I am completely uneducated in the world of Ipods and such.

DD has tons of music...both on CD and on the computer that has been downloaded.

When you open up the ipod nano it comes with itunes software. I am under the impression that all the music she already owns(whether on CD or downloaded) can be run thru the itunes software and put on the ipod nano for free. Am I correct? She doesn't need one of those itunes cards or to subscribe to any itunes service does she? Another mom I've been talking to insists that you must buy those itunes cards or subscribe or something but I dont' think that's necessary. So, let me know, how does it work?

Basically, whatever music that is already on your computer will automatically be put into iTunes when it is installed. If she wants to add more music, she's going to have to do it manually, but there is a user's guide for the iPod that walks you through the process really well.
So, you can do it for free, right? That's my actual question, not the "how to's" of doing it, DD13 can figure that out. I just wanted to make sure she can put any music she already owns into the software and get it on her ipod without having to subscribe to anything or buy those itunes cards.

Yes. iTunes comes with the iPod, it's free to install and use. You only have to pay for music if you download it.

Yes if you allready have the music on your pc or on cd's you can migrate it into the iTunes software then put it on the NANO you don't need to join the iTunes store etc and pay for songs if you allready have them on your system.

Thanks!
That's what I thought but since I've given this advice to another mother too, I wanted to confirm.

My ipod has about 600 songs on and I didn't buy any of them from itunes. They are all from CDs that I own. It's very easy to put songs from CDs into itunes (If you are connected to the internet when you are downloading, it even names them, attaches all the information about the song so that they are in categories.
