Has anyone else found the Disney elevators to be really frustrating? I don't have much of anything to complain about from our trip - it was awesome! But whoever designed the elevator system wasn't thinking!

First of all, the elevators were very small. Not too big of a deal since there are 4 of them & space on a ship is limited. Second, the elevators were set up 2 on the left, 2 on the right with about 10 feet separating the two sets of elevators. One button runs them all so you have no idea which of the 4 elevators is coming. You have to stand about 15 feet back from the doors with your eyes constantly scanning to see which set will open. THEN you have to RUN to get to the elevator before the doors closed. That is *if* there is enough room for you in the elevator when it reaches you. Not to mention that there are always those lucky people that wander up to the elevator right when the doors open (after you've waited 5 minutes) & get on - while you are waiting at the adjacent elevators. Bad setup.

Needless to say, my family took the steps most of the time! An easy option for some, but I felt so bad for the people with strollers & wheelchairs!

LOL!
We only took the elevator when we had the carriage with us. Even then, I would usually take the stairs and let DH ride. No need for me to be taking up space in there from other people who need it.
That was one advantage to being on deck 5...not too far to go up or down,no matter where we were going. ;)

Only the midships elevators are spaced apart like you mention. The forward and aft elevators are closer together. But, yes, trying to get an elevator is quite frustrating. We ended up taking the stairs a lot. But that was okay since we needed to do something to work off all that wonderful food we'd been eating.

I agree with mom2tiggers. We stayed midship so those were the elevators we used. I would stand between the two sets looking back and forth. I don't think there is a "ding" sound when the elevator arrives, just the lighted arrow. Then you have to run to catch it. And since you're not standing right in front of the elevator waiting other people come up and get on first. The elevators are spacious in the very back and very narrow in the front so you had to squeeze in and out. The stairs were a much better option.

Maybe on the new ship (if it really ever happens) they will design the mid-ship elevators a little better.

I never really thought about it but since you mentioned it I do recall being very frustrated that I had to stand so far back to see which elevator was coming!

I asked my neighbor how much weight she gained on her Disney Cruise last year. She said none....they always took the stairs! Sounds like a good idea for more reasons than one!!!

I always take the stairs on our Disney cruises. Expecting to do the same when we cruised the Celebrity Infinity, I was pleasantly surprised. They had much larger elevators and they were very convenient. The midship elevators were on the side of the ship, so we got to look outside while riding them. It was always a pleasant experience.

We take the elevators most of the time to avoid those exact problems. Sometimes just for the fun of it one of us would take the elevator from deck 3 to deck 9 and the other would take the stairs. Guess who got to the top 1st. THE STAIR CLIMBER!. When we would do this the kids would get a kick out of running up the stairs with us to beat the elevator. A great way to keep the weight off!

A pet peeve of DH's and mine are the people (especially teens) who take the elevator to go up 1 floor or down 1 floor.

And I thought I was the only one who had a complaint about the elevators. My son would stand in front of one and I the other because we missed the elevator so many times. We did end up taking the stairs a lot more than I wanted to.

Aren't the elevators fun???????

I can't do stairs because of a bad knee(I tripped over my own feet at a rival WDW park
a few years ago) anyway....

My only vice with this was this...and this is not the elevators fault......

We would push the button....

wait for the elevator.....a longgggggggggggggg time.............

as the elevator approached....

people who HAD NOT waited a longgggggggggggggggg time.....

would barge in the elevator before we could get on.

Well, I'm a relatively nice person.....but after about 2 or 3 times of this happening...I had
to start saying "excuse me but we were here first and have been waiting a long time.."

Do you think it mattered....nope....they would just stand there and look at me like I was
nutzoid.....but maybe they didn't do it again.......to somebody else.

And I have more thoughts on this type of stuff going on....see my trip report.....

Maybe there should be a suggestion box to Disney and we can all send this complant and suggest they use some of the castmembers there to help those who have been waiting a loooong time to catch the next one stopping there, or put one on each elevator to yell out "going up or going down"and hold the doors open until you can get to which ever side you need to be on. We too had to wait a long time to get on there and yes we also took the stairs alot of the time. Just a thought for the future cruises. I don't think it would take much to impliment this procedure with the elevators and everybody would be alot happier with this part of the cruise. Just a thought!:bounce:

My sons and sometimes my lazy DH would take elevators. I always took the stairs, no matter what level I was in at the time.

DB has cerebral palsey but hopefully he can do stairs from deck 5. I have to take elevators @ work (freight elevator) - it's big but boy is it slow!!! Take the stairs if you can. As far as I'm concerned - there has to be elevator etiquette. People who think they're clever and sneak onto the elevator should have a little bit of guilt. I really didn't think they were that small though. Can we stop for a minute and think about it - you're on a ship in the middle of nowhere - do you want it to be much bigger? lol

Poking fun,

We also ended up taking the stairs a lot, but we did figure out, the only elevator door that would open, would be the one we were not standing in front of! Murphys law!!!

I guess I am in a minority here, but I though the elevators were quite efficient. You did have to pay attention to see which one arrived, but most of them have indicators above the elevator to show which floor it is on. I have been in luxury hotels during conventions with much worse elevator conditions!

I agree, though, if you can manage stairs nothing is very far away! And the art in the stair wells is fabulous!

We were never in a hurry, so waiting or walking were both fine with us!

We took the elevators all the time on the Wonder . DS is in a wheelchair so we could not take the stairs. We encountered a few rude peopke who would cut in front of us and one man even said to his wife (loud enough for us to hear) how we should be ashamed that our DS's stroller/wheelchair took up almost all of the elevator and how other people had to be "packed in" on account of it. Most of the time I am happy to say people were very gracious to us. I would love to see if more elevators are put on the new ship.

They way I look at it is show some common curtesy to those who are in wheelchairs or on crutches because you never know when you might end up on them and you will be the one waiting for some kind soul to hold the door open for you or give up their spot on the crowded elevator. Never take anything for granted. DH was diaganosed with Parkinson's at age 42 so we are adjusting to this and the fact that we never thought it could happen to us. So those of you who push ahead of others in wheelchairs and those who are just alittle slower moving than you, just remember what goes around comes around.
