My parents are heading to WDW with us in late August. My father (64) is relatively stubborn when it comes to "accommdations" for his arthritis and knee problems. We lightly suggested that he rent an ECV from an off-site vendor, just in case. He doesn't want to do it ahead of time because he is certain that he'll be fine (his words not mine). What is the likelihood that we can get an ECV from off-site relatively quickly while we are there? We arrive on Saturday, and I can see us ordering one on Sunday afternoon/evening after he's walked a bit.

Take a few numbers with you. You probably could get one by the following day without much problem. You might even be able to get one sooner, depending on the company.

we went to disney back in 2004 with a relative who needed a ecv for everywhere but the room. back then i was very uninformed. when we went to registration the woman who checked me in gave me the number for a company that rents ECV's. we got an evc within an hour. i really don't think you'll have problems getting one.

Or you can do the research ahead of time via the internet. There are many ECV vendors in Orlando, you can find a list of some of them on this board. I personally have rented from Randy's Mobility with wonderful service many times. Just google something like Orlando Scooter Rental and you'll see.

A few years ago my mother (only 91 at the time) came to visit me and did not want to use an ECV for Epcot. I asked her if she could walk from her apartment to the nearby subway station (two long blocks in NYC) and her response was she could if she needed to. So I then said "and back" and after a short pause continued "three times in a row". She gave me a look that only a mother could, and I explained about distances at Epcot. Anyway, we spent eight hours in Epcot and she came out exhausted even with the ECV. She agreed I had been right. And it is now 4½ years and she still tells people how much she enjoyed that day.

Please ask him the following questions. Here are the suggested answers to go with them.

1. Are you disabled (even temporarily)? Yes.

2. Do the people you are traveling with, such as your family, know you are disabled? Yes.

3. Do you expect to meet anyone you know during this trip who may not know you are disabled. Probably No!

4. Do you expect to meet a bunch of people who you will probably never meet again in your life? Probably yes!

5. Is there any reason at all that you should care what these people think about you? Absolutely No!!

6. Will using a wheelchair or ECV make for a better vacation for you and your family? Absolutely YES!

If you check the disABILITIES FAQs thread, you will find a list of companies that DIS posters recommend in post #2 of that thread.

I will be 65 in Jan when we rerturn to WDW. In 2005 I did not have knee issue(torn meniscus) or arthritis and did not use an ECV and I was miserible and held my family back. In 2007 and 2009 I rented ECV in parks and what a difference for all of us. But I still had trouble getting into the parks as it is quite a long walk from the busses, esp MK I found. Used a cane and stopped a few times. This time I plan to rent one offsite even though I know there will be a hassle with the buses. You must weigh what you are giving up by being stubborn and think of what you are doing to the rest of rhe family.n the long run remember WDW is not cheap and you want to enjoy it abnd have all pleasant memories and the same for the rest of your family.
