With Christmas coming I was thinking of getting my neice an Easy Bake Oven because it looks like something she would like. However, I thought I would ask the DIS folks who have experience with them what their take is on them. Would an almost 8 year old girl like this? Would she get use out of it?

I loved my easy bake oven when I was that age! I used it for many years and my brother and I loved baking cakes and brownies in it. I think it's a great gift! I can't wait to buy one for my neice :)

i swear i was tramatized when i younger because as much as i begged i never got an easy bake oven!! haah

I've got a newly five year old DD that just got one for her birthday. Other than the "Build-A-Bear" kitty cat she got from us, it is easily her second favorite present.

Does your niece like to "help her mom cook" ? DD loves doing this, so the EZBake was an EZChoice. :teeth:

I always wanted one but my mom said the toaster oven/real oven works just as well.

I say buy her one and let her have fun making the cakes and things you can make with a super hot lightbulb. ;)

Oh that is where I learned to cook! :goodvibes I loved mine, I made so many things in it! I also got my DD one and she loved her's just as much! I say get her one, she will be so happy! ;)

Ya know - I remember LOVING mine when I was a kid. I thought it was so cool to make a cake for my dad when he got home from work.

That said, my girls had them & they never were interested. We had two & I don't think even one of them was used more than once. My kids could use the microwave though - something we didn't have growing up. Maybe that made the "pretend" cooking less exciting.

I'd do some "fishing" & see if this is something your neice is interested in before I bought one.

You're a great aunt for thinking of your little neice though!

Me too and I just bought my neice one for her birthday. I planned it when she was born. My sisiter said she likes it but the refills are expensive. You can also use your own mixes to bake with.

Both of my DDs LOVED their easy bake ovens. They enjoyed them from about age 5 or 6 with LOTS of supervision right up into their early teens years (they would kill me if they knew I told ;) ).

I bet your neice would love it too. Make sure to get extra mixes.. they go fast and can be a pain to find sometimes.

My almost 7 yo DD loved her Easy Bake. She begs me to use it almost every weekend.

I don't have girls, so I don't have one. But, according to Consumer Reports, they say they work OK, but require adult supervision. Since they require supervision they recommend just using a real oven and baking real things.

If you wait and beg long enough you will! I finally got mine when I was 41!

Mom found a older model on e-bay....it is a 50's kinda style and turquoise! I did use it once...but I do have it!

I had one for my girls. After once or twice they just wanted to make the real thing. My oldest loves to bake and my younger one is her helper. I just stand back and make sure nothing lands on the floor!

I'm on my soapbox here...do the people who write the consumer reports articles even have kids? Maybe the reviews should be written by kids in some instances, instead of the adults. I'm going way off topic here, the last CR I read was about 10 years ago, and it was for carpet cleaners. CR was very not sold on having one in your house, it would be just as easy to rent one from the grocery or hardware store etc. Obviously that person never had to clean up after a sick kid in the middle of the night. I'm back off my soapbox now.

My DD loved her Easy Bake from age 5 until about 7. Just sort of lost interest in it. Now...her favorite thing to make is the Jell-o pudding pies in the Graham cracker crusts. YUM.

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: Just over a year ago, the entire family got a nasty flu bug. I mean NASTY. I was never so thankful to own a steam cleaner and a washer and dryer in my entire life!

To the OP: An Easy Bake Oven sounds like a great gift. I always wanted one myself. I agree that you should buy a couple mix refills.

I bought my niece( then 9) one for Christmas last year and she and her sister love playing with it. But now they have a new and improved one that makes food, not just cakes and cookies. I know one of the things it makes is mac and cheese. They said they'd love to have that one now.

I don't know what the deal is though :confused3
I loved mine as a kid -
but DD has gotten 2 as gifts over the years and neither of them actually worked!
Fluke - I dunno
but I just let her prepare and we put it in the regular oven (I mean geez if I have to supervise anyways I want enough that I can eat some too!)
BUT - the Ice Cream maker was a huge hit!

DD had 2, one of them was the regular one and the other one did stuff like "worms cakes" and other "gross" desserts. She only used it twice, but she loved it when she got it though.

When my DD12 was about that age I thought about getting her one, but decided to get her real kitchen equipment instead. She'll be able to take it with her when she goes out on her own. The first thing I got her was a cast iron Mickey head muffin pan from the Disney catalog.

My daughter had one and liked it when she was young.

I have to tell you a funny story about hers. I had a job not too far from home and when my DH was home I came home on my lunch hour. He had gone to get fast food and put it in the Easy Bake oven to keep it warm. He didn't realize that it had an automatic lock and we couldn't open it too get the food. No lunch for me that day. :sad2:
