Thats our contribution to this thread?

Feel free to post this on the thread of the things people say that is wrong.
On this thread....it's uncalled for, and unappreciated.

I also wanted to add that my dd outgrew it also and she had it very bad (now almost 17).

You have gotten some great info. regarding creams/lotions.

To add to the usual which you already know of - not normally bathing everyday, cool water temperature, pat dry and lots of lotion afterwards - I found that (and won't help you right now) 100% clothing only helped tremendously especially pjs at night.

Our grandson's dermatoligist told them to use a cream called Aquaphor. You can buy it over the counter. The chlorine is the culprit here.

+1 on the Aquaphor. (Just make sure it's not in your carry-on.) All of our 3 kids have had it to varying degrees and that's what the Dermatologist recommended for us. It works great! We all use it in the winter for dry skin too. A few times when the Eczema has gotten bad we've made a 1 to 1 mix of Aquaphor and over the counter steriod creme (1%, I think) and that seems to calm it down. Needless to say, we bring both on all vacations- especially when there's a pool involved! :)

What the others said and I always travel with at least one top sheet so I can block the detergent from hotels/rental home sheets. It's me that has very sensitive and allergic skin. I moisturize right away and I avoid chlorine like the plague-we have a chlorine filter on our tub/shower at home.

You are right, daily baths are bad IF you don't super moisturize afterwards. In fact, just one bath without lotion or vaseline is so damaging to DDs skin, you will see whelps and redness within a few hours. So her ped recommended daily baths, and that she sit in them for as long as she wants. When she gets out, I pat her dry and immediately coat her in vaseline (the point is trapping the moisture in). This routine is our only lifesaver!

Mikki'smom, we have used Aquaphor in the past. I found it good, but not much better than vaseline (but I was also being really picky because I can go through an $8 tube of Aquaphor in a few days :scared1: ).

This is also what my youngest daughter's allergiest recommended. I am happy to say, at 3 1/2 she only gets flare ups now, mostly in the early spring. As a baby, she was covered head to toe, it was horrible.

She also had (has) the egg and peanut allergy. She outgrew the egg one and I am hoping she outgrows the peanuts (we actually go to the allergist today for her annual skin test). Hopefully your daughter will outgrow them.

Ask your ped for a prescription cream to keep on hand for the flare-ups. It helps us. I agree with everyone about the hotel sheets. We use only free & clear detergents, they don't bother her skin. Good luck, it's so sad to see them so itchy and hurting.

I'm 46 and have it bad! My dermatologist told me zyrtec and eucerin cream.. I have also resorted to the tanning booth, yes I know the dangers but for me it is the only thing that works. My flare ups are the worst in the spring, and I was told this year was one of the worst for skin issues. I know this doesn't help and Im so happy that others have had their kids outgrow it, but I didn't.

ETD to add that she told me about baths... baths of over 30 mins in luke warm water or a cool shower is all I am allowed. Baths she explained need to be long so the skin can rehydrate.

Yep, that's what I have to add. Everyone else has given their advice on how to help the eczema, something we have battled in our house through the years. What works one minute won't work the next. As for the whelp/welt issue - it's good to make clear what is actually being talked about. It's a common error that many people make, so why not try to clear it up. Is that so wrong?? :sad2:

Four of my kids had/have it pretty bad. Ds11 outgrew it for a bit, but it comes back. Although I haven't used prescription steroids on him in many, many years, his skin is still faded.

DS1 has eczema and we just recently found out it was related to food allergies. We had tried everything and the only over the counter lotion that worked for us was Cerave cream. It comes in a tub like Cetaphil but Cetaphil made DS eczema worse. Now that we have eliminated the milk, eggs and nuts his eczema is gone. When he has something he is not supposed to it comes back in the same place so we know he has had a food he is not supposed to and have identified several other foods he is allergic to like peas. Our allergist RX cutivate cream for when he has redness and it works. The redness goes away within a day or two depending on how bad it was. He also recommended frequent bathes with moisturizing immediately. He said we could use Aquaphor but said Lard does the same thing and costs so much less. You can buy a whole tub of Lard for $5 that will last you forever. He said the key is to lock in the moisture so we use the Lard at night but not during the day just because it is so greasy. It does work. My husband was joking with me and ask me what kind of doctor am I taking our son to that recommends Lard as a moisturizer! HA HA!

Sorry, but it's the holier than thou attitude that's wrong. Everyone else understood what she meant without the clarification or the need to publicly and cruelly point out her mistake.

Baths are actually bad for eczema... they dry out the skin. My DD5 gets eczema she usually bathes every 2-3 days.

Also, I totally agree with the recommendations for Aquaphor, which is what we use. It works much better than vaseline. I keep a tube of Aquaphor out on the bathroom counter and DD will apply it herself when she has a dry or itchy spot. We also use eucerin lotion (mentioned by another poster) for dry skin for our family.

Topical Elidel worked well for DD when she was a baby/toddler and got terrible recurring diaper rashes/eczema. According to our dermatologist, although the FDA warning applies to all Elidel, the studies linking it to cancer were on an oral version of Elidel.

DD2 has always had eczema. I give her daily baths and then coat her in vaseline. When she has a breakout, I give her Rx topical steroids. They are starting to lighten her skin (is this permanent? :scared1: ) and I don't like using them, especially since she has frequent flare-ups.

Anyway, we are on vacation and we are in the pool several hours a day. As soon as we get out, she gets a bath and vaseline, and that helps, but not enough. She has redness in all the usual spots, and even some blisters. We are only on day 3 and I foresee a rough week for her.

Will giving her Allegra help? Or Benadryl at night? What other things can I do to help her out? TIA!

I don't know if there is any medical research to back this up, but my next door neighbor's son has eczema and when he spend time on our ssalt water pool, it clears up and he says his skin feels so good. this child can't even use soap very often and was told not to bath until he just had to, everything irritated his skin. So anyway, maybe try to find a place with a salt water pool and see it that helps. Best of luck.

Thanks for all the great advice, even the comment on whelps. No biggie!

I will definitely head to the store and get her some of the dry-free lotion. All the Aveeno lotion I have is just as greasy as vaseline. In fact, I bought her some Aveeno sunscreen and it was so greasy it slid right off her, even when I applied it 30 mins ahead. Didn't seem to work well, but who knows.

So thanks for the info. It's good to know what works for everyone. :)

It probably does work, I know the ocean salt water used to clear up my sons acne. Salt water works wonders.

Count me as another mom whose kid with eczema has pretty much outgrown it now. You've gotten good advice here, just wanted to add my support!

My pediatrician said daily baths are too drying on the skin. Try every other day it might help. I use Cetaphil Cream in the jar & it helps like nothing else I have used for myself. My Dad also suffers & uses the Cetaphil. I only get Eczema flair ups now if I skip on the Cetaphil after a shower.

Hey there! I think you're at WDW for your vacation, right? If so, head over to the Crossroads shopping plaza and go into Bath and Body Works by the Goodings. They sell a baby line there called Mustela which is flat out the best thing I have ever seen for kids with eczema. I used to work in a dermatology office and we sold that line there. In fact, my nephew has it and it's the only thing that has cleared his skin up!

It's a blue and white bottle and they have a ton of different stuff in that line. GL!

Thanks again for the tips and support. Daily baths are the only thing that keeps her exzema at bay - but this chlorine is a killer! Definitely too drying on the skin. But she loves to swim, so I'm doing what I can to help her.

I have given her the Allegra the last two days and it seems to work. Dr. Girlfriend, I will go by there this week and get her some of that. Great tip!

Thanks everyone!
