My Dentist recommended a Phillips Sonic-care toothbrush today at my apt. Wondering if they are really worth the money/hype? Thanks

I buy cheap Crest Spin Brushes. They do a much better job of cleaning your teeth than a conventional brush.

Yes, SoniCare toothbrushes are definitely worth it.

Absolutely, especially if you have gum problems and problems holding the other type. Look for store sales, dollar-off coupons and rebate offers.

I found this deal for around $145.
Philips Sonicare HX6733/90 HealthyWhite 3 Mode Platinum Edition Rechargeable Toothbrush 2-Pack Bundle (2 Power Toothbrushes, 2 DiamondClean Brush Heads, 1 UV Sanitizer with Integrated Charger, 1 Travel charger, 2 Travel cases)

I was having some gum problems and my dentist also recommended to get an electronic toothbrush. I've been using one about two weeks now and I love it, she also recommended a waterpik to go along with it and my mouth feels great and super clean, I would never go back to a normal toothbrush!

I had one, but it kept getting gooey and nasty inside, even when i rinsed it off after using it...infinally tossed it out- any advice?

Sonicare toothbrushes are definitely worth the money. My husband and I haven't had a cavity since we started using it and our daughter has never had a cavity. Whenever we go to the dentist, he always says how we barely need a cleaning as there is little to no plaque build up and we have incredibly healthy gums. I attribute most of this to the Sonicare.

Which one do you have???

Mine has different speeds so a more gentle gum care speed could be chosen. There are different models available. DS's first one did get gunky inside eventually. The newer one we got did not have the same hollow inside.

Electric toothbrushes are absolutely worth it. I have an Oral-B electric toothbrush since the smaller round heads fit inside my mouth better, but both Sonicare and Oral-B are excellent. They really do clean much better than a regular toothbrush. You'll get a better deal at Costco or online somewhere rather than buying directly from your dentist.

Absolutely. I had gum problems. Grafting done etc….I was told by a Dentist that my oral health was pretty bleak long term. And I was only in my 30's! I got a Sonicare and (knock wood) haven't had a cavity since nor have I had any further gum issues. The Dentist I have been going to for the past 8 years has said my mouth looks great and there is no reason to think I won't be able to keep all my teeth well into my Golden Years.

Some can be expensive but, cheaper than gum surgery! You can also get one as other people have mentioned, at Costco and they aren't too expensive.

There's two I'm looking at..the Soniccare healthy white or flexcare plus?? The healthy white kit comes with two brushes, etc for $140 and the plus kit comes with one brush, etc for $159 with $15 off coupon? Any thoughts?

Yes, but you have to brush the correct way - get under your gums - use light pressure - full coverage. And floss. I now spend 4 minutes each time I brush which is a lot longer than my manual brush, but I'm doing a better job. Get the more expensive one. The cheap $30 one doesn't look like the same thing. You can probably get away with replacing the brush head twice a year. The battery on mine has lasted for ~4 years now. My wife liked hers too. While she's brushing I tell her what a wonderful job her brush does on the tile grout!

My cousin, who practices out in CA, recommended we do not use electronic toothbrushes. He said that too many people use it incorrectly and end up pushing their gums back. I had been using an Oral-b for 10+ years and went back to very soft bristle regular toothbrush and waterpik.

Added: I was also told by several dentists that for women, cavities often occur with hormonal changes. I've only ever had cavities once in my life, right after having my first child!

My Dentist swears by the Sonicare (he does not believe that all electronic toothbrushes are created equal). I have been using one for years, and it is totally worth it and makes a big difference. When I use a regular toothbrush now, my mouth still feels dirty to me. We did not initially start DD with a Sonicare as we wanted her to learn to brush her teeth properly. We switched her to the kids Sonicare at around 8 1/2 after her pediatric dentist said it was a good idea, and it has made a lot of difference for her too.
