My mom is in a rehab recovering from surgery, and I'd like to make up an Easter basket for her, and also for her roomie, who is diabetic. The roomie is in her 60's, I believe...never married, no kids, few visitors. Any suggestions on what to include?

What a sweetheart you are! There are sugar free Easter treats you can get for her. Anything that has splenda, nutrasweet, maltitol are all good. I saw a commercial yesterday that Russle Stover has SF easter eggs. Why don't you add a good book or video, some nail polish, file etc. to do nails, how about a cute little Easter pin of some kind. Sometimes, I like to theme baskets- makes thinking what to put in them a little easier.

I wish I could help....but I think some of it depends on the roommates diet restrictions. Does she only limit sugar intake or does she also limit her carb intake. Diabetes is different for many. Is the roomate on insulin? That makes a difference. Maybe stay away from any type of food/candy and give small gifts like notepads, pens, pictures frame, etc.

That is really nice of you. I would also suggest a non edible type gift basket. Maybe some nice sationery, magazines, word search book, things of that nature. It really is very thoughtful.

As a longtime diabetic I would suggest mostly nonedible items. Most of the sugar free items still have carbs and fat plus the side effects of eating too many of them at a time is most unpleasant. Even sugar free candy has to be greatly limited.
Notepads, crosswords, word searches, magazines and easy to read books. Maybe some fragrance and nice lotion.

I was just at Walgreens and was looking at the low carb "treats". 35% of the fat was saturated!

I will say that we are trying out Suzanne Sommers, "Sommersize" stuff as far as sugar-free. It is supposed to not spike your insulin levels. I just got it today. I am not diabetic however, I am trying to reduce my refined sugar intake.

Diabetic here too! I enjoy an occaisional splurge on sugar-free treats... ya they have less carbs... sometimes... but not always.

Since the woman is in the hospital you might not want to treat her with food stuff right now. If she is insulin dep. illness can cause havoc with Blood sugar levels. I agree with everyone else a little lotion or cards.. or even a game book might be appreciated.

Hope your mom recovers quickly! Big hugs for you for being so thoughtful as to look out for someone else.
