E-cigs in restaurants

For those that are so against them, why are you so against them? There is nothing in them that is anymore toxic than what is in the food most of us eat. And if it is the smell, you can't go ANYWHERE without smells. The park has dog poop, main street USA has Burger King grease smell, the mall stinks, target smells like popcorn, I encounter people on a daily basis that either have too much perfume on or not enough (we own a roofing company and roofers stink).

So what is it?

I don't like the way it looks. Skeeves me out, especially around food. Probably because it looks so much like cigarette smoking.

I was at a middle school band concert when I saw some parent "light up" his e-cig and started puffing away. I couldn't believe none of the school officials said anything! IMO, its never appropriate to smoke ANYTHING on the school campus. E-cigs send the same message to impressionable kids that smoking is cool. "Want to look popular, kiddies, or at least dangerous and bad-@$$ :smokin: ? Pick up a cigarette/e-cig. The chicks will love you for it~" :headache:

As a bartender in a smoke free state I see them used quite a bit, technically they are 100% legal so we just ignore it. Honestly I've seen people with out realizing what it was ask someone to stop and the response from the person was horrible and so out of line. However, I have a co-worker who uses one and it IS nice that when she comes back from her smoke break she doesn't reek. As an exsmoker (at least a pack a day)the smell of smoke is one of the worst smells in the world, and as customer I'd rather have someone who smells faintly of the "vape" smell then smoke mixed with perfume which is what some of the girls do to try to cover it up.

I'd also like them restricted inside public places. With most brands I don't even notice when they are being used but it seems like some brands have gone out of their way to create a huge vapor cloud and a really bad smell.

I'm glad people have a healthier option, and as long as it's a normal e-cig I probably wouldn't even notice if you had a pull or two, but if it's one of the ones billowing out a cloud of nasty smelling smoke I don't want to smell it while I'm eating.

Good for that Applebees. Wonder if it's a chainwide policy or left to the discretion of each individual restaurant. IMO e-cigs don't belong anywhere tobacco products are banned.

Just based on the few instances I've observed: Some e-cig users seem to have a worse attitude and sense of entitlement than regular tobacco smokers. Glad your friend isn't one of them.

The waiter said it was chainwide policy.

I was on an American Airlines flight and the guy next to me had an e-cig. I was surprised they didn't say anything. He asked if I minded the smell, to be honest I didn't smell it so I said no.

One of my favorite dive bars in OC recently banned "vaping" inside the bar. Part of the reason cited was that THC can added & the owner didn't want to put his business at risk. I'm not sure how he could be held responsible, but I'm guessing that it would be a different outcome than if someone just happened to have an illegal substance on their person in the bar versus if someone were actively using it on the premises.

I usually err on the side of personal freedom, but smoke is one place I'm ok with it being restricted (to a certain degree). I don't buy into the second-hand smoke hype & I enjoy the occasional cigar, but I don't like smelling smoke when I'm in a confined area. I was on the fence about vaping since it seemed relatively noninvasive. As soon as I ran into people vaping patchouli & cloves, my mind was made up pretty quickly - take that noxious garbage outside!

I work for a government funded assistance program and we have people in here using them all the time. It drives me up the wall.

I don't care what people say about their safety. Surely someone can make it through an hour or less without puffing on one right?

I am going to start off with I am not a smoker, never was and never will be BUT....
E-cigs are 100% legal. I am not sure threatening her with a cop would have been my first response, especially since football games are held outdoors. Seems a little high and mighty to go that route. I am sure there was someone sneaking a real cigarette somewhere around that football field that very same day.

Although they are legal in general, they are banned from campus here. That includes sporting events. Had she been smoking, I'd have done the same thing. And what someone may or may not be doing somewhere else in the stadium doesn't change my response to someone doing it next to me, nor does it excuse the person doing it.

I work at a zoo and we are a non-smoking facility. Let me tell you, it is much easier to ask people to stop smoking regular cigarettes then the e-cigs. I often get more anger from the e-cig people, I do find more real smokers though.

Yes we are an outdoor facility but we have children every where. We had an incident where someone was smoking and trying to hide it by holding it low and someone's kid ran into it and got burned.

