I have an I-phone and wanted to use an electronic boarding pass, but I was wondering if I still need a paper boarding pass to get through security checkpoint?

No, the electronic boarding pass is all you need

They have a reader.

Somehow I don't trust electronic boarding passes. For example what if your cell phone battery dies?

So I would have a paper boarding pass on hand even though most of the time I would not need to get it out.

Just FYI you typically can't have an electronic and paper BP at the same time. If you get an electronic BP and then get a new paper BP later, the airline will often invalidate the electronic BP (or vice versa). Typically the electronic BP will be fine and if you are at an airport without readers you can always print out a paper BP there. The only airports that might not have them at this point are the teeny ones where it's not that hard to get a paper BP if you realize that they don't have readers. MCO will definitely have readers so I wouldn't worry about that.

Most airlines (if not all), will not let you select and electronic boarding pass if the airport is not equipped to handle electronic boarding passes.

Electronic boarding passes are so much easier, less stuff to carry around and if you ever did have a problem with your phone you could always just have one printed later (pre or post security).

I don't believe Columbus Oh has electronic readers, I've seen at Orlando. Granted I've only flown SWA in last 7 years.
