I seem to recall something about emh not being good but can't get search towork so any ideas...this is for in early Jan so crowds should not be bad but can not remember if we have used it in the past or not ( "pre" senior moment)

We always take advantage of early entry. It's amazing how many attractions you can see even before the park opens. IMHO, it's worth getting up for!

We too always stay on property and take advantage of EE. You really can do a lot in those opening hours --- even after the normal opening time it takes a bit of time for lines to build. Still, it always seems a bit strange to be riding Space Mountain at 7:15 when we're barely awake and haven't had breakfast yet. We actually go to bed earlier on most Disney vacations than other vacations, since we are up and out early most mornings.

Disney Darwin;
In your experience, what time does MK start to get busy on EE (Th) mornings?

MrsMud,
I'll have to defer to someone else to give you a recent answer, because although I've been to WDW many times, I've not been for over two years. I think the official EE policy is 1 hr before scheduled opening time. But, we always made it a point to get there a bit earlier than that, because we would frequently be rewarded by getting in even earlier. I also recall several times where characters came out to greet and interact with those waiting. At still other times, there were no characters and we were allowed in precisely an hour ahead. I'm pretty sure official hours still vary seasonally. I'm going over Thanksgiving and I think the EE times are all 8am. I know I've gone in summers where the official opening was 8am and we were actually in the parks before 7am. When I'm not on vacation I don't even leave the house until 7am! That's the ones that get me wondering if I've lost my sanity! I don't know if they still open that early in the summers, someone else will have to comment on that. Still, it's pretty cool to ride Space Mountain or some other attraction 3 quick times in row with little to no wait.

This summer, we did get a lot done in Fantasyland in that time and it was worth while. At the Studios, we only got one ride each TOT and RNR and the lines were very long then. From now on, we are just going to do Extra Magic Hour at MK and sleep in for the rest!!!!!!!!

PAIN...!

FEEL RUSHED...I'm on VACATION!

Still crowds at the gates...then everyone rushes to the major attractions.

I've played that Park Commando game and it's for NEWBIES.

After a couple hours the park is packed...and it's always a hassle park hopping (lose time transfering while we could be enjoying attractions).

We like to hang out at DTD and/or BW at night and then sleep in until around 8:00 am, after a nice breakfast we head to a park that didn't have EE.

Besides WDW is a vacation for our family...so we treat it like one.

We did it for MK in January. The only section open was Fantasyland, so you could cover that before the crowds set in without big lines for Dumbo, Peter Pan, Pooh, etc. Of course, the park had shorter operating hours when we were there so we took advantage of every hour of open park available.

if you don't mind, could you tell me what time of year were you there when the parks were packed?

could you tell me if the park seemed more busy that day, later was there aproblem getting on anything?

I do not think that taking advantage of EMH makes me a park commando, and I'm certainly not a WDW newbie; but, I still like that extra park hour:). Granted, my family is a bunch of early birds, vacation or no vacation. One thing to consider is that park hours in January will not be expanded because, other than NYE, January is a slower time at WDW. My family likes to do the EMH, and then hop to another park after lunch. We have never found park hopping a hassle, and the bus or monorail gives our tired legs a chance to rest. If I was traveling during a busier time of the year, with extended park hours, I probably would skip EMH and start my day at a park that does not have EMH. But during those slower times, we like to maximize our park time.

blanq :

that's what we have done in the past, not really cause of crowds, just cause we like to ! but I don't think I ever "planned" on going for the ee before...maybe they have't had it when we've been there ( can't really say) but I was concerned it would be a lot busy later (which I have read on this board ) making my peaceful, empty park like a packed July day!

Jann, you are right that a park that has EMH can be busier overall. We have found, even during slower times, that by around lunch time things are seeming more crowded. We tend to vacation mid-Jan, early-May, or early-Dec, so I don't think that any time we have been there has it been like one of those packed July days! If things start to feel crowded, we book it to another park, and that works for us. If your strategy is to stay at one park the whole day, then maybe you want to skip the EMH featured park?! You are going at a great time (we'll be there in Jan too!), so hopefully we'll both not have to fight with too many crowds, EMH or not. I hope you have a great vacation!

The park did seem slightly busier when the regular crowd came in, but it evened out in the afternoon. I don't think there was a significant difference as we spent the afternoon/evening in the park the two days prior and I don't think the crowds were that much busier on the day we were there with EE than those two prior. We were also there in the slow season, which makes a huge difference.

I think it makes sense to take advantage of Magic Kingdom EE, and not to worry about the others in Jan. We did EE at Magic Kingdom in Dec. and did ALL of Fantasyland (besides Snow White), and SM and Thunder Mountain, before 9:15 in the morning with no wait at all!! And yes, the MK did seem more crowded by noon than usual, but not unbearable so.

We didn't do EE for any other park and we got to see everything we wanted to see. We are not late sleepers, but don't really enjoy getting up at 6:30 on vacation, so we just did it for MK. But if you are early risers anyway, why not do EE for everything - you really can get a lot done.

My family tend to be early risers as well. So, for us EE (or Extra Magic Hour, or Surprise Magic Hour or whatever they are calling it this week..... ) is usually a good option, especially for our December trips, when the park hours are shortened. But I'd agree, that it IS vacation after all, so I would go with whatever is comfortable for you and your family.