I really have no knowledge of e-cigs just know they can not be used on our grounds. Did find a lot of interesting info on here though.

My thing is where does it stop?! Everyone who's talking about how horrible this is and where these people need to smoke need to think: what if they tell you that you can't eat chicken Monday thru Wednesday because someone's religion says so..or that you can only watch tv from 5-7 in the evening because that's when the news is on and they want everyone to watch it..or that you can only take a vacation once every three years because production rates drop and peoples morale when they come back to work is low..what would you think?!!

You'd be ticked off!! Why?? Because it's a violation of your rights to do things when you want to do things. Everything is bad for you these days..but to sit there and tell someone to go to another section to "smoke" because it bothers you..I'm sorry but that's rude. Why can't you move and go somewhere else? A lot of these people are former smokers/smoker trying to quit and "forcing" them into the same areas as smokers is defeating the purpose!! It's like telling an alcoholic go get a job at a bar!! That's insane!! It's the temptation behind it and could lead them back to where they were.

I use an e-cig every once in awhile and I take it into restaurants and bars and public places. Unless they produce a sign that says no e-cig smoking or can provide a policy that states it's illegal for me to do it..then I'm goin to take a puff or two every once in awhile if need be.

Watch out because pretty soon..someone is going to sick of BBQ smoke and wanna ban people from bbqing in their backyards..in case the wuss blows the smoke their way..you all may say that's ridiculous..but so is this..IMHO...

I wouldn't have an issue moving away from dog poop or someone wearing perfume if it also negatively impacted my experience. But I don't think I should have to move if someone is using an e-cig in a restaurant, theater, subway car, etc.

I have an issue with the smell, and also the vapor is annoying. Yes it dissipates faster than spoke, but it don't want your vapor crossing in front of my face either. In a stadium or the person at the next table in a restaurant is still going to send vapor and smells to someone else's seat or table.

Based on this thread, my 17 year old decided to school me on e-cigs vs vapes, hash oil, and dabs. Very enlightening and vocabulary expanding.

I am a nurse and an occasional cigarette smoker. My 18 year old thinks it these vapes are so much safer then cigarettes. My point is 30 year ago no one knew all the risks of smoking; so, who's to say in a few years we all find out their are toxic chemicals in these vapes?! I refuse to let her do them in my home, around my other kids, and in her car!

Even though I have a cigarette occasionally I never do it, in my house, in my car or around my kids ; only outside by myself! It's common sense and respect and vapes should be treated the same way!

h.

Those are my observations as well.

Exhibit A below of a not atypical e-cig user attitude.

Because I have a basic right as a human being to breath in air that isn't filled with the chemicals that cigs or Ecigs may or may not give off.

If you can't not puff on something throughout the course of dinner then you have a problem. There is nothing wrong with excusing yourself and having a puff if need be.

My DH uses smokeless tobacco (maybe more disgusting than cigs) and he doesn't use it at the dinner table or while we are out in public. His tobacco isn't letting off nasty fumes and smoke either, yet he is courteous enough to refrain from using it when we are out.

BUT they are filled with ingredients that everyone EATS on a daily basis. It's more dangerous to breath in your grill fumes than it is to breath in the ingredients of an e-cig. Should we ban grills now too? What chemicals are in perfume/cologne, let's ban those too while were at it? How about exhaust from the cars everyone drives on a daily basis, that is way worse for you than the vapor that contains ingredients in our food we eat. I guess we should ban all gas powered vehicles too.

I don't smoke anything, so I am not defending myself. I just find the ignorance silly when it comes to these things and it is absolutely unnecessary.

It's the smell for me. I had to take a class with assigned seats. The man next to me puffed on his e-cig off/on for the entire 8 hour class. He changed flavors mid-day from something apple-y to cherry, but it made me so sick! I felt like I had an incense stick burning right in front of me for 8 hours. I could not get the "taste" out of my mouth until the next morning. If I had been eating, it would have been worse. Too much perfume is just as bad, but that aroma very rarely travels as far from one's person as smoke does, any smoke.
