they started it too early, do any of you feel that way? I don't want Jake to lose interest, maybe after Thanksgiving is too early, maybe Dec. 1st or so? Opinions?

Starting it the day after Thanksgiving, it's not that the kids loose interest, it's that it becomes kind of hard to keep up with! :rotfl: There were times I'd go to bed and then realize he was still in the same spot as that morning so I'd jump up and just move him to a new room as I was too tired for him to be mischievious that night! The kids had an absolute blast each morning, often before 7am, running around with my MIL (who lived with us last year) trying to find the elf and find out what crazy thing he did durning the night! That's why I kind of want to start the day after Thanksgiving again, it's so much for them.

I kind of just winged it, as far as the ideas go. I got a bunch on-line and some of them I put my own spin on. This year, hopefully soon, I will write down a list of things to do. That way I wont forget about using some of the silly little gifts I bought last year at the Christmas clearance.

My boys left a note with the elf on Christmas Eve, asking Santa if maybe the elf would be allowed to visit during the year. He must have approved the request because the elf showed up in Disney World with us in March!
