Ebay Disney Pins?

I'm looking for input on buying Disney pins on ebay. There are several "mystery" (you don't get to choose them) lots out there with pins for around 1.20 each. I was thinking of buying 20 and then both of my kids could have pins all ready to trade when we get there, rather than buying each a starter kit for $24.95 a piece. Do you know if you can buy the pin lanyard by itself at Disney and about how much does it cost? Thanks!

Yes, you can buy a pin lanyard by itself at WDW for $5.00-$6.00.

I'd be leery of getting genuine WDW pins for that price though. Have you done any research? I've read posts in the past about how people have gotten "junk" pins.

Lanyards are $5.95 for kids to $9.95 for adults but there are plenty for around $6.95 for adults as well. Please avoid those sellers who have pins up for auction for so cheap, those pins are "scrappers" which are overruns or seconds not approved by Disney, they should be "scrapped" hence the term scrapper. Basically these are considered fakes. Please pop on down to the Collectors Board, we have a list there of sellers many of us have had personal experience with, both "good" and "bad" sellers. If you have any questions please let me know, I'm not the "scrapper police" (as I've been rudely referred to in the past) but I am somewhat knowledgeable in this hobby, my whole family does this so I'm edumacated a little bit. LOL :)

Thank you, that's why I was asking. We didn't pin trade last year, just purchased a few pins that the kids saw and wanted -- we didn't even get a lanyard. I thought they might want to get into it more this year. So, I really don't know much about pin trading. What are the rules for trading at Disney and how do they determine if a pin is real or fake? I'd hate for my 5 yr. old to walk up to a cm and ask to trade a pin only to be told, "sorry, that pin isn't authentic or tradeable." Talk about ruining the moment.

We have had very good luck buying pin lots off ebay; I think if you buy from someone reputable I would hope you'd be getting the "real deal." Pins that have the Disney back stamp are tradeable, whether it's just the Disney logo or the pin trading back stamp...I would also think that a "nice" CM would accept a pin from a 5 year old even if it wasn't "legit."
Also, I actually have a ton of lanyards that I got when I bought pins at the disney store last year that I could just send to you if you're interested, that way you wouldn't have to buy them and I'd get a few out of my house LOL!

I bought 20 pins on E-bay this year for 1.28 each I think. I checked the seller's comments from other buyers first. This seller had a long, solid history of great pin sales with happy customers. The pins I got, I was told, were boxed sets originally. Something like set of 8 for $25 or so? I can't remember the seller's name off the top of my head. Check their sales history to see if they sold pins before, and if the customers were happy!

The main problem with feedback is that most people don't know the pins are scrappers until they get to Disney and try to trade with anyone other than a CM, then they are told "your pins are fake" and it's too late to do anything about it via eBay. That's why I suggested dropping in on the Collectors Board, because we are aware of this problem and like everyone else we too want cheap traders. :) Anyway, there is a list of ebayers that are good to buy from. I'd avoid anyone who's pins for under $2.00 or anyone who has a lot of large lots up for auction, IME those are people who are selling scrappers, they also get very defensive when you question them. Of course there will be a few here and there who are just clearing out their collections, sometimes they will have pins up for good deals but you just don't know until you try.

OP, come see us down below, personally I won't spend over $3 for traders and I usually pay a lot less. :)

I wanted to let you know OP, if you do get scrappers the CM's will not refuse your trade. They may take your pin and pocket it but they won't refuse it. Now those "professional" traders (that make everyone in the hobby look bad) won't, they won't hesitate to tell you you have garbage pins, but the CM's are really nice about it. And, some of the hobby traders (like myself) are nicer about it too. :)

Just checkd the ones I bougt on ebay and they all have stamps!! Phew cuz they were cheap !!!!

