Electric toothbrushes..are they worth it?

I had one, but it kept getting gooey and nasty inside, even when i rinsed it off after using it...infinally tossed it out- any advice?

I used to have the original style with the wider connection where the brush attaches to the base, and mine did that too. You had to pull the brush head off and wash and wipe out the inside at least once a week, or it got really nasty. The newer version has eliminated the wider hollow connection. The brush head is a thin stick where it connects to the base. It is a HUGE improvement. You still need to pull off the brush head and wipe the connection area occasionally, but it is nothing like the older/original style that got totally nasty. I would suggest looking for one of the newer styled versions. I think they still sell some of the wider hollow connection ones- so just stay away from those.

Love mine. got it a couple of years ago on Amazon, paid around $80 and there was a $35 rebate, quite a deal. The replacement heads are expensive but usually get them a BJ's. Mine is an Oral B

Thanks- I will look for that, which brand should I be looking for? I do miss that 'clean teeth feeling'

It is still Sonicare. I think they have several models that have the new style brush head. I think there is just one model left that has the original style round hollow brush head. Look for one that has:

The older style that get messy inside look like:

And I will also say that Phillips customer service is great. Twice since I have had it the handle part stops working. Just completely dead. Both times they have sent me a new handle. The next time I might just get a new one. The ones out now look fancy! Black handles and such.

Mine did that, but cleaning it every 6 months with hydrogen peroxide when I put a new brush on it solved that problem.

We recommend them in our office as well. I have used one for 20 years, they have come down in price for the basic model and that's all you really need. I have gotten them for as low as $29 with rebates (they are offered occasionally). Replacement heads are cheaper at Sam's Club.

I've been using my oral b since 2003 and it's still going strong. I need the smaller round brush head to get all my teeth. I always run the battery all the way down and then recharge. The target brand brush heads also work, which are cheaper than the brand name. You use less toothpaste as well.

A big yes! My dentist said he likes what he is seeing, and asked me what I did differently. I told him that I started using it!

We purchase our's at either Sam's, Costco or Kohls. Right now Kohls has their 30% off and a rebate so that might be your best deal.

I've never had great teeth. Switched to a Sonicare a year ago and have had zero cavities since. Dentist has been very pleased. Got one for under $60 on sale on Amazon. Don't go spending $150 on one. There are better deals to be had.

I am a dental hygienist and I recommend the oral b elec brush with the round head.
I feel it fits better and you brush tooth by tooth 3-5 seconds moving a little to get in between teeth.
You don't go back and forth with it and some models have a pressure sensor if brushing too hard.
Make sure you change head when bristles get a lil smushed or after sickness. Average every 3 months.

Btw I am also a huge fan of the water pik used on low pressure

I got a Sonicare a year ago and love it! I have the base model (the easyclean, I believe) and couldn't be happier with the results. I used to use Oral B, but found that it never left my mouth feeling as clean. The Sonicare definitely does. I didn't bother going with one of the more expensive ones. I think mine was about $80 or so. The heads are pretty pricy at $30 for a pack of three, but I tend to make a pack last the year. Instead of changing the head at the recommended three month mark, I extend that to four and see no ill effects.

I have dental issues and my old dentist recommended a Sonicare to help improve my oral health. It made a big difference in how much plaque has to be scraped off at cleanings among other benefits. My current dentist (also my brother) highly recommends the Sonicare as well. I had the old style handle for years (with the gunk problem as well) before passing it on to DS10 and buying myself the slick black Diamondcare model at Bed, Bath and Beyond. When I bought it I used a 20% off coupon plus they had a mail in rebate as well. I keep an eye on their sales to pick up new heads with a rebate. I don't take it on vacation and find my teeth just don't feel as completely clean as they do at home.

Absolutely! Love mine. My teeth feel super clean and I always have great check ups. I just wish I could get my son to use one. He has a crest spinbrush but says the sonicare "hurts" him. If you do have multiple people to use one though you can just buy different heads and share the same base. Much cheaper!

My DD said the same thing so I bought her the kids version (got at Target). She loves it. She has used it for years.

Absolutely worth every cent...We use the Oral B ones with the small round heads, they make a huge difference to a normal tooth brush. So much easier with the smaller heads to get to the back teeth and behind the back teeth.

Found my daughter was able to clean her teeth better with it than a normal brush too.

We went away a few yrs ago and I didn't take the electric toothbrushes with us, just the normal ones, our teeth had that yucky furry feel to to them - no matter how much we brushed them..As soon as we got back home, we were back onto the electric ones. Never realised how much better it made your teeth feel.

Will never go back to normal brushes again
