DH and I woke up to sad news this morning, our friend's (DH's childhood friend and now co-worker) wife died suddenly and unexpectly in her sleep last night. She was in great shape (ran college track with DH) and was a doctor. We had just attended her 30th birthday party. We had just been trying to convience them to book the OGT rate on Thursday night and come with us. Looks like DH's work trip to India is going to be canceled. Such a wake up call on how precious life really is.
I'm so sorry to hear this; what a tremendous shock for you all. I hope he has a lot of family and friends to offer support through this awful time.

I'm so sorry to hear this! Of course it hits pretty close to home for me since Dh died suddenly at 32. He was also in great shape. He had an undiagnosed genetic heart condition that we had no clue about. I wonder if your friend had the same heart disease? I had never heard of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) before Dh's passing, but I hear about it all the time now. Too many lives taken too early. :grouphug:
I just love that you travel so much with your kids and seem like such a great mom. What a blessing your husband gave you while he was here :thumbsup2. I work with the elderly, for whom death is often a blessing, but in the young, it's always a tragedy.

I'll let the newcomers know if I have extra FE's to send their way.
I can always come up with more gifts. I also have extras of one cabin gift I had to buy in bulk, so that's easy.

How can we make a list for the newbies to know who to give to? I have a feeling there will be more (which it appears several of us can accommodate) if VGTs are offered. Maybe another tab for the newbies to give to? Let's just play "How many tabs can we add to aggravate Tammy?"!!!!:lmao::lmao::lmao:

So sorry to read your sad news. At my age, we expect it - but dang! You kids are too YOUNG for your contemporaries to be passing. Hugs to you and your dh.

OK, I know I should of had this taken care of before now but I have put it off and I know that someone will have the answer so I don't have to go back and read the whole thread. What shuttle service are most of you using to get from the Miami port to Fort Lauderdale Airport?
I think I had checked once before and it said that you had to have a cell phone in order to place a reservation. As we are from Canada and plans here are terribly expensive for out of country we may not even bring our cell phones. Is there anyone who will be taking the shuttle that we could travel with and split the cost?
Thanking you in advance.

Audrey

I'm with you Audrey. I should have taken care of this before now but I also need to get to Fort Lauderdale airport from the port. I thought Disney was making a list of folks that needed to get to FLL but haven't heard anything lately about that.

Thanks everyone. Please keep my friends and their families in your thoughts and prayers this week.

They believe it was an embolism, same thing that took my Dad from us before his time. The NCAA is now looking into requiring testing of all athletes for HCM. I hadn't heard much about it until it was on a show I watched. My sister's BF's wife was taken from him in a car accident on Christmas Eve a few years ago. I agree, too many lives taken to early.

Your kid's are lucky to have such a strong and amazing woman as their mother.

:grouphug: I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. :grouphug:I know from experience how difficult it is to lose a friend so unexpectedly. :grouphug:

We're using SAS Transportation from the port to FLL. We have 7 in our group thus far so the cost is $13 per person. I don't recall how many they can accomodate in a van, but you can contact Steve and ask him. If you need to link to my reservation, let me know. We have two other Disboard families joining our van.

:grouphug: Prayers and so much admiration for you! My DH is on his second bout with cancer and I learned at an early age to appreciate each and every day as a gift since another is never guaranteed.

We've made reservations with SAS as well. I checked out a few other companies and found them to be a bit more expensive.

What time is your flight out of FLL? I've got reservations with them as well, but if we can join together and drive the $$$ down I'm all for that. Ours leaves at 2:30. :thumbsup2

I've booked with SAS as well. You don't need a cell phone to BOOK!

What you need a cell phone for is - the driver waits in the cell phone lot and someone in your party needs to be able to call him to alert him that you have your luggage and are on the curb. The rate is what it is - more of us won't make it less. But it WILL mean that they will send more shuttles - so when the first one fills, off it goes, and so forth.

Since you don't know what departing group you are in, or exactly what time the ship will be cleared for all ashore, it's kinda hard to pair up with another family in advance. However, I have had a kind (and well tipped) porter allow me to call on HIS cell phone.

Thanks, our flight is at 2:20. I guess I will just contact them and make ressies. It sounds like I don't really need a cell phone as there are quite a few that will be taking the shuttle. What time do you generally get off the ship. I plan on staying on and having breakfast rather than rushing off due to the later flight. Let me know your plans.

Like you, I don't plan on rushing off the ship ASAP. A leisurely breakfast sounds quite nice. How many in your travel party? I could adjust my ressie to include the extra passengers. :goodvibes

We are newbies like I have stated before. We are bringing along two fun cute kids 5 and almost 2. We believe we will be driving back to Michigan from Florida and so we will more than likely have car seats with us. Does anyone know if there is a place to store them? Also any other tips for the cruise would be much appreciated. I have read a lot of this bored and the amenities are mind blowing.

I have heard that the cabin steward will occasionally store your luggage, so you may luck out and get them to store your seats, but don't count on it. Are you bringing a booster for the 5yo, or harnessed seats for each? You could probably fit atleast one seat in the closet, and if you have a booster for the other, it could go under the bed.
Our DS will have just turned 5yo, and is big, so I purchased a cheap booster (low back) for our drive from SF to LA and then for the day in Miami area. He doesn't ride in that at home, but wanted to bring something as small as possible.

Our flight is at 12:30 so we plan to get off the ship as soon as we can. Last time we cruised, we had a later flight so we were able to linger.

In all my cruises I have never heard of them storing any luggage or car seats, but that doesn't mean that it can't EVER happen, but I wouldn't count on it. Depending on the size of the car seats, they ay fit on the bottom of the closets.

I just emailed my TA last week. She said she hasn't heard anything from DCL yet. She said to be patient, though. They are still taking names for the lists. So, I'm still holding out that they'll have a bus to FLL.

GOOD Morning, Happy Cruisers!

The issue with a bus to the airport as opposed to a shuttle is - especially if you have an early flight - it takes longer to fill a bus than a shuttle van. It's going to cost you, either way.

We don't know HOW they're going to disembark us. This is the first time in Miami. In PC, once the ship is cleared, you can get off in the order you're in line. In LA after the Hawaii, we had to wait until our "color" was called to get off. It took FOR. EVER. If you have an early flight, be sure you let guest services know IN ADVANCE.

Luggage storage space outside the cabin is limited. Ask your room host, who will ask the boss.

Happy news from me - We got to spend time with another granddaughter last night. She's 16 and has autism. She actually TALKED to us. We got a smile or two. AND she hugged me good bye (touching is an issue) That was HUGE and I am thrilled to see how 'well' she is doing.

Happy Day, everyone!

Good Morning Fellow Cruisers,
We set sail in 7 weeks,
that is 49 sleeps!

Did you know?
The third locks that we will go through is a trip flight lock that will lower us 85 feet. It is Gatun.