I have yet to see a CM refuse a trade w/ any child or any adult for that matter. If the CM (and many of them are pretty clueless about the 'authentic' pin versus 'scrapper' pin) thinks that the pin is not really 'tradable', they will usually just trade w/ the person and then toss it in their pocket instead of putting it on their lanyard.
As far as getting scrappers on ebay. Buy the pins you want. There are many scrappers that are so close to the original that you would have to check each and every pin against the original issue which is EXTREMELY time consuming and not necessarily an easy task. I just bought 20 pins from an ebay seller that allowed you to pick however many you wanted for 1.20 a piece. I didn't want to get too many in case they weren't good quality. They all look fine to me, and I'm not spending my time trying to 'authenticate' the legitimacy of each and every one. As I've previously stated in other posts, if Disney was really concerned about scrapper pins infiltrating the trading 'world', they would do something about it. But evidently, they don't care enough to address it. I usually trade about 200 pins on a trip. I am not spending crazy amounts of $$ to do it. I used to get some pretty good deals on clearanced pins at the Disney store but they haven't been carrying pins lately (at least not around here). Oh and BTW, many of the Disney store pins were not nearly as good of a quality as the rack pins at WDW. :confused3 Actually, many scrappers were way better quality than the Dis Store pins.
Technically, a CM is not supposed to take a pin in a trade that they already have on their lanyard, but I've seen many of them do it anyway. I've also seen them trade for a non-Disney pin too and that is a huge no-no too. But they don't really enforce their own trading rules. That is why I say, that Disney doesn't really care about the authenticity of their pins. If they were concerned about scrappers they could find a way to fix the problem.
So the point to my post is.... buy the pins you want to buy from ebay or wherever. Go to WDW, enjoy pin trading and have fun.
Oh and if you do decide to try to pin trad at DTD....
DO BE CAREFUL. Many (not all of them though) of those traders are 'shady' and will take advantage of the 'newbie' pin trader. They will try to get you to go into the store and buy them a particular pin and then trade it for one that is much less valuable. It's best as a rooky trader, to stick to trading w/ just the CM's. Many people like to take advantage of the 'newbie' in trading.
Best of Luck, Have a Wonderful trip, and happy trading!!! :goodvibes

I bought some pins off ebay. They were really cheap. I paid $21 for 15 pins. They all had the Disney stamp and Mickey backs. They traded great with no problem. My 5 year did the trading. She had the time of her life.

Better be careful englishrose, those scrappers that they sell on ebay have the same disney back stamps on them too! You just might have gotten scrappers if they were cheap. Didn't you know that all of the cheap pins that they sell on ebay are ALWAYS scrappers? :rotfl2:

I agree with everything in this post. I realize the serious traders want the integrity of pin trading to go back to how it was before scrappers, but that is never going to happen..they are out there. So even if you start out your trading with "legit" pins, the first time you trade it YOU may end up with a scrapper-they are NOT always obvious, and even if you can find it listed on a website as a POSSIBLE scrapper, there is no way to know for sure. Then a few months later, you trade that pin back, and now the scrapper is back in the system. I see NO way to stop this. ( know lots of folks say, well if everyone would stop buying the cheap priced ones, that would solve it, well that's not going to happen.) The only way for ANYONE to be 100% CERTAIN that they don't trade or receive a scrapper is to trade original Disney receipts along with their pins. I really don't see this happening.

So OP, buy the inexpensive pins that have the Disney logo on the back and trade away. It's fun, your kids will have lots of fun with it. It's easier for us to trade with a CM because the kids can pick out which one they want, and which one they want to give up. Too much bargaining to deal with when it's another trader.;)

ETA: BTW OP, I don't think that 20 pins is going to be enough! It is really addicting, and that number of pins will go in a flash! Have fun!

Ok, that post was uncalled for Stitchlovestink. Your sarcasm doesn't come off funny but mostly rude. Yes, all scrappers have the backstamps, all mine do anyway. I've never seen a pin from eBay that does not have the backstamp on it. And Stitch NO ONE said they are ALWAYS scrappers, you really should read before you post.

I did read. And that is what is/was implied. I buy my trading pins mostly from ebay now (scrappers or not) and if Disney cared about it, then they would do something to fix what some traders see as a problem.
Englishrose, my apologies, if I offended you. I was truly joking. Hence, putting the teasing prior to posting the comment. I hope you didn't get scrappers, but I understand the reality of buying trading pins on ebay.

I was not offended !! I took the post in tha vain it was posted !! Funny!! I go to Disney cuz I love it and no big deal if my pins are fake I will still have the time of my life !! Stitch don't giveit another thought !! To those who came to my defense THANKYOU!! But I am a tuff skinned ol'gal and no hurt feelings here !! Let's talk FUN Stuff like when are y'all going back !! Me on Sept 12th!!!

I saw nothing much funny in it at all but everyone reads what they will. :) I will continue to post MY personal experiences and state that most large lots I've received have been full of scrappers. They are MY experiences not anyone else's. I will continue to buy my pins from eBay and mousepins and a few other websites I know of, but I will also continue to post about scrappers and try to put a stop to them. And yes, Disney does care, so does eBay, that's why they shut down people who sell fakes. It takes a lot of effort and patience but it does work.

Rose have a great time in September!! I'm going back for sure in December and hopefully in October too. I go to DL tho, not WDW.
