Eat Beat-updated 9/25 Yak & Yeti

After a great lunch at Le Cellier, we hit Stormalong Bay and spent the afternoon there until the rain began. Then we stopped in the Club Lounge for some snacks. I did not take too many pictures of these, but will post the ones that I did. Each day there were appetizers between 5 and 7 along with wine or beer. The most tantalizing was a lobster salad, followed by crab rangoons. There is a spicy chili sauce to go with these and there is usually cheese and olives. Each day there were sliced green apples with caramel sauce or peanut butter and jelly. All nicely presented.

We didn’t eat too much because we did not want to spoil our dinner appetites. First night, we had Tony’s Town Square planned. However, DD and DS were more interested in Space Mountain so DH and I dined on our own. Will post a review on TTS as we move on, suffice to say that it was not spectacular.

What a wonderful upgrade to club level you got! I've always dreamed of getting an upgrade.

I'm really enjoying your reviews. Thanks for sharing, I can't wait for more!

Hi there, yes there was quite a bit of pixie dust falling on us that day!

If you don't mind, what is inside a mammoth?

Welcome! The mammoth comes several ways. If you know what a turtle is, it is very much like that, only better! it is either pecans or cashews, covered in caramel and then dipped in chocolate, dark or milk. I usually get the pecans with the dark chocolate. I have one home that I will eat during the week to help transition back to work! They are heavenly.

On Tuesday morning we decided to visit MGM –we still don’t call it Hollywood Studios—and enjoyed Toy Story Mania and some of the other attractions. We had an ADR at Sci-Fi, one of DH’s favorite spots. It is so cool in there and that was a pleasant retreat from the intense August heat. We think the theming in Sci-Fi is the best at Disney. Eating in the cars, watching the old movies, and just the right amount of interaction with the CMs. Since DH and I had reservations at La Hacienda for dinner, I suggested splitting a lunch, but he was quite hungry and opted to have his own. It was so dark, the only picture I got was of the desserts. Sorry about that. DH had the chicken sandwich, which he felt was lacking on the amount of chicken used. DD had a turkey BLT , which she enjoyed, although she left half since she rarely finishes a meal. DS had the burger and pronounced that it was a 7.5 on his 1-10 scale. Top marks are reserved for the Beaches and Cream burger. I ordered the ribs and thought they were very good, very meaty and lean. The portion was huge and I wished I had split it with DH because I hate to leave food on the plate, but I could only finish a couple of the ribs. DH helped out and there was not much to return to the kitchen. For dessert, DD had the milkshake, DS and DH had the sundae and I had the red velvet cheesecake.

I thought the cheesecake was one of the best desserts of the trip. The other desserts also scored well. Overall, a great lunch. The loop of movies, as always, was fun and entertaining too.

Still searching for the receipt so will add in price detail later, used 4 credits here.

After our fun and tasty lunch at Sci-Fi, the kids took off on their own and DH and I were on our own for dinner. We knew this in advance and had an ADR for La Hacienda. In the 20 plus years that we have been going to Disney, we have never eaten at the San Angel Inn, largely because the reviews for that restaurant have never been glowing. However, with every trip, DH would suggest that we go there, only to be knocked down by my reports that it did not receive a favorable rating on the disboards. While I firmly believe that everyone should try things for themselves, I was a bit leery about doing this with a cuisine we do not normally eat. However, with the opening of La Hacienda, I gave in and made an ADR. Sadly, we did not take any pictures in the restaurant. However, I will post some snack pictures at the end to make up for my lapse!

I was somewhat surprised by the interior of the restaurant. It is nice, but given the prime location on the water, I expected better use of the windows/tables. Many tables were situated in a way that only one person would see the view. Other tables had the view blocked by columns. In one area, there was no window at all. In addition, while the décor was nice, it did not have a Mexican feel to me and seemed sparsely decorated. All of this may appeal to some, it was just not my cup of tea.

We decided that we would each order something different. I ordered the shrimp tacos, which I thought were very good. They reminded me of dishes I have ordered at some of the chain restaurants (CPK), but I enjoyed the dish. DH ordered the pork tenderloin and was sorely disappointed. I tasted it and cannot blame him. Pork tenderloin is such an easy dish to get right. This was all wrong. Completely overcooked and dry. It was on a bed of incompatible veggies and sweet potato puree. Luckily the taco portion was large and DH shared that with me. For dessert, DH ordered the sorbet, which arrived in a melted mess. I had an apple dish, which was somewhat burned. Although we brought these issues to the attention of our waiter, he offered no replacement. Just as well, since we were full and a late snack awaited us in the Club lounge.

Some have asked whether this restaurant would be good for watching Illuminations. It really depends on where you sit. Since we finished up dinner at 9, we were in a location that would have enabled us to see some of the show, but a heavy rain broke out and we knew we had the kids ponchos, so we departed to find them and keep them dry. Well, we missed the show and the kids were soaked, but our intentions were good.

Now, for some treats. One of our favorite snack spots is Goofy’s. We took some photos of the yummy items in the case while we were waiting for my mammoth order. Here you go.

Next up, WPE and the Plaza, with lots of pictures.

As for our meal at La Hacienda, the cost came to $72 and we used two TS credits.

Appreciate your R&C review, luckily we are not ordering steak so hopefully our meal will be better but I am sorry yours was ick

We too tried La Hacienda and I ordered the shrimp and DH the pork...well his pork was just like your DH's pork and it was gross....problem was my shrimp tacos were light your mouth on fire hot (and I can handle spice) so DH took them over and I picked at the pork

Noth a place that we will be running back to anytime soon

Sorry you had a bad meal at La Hacienda too. Maybe the place has some growing pains. My tacos were not hot at all and I really am not a spice lover, so maybe they got enough feedback about that so they changed it. I agree though, not going back anytime soon.

We've had meals in R&C before that are okay, but I will not get the steak again. I think the fish was fine, so if we go back, I'll get that. But it is not on my near term to-do list.

We are going to Food and Wine for the first time on Columbus Weekend and the only TS I have set is for Biergarten because my nephew will be there with his family. Otherwise, I'm hoping to eat around the world!

Oh, no! I am getting more and more nervous about our ADR at La Hacienda! I'm not cancelling it because DH really wants to try the place; in fact, it is his only request this trip. I guess if it's really bad, I'll just order a 2nd margarita and I won't notice as much!

We had a wonderful experience at San Angel last summer, I really think it is worth a try at least once.

Thanks for your reviews. Looking forward to more!

We all have our must-do Disney dining spots. For me, that place is Wolfgang Puck Express. I love that it is tucked away in a corner of DTD, has indoor and outdoor seating and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. I also love that you get a great meal for a QS credit—the best QS restaurant in Disney IMHO. In fact, I think I prefer WPE to many TS restaurants. On our 2010 trip, we tried WPE for breakfast for the first time and I have been waiting to return ever since. In between trips, I have drooled over pics from other food reports, waiting for my turn to go back. I was not disappointed. For breakfast we ordered one breakfast pizza (a total winner), Belgian waffles and an omellete. The added bonus here is that the coffee is not Nescafe or Joffreys. YAY! Now we only used 3 QS on this morning since my youngest DS is not a WPE lover. His passion is the pizza sandwich at Earls and they made this for him in an adult size (it is off the kid’s menu) at 10 am that morning. He ate it too fast for me to snap a shot.
