Edible "potions"

DS8 is having a Harry Potter theme and my DH is hosting a potions class. He wants the potions to be edible so we're brainstorming things that we can put in them that would be fun and edible. So far we have flavor pearls, fizzy drink powder, and white apple or grape juice. Any suggestions? We'd love something that floats.

Ooh! I did some similar things for halloween parties. Made ice cubes with gummy worms in them and colored cubes with food dye so that as they melted the drink changed color. There's also this tutorial on color changing lemonade!

You can also make milk cubes in fun shapes with silicone candy molds. We did strawberry milk in rat molds and ended up with pink floating rats in some drinks.

You can also put a small drop of food coloring in the bottom of clear plastic cups and let it dry. Do this ahead of time. Then give each child a cup and have them do some kind of spell (we made up something--I think it was "predictus" something or other) over the cup as you're pouring (obviously clear) Sprite into the cup and it immediately turns the Sprite that color. I used red (Gryffindor), blue (Ravenclaw), green (Slytherin) and yellow (Hufflepuff) for my son's party and called the spell a "divination" spell (we had "classes" and Divination was one) that predicted which house each child would be sorted into.

You could get some of that edible slime. That's fun as long as hands are squeeky clean first!

Mentos in Coke or other soda. While the standard trick in a soda bottle can shoot and spray several feet high, if you do it in plastic cups, it’ll just bubble up and foam (over the top if the cup is filled high). Still fun, less messy. You can also freeze the mentos in ice cubes for a delayed reaction.
