The NC School of Science and Math (a residential high school for juniors and seniors) in Durham, NC is trying to break the Guinness world record for most edible items collected at one location within 24 hours and Disney has agreed to help!

For every person that brings two paper grocery bags full of nonperishable food items to the school on March 20th, Disney has agreed to provide four free one-day amusement-park passes through the "Give a Day - Get a Day" program!!! All food collected will be donated to the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina.

Free Disney passes, helping out the community and being a part of a world record??! Does it get any better than this??!!?!?!

This is interesting, but there are a lot of questions I'd have that they are a little vague about. But my in-laws are in the area...

They say you don't actually have to pre-register, which as far as I know you have to do for every other offer.

It sounds like you get 4 vouchers as if 4 different people volunteered, but they don't say how or if names are tied to them...

Would this work if my in-laws got the 4, and got one for my youngest DD who won't turn 8 until October? Our trip isn't until December...

Food Drive donors eligible for FREE Disney passes

Donate 2 full grocery bags of canned goods on Saturday, March 20, and you will be eligible for four free tickets to DisneyWorld in Orlando, Fl., through the Disney “Give a Day, Get a Day” program. We know you have questions, so here are some answers:

What qualifies as a grocery bag of food?
In order to be eligible for the free Disney passes, you must bring at least two full grocery bags of canned goods. Worried about the bags breaking? Just double-bag!

Can everyone in my family bring two bags of groceries and each receive four free passes?
Unfortunately, no. There is a limit of one set of four tickets per household.

Can I use all four passes myself?
Again, unfortunately the answer is no. Each individual can only use one pass.

I already received Disney passes through another volunteer organization. Can I combine all of my passes and use them on the same trip?
No. Disney stipulates that each individual can only use one “Give a Day, Get a Day” pass per year.

When will my Disney passes expire?
You must use your Disney passes before December 15, 2010.

Are there blackout dates for the Disney passes?
Yes. You can find more information on Disney’s Web site.

What information will I need to provide along with my donation?
In order to receive your Disney passes, we will need your name, address, e-mail address, and the names of the individuals that will be using the tickets.

When will I receive my Disney passes?
The Disney passes will be sent to you by Disney directly. If you have any questions or concerns about the delivery of your passes, you should contact Disney.

According to Disney’s Web site, I need to register before the Food Drive in order to receive my Disney passes. Is that the case?
Technically no. You can still receive your Disney passes without pre-registering. However, registering online can expedite the process. We are currently in the process of getting more details about how you can register online, so stay tuned!

Yes, I've read that...you do provide names for the vouchers, but there are finer logistics that I have questions on before I send in the in-laws (who just so happened to have started looking in local opportunities today). I've emailed them some questions.

I'm assuming that this is exempt from the potential "1 million lockout" should Disney reach 1 million before their date, since this is a specific opportunity and they claim pre-registering isn't required. But that isn't certain.

I did just hear from them.

They are trying to get pre-registering working so things at least work smoother, but its not working yet. They are working through the food bank.

They said a child under 6 would be able to get a voucher under their program, but I'm still going to assume they must be 6 by the time to redeem.

The person donating will need to provide all the names for the vouchers.

This is interesting. It is kind of like buying the passes as you have to buy the bags of food. I'm not sure as I like this because it is not really giving of one's time and doesn't take much effort.

That is two passes per bag of food and not everyone has to participate. Mom can go shop for the two bags of whatever cans are cheapest at the store (I didn't see any special requirements, just canned goods) and drop them off then Mom, Dad, Junior and Jane all get free days. It doesn't really teach the kids much about volunteerism.

So much for "Give-a-Day". This is very frustrating for those of us who have put a good deal of time and effort into their projects.

Even as frustrated as I am by this, I truly hope that all goes well for the kids and the community of Durham. I hope that they break the record.

I wonder how this program would be affected by the news coming out that Disney is reaching 1 million volunteers shortly and is likely to stop issuing vouchers?

It may work independently from it in some fashion, but I'd had to have my in-laws participate, spend the money, and then find out "Sorry...Disney won't give us the tickets now..."

Maybe I'm just missing it but where is the info about donating online?
nevermind I found it! its under Virtual Food Drive.

Looks like a 'bag' donation is $50, so it would be $100 for 4 GAD tickets under this promotion if that is how the virtual donating will work. I think I'll stick with blankets my kids will actually get involved and it won't just be me putting in our credit card online and getting 'volunteer' credit.

Looks like this opportunity is a bust. I just got the following from the coordinator:

Unfortunately, I am writing to tell you that we learned just a few short hours ago that Disney has officially ended the Give A Day. Get A Day program and will not be issuing any vouchers because they have reached their 1 millionth volunteer mark. We're sorry that this has occured prior to the Food Drive, however it is out of our hands and we have no control over it. We hope that this will not discourage you from wanting to attend or donate virtually to the food drive and we look forward to seeing you on March 20th.

Yes, the site looks to still be active, but we are already registered so I don't know if it is taking new ones. Some have reported broken links.

Given that this group was planning to "register on the fly", they may be getting told this because Disney knows it will not make it until the 20th.
