Dyson Vacuum

My In-Laws hosted a wedding reception at their house this summer. It was raining so everyone came inside. Their house has pale yellow carpet. It was a mess the next day. I took over my Dyson to vacuum the living room. Everyone stood around and watched me vacuum. They couldn't believe that the carpets were actually looking good after a huge party like that.
I think I sold them all on the Dyson.

Some things I DON'T LIKE:
- Its a bit on the heavy side.
- Sometimes makes this horrible noise like something is stuck in the brushes. When I check, it's all clear. I still don't know why it screames at me sometimes.
-The front is a bit too high and I can't properly get under couches and such.

These are things I can live with because it's a great vacuum.

I have the DC 14 and find the attachments very easy to use.
My SIL bought an older Dyson and the attachments are a PIA to use.
There are several models to choose from. Just don't run and buy the first yellow vacuum you see thats on sale. They're not all the same.

I bought the Dyson D14 drive from Target. I don't find the vacuum heavy at all. In fact, it is much lighter and easier to push than my Hoover Windtunnel.

As far as performance. Let me just say....AMAZING. This thing picks up everything. My carpets looked like new after the first vacuum.

I originally didn't believe all the hype....I mean who pays $400+ for a vacuum??? However, I'm a believer and think it is definitely worth it!

Does it "scream" with the collection container thing needs to be emptied? I don't own a Dyson, but, my piece of cr*p vacuum makes a high pitched "scream" when the dust cup needs to be emptied. :thumbsup2

I bought a refurbished from Amazon last year, and it's great! It's the purple Animal. Amazing what you find in the canister. For the first week or so, DH used it every single day, then said "look at all this dirt!" :teeth:

I know the noise you're talking about. It's a rattling, chattering type of sound, but high volume. Even though the brushes seem clean, I clean them anyway, and the sound goes away. I think it's just a sensitive vacuum, but since it does such a great job, I can live with that.

Yeah..I hate that noise. I guess the Dyson is just a bit hyper sensitive about having clean brushes!
I have read on another thread that the noise comes when vacummed against the grain or a certain way. I haven't found that to be true. I can vacuum any which way and it is fine. I think it has something to do with the brushes and just being sensitive about the hair that gets wrapped around them.

Yeah...I can live with that too! No way would I trade it in!

I agree w/the complaints - mine smells like our dogs - I want that smell gone, not bringing it back every time I clean. Also, the screaming noise is awful. It usually happens on our Berber for no apparent reason. However, it picks up well enough that I'm willing to overlook its fussiness.

I will agree about the noise also. If it sucks up a light carpet, it makes a horrible noise. A noise that could wake the dead. It's really bad. Supposedly this is normal. Mine hasn't done it in a while. I will say their 800# is great. They answer on the first few rings - a real human answers! :)

The last time I needed a vacuum, I checked with Consumer Reports. They rated the Sears Kenmore one of the best. My last three vacuums were Sears canisters, and I was extremely disappointed. The vacuums did not hold up to average wear and tear (wheels broke off, hose connection broke, etc.) I refuse to buy Sears again.

This time, I thought I'd try Dyson.
Don't believe most things about Consumer Reports.
Most of the stuff is way outdated.

And they tend to rate things better when the product is given to them rather than them having to purchase it.

I have a old Rainbow vacume, the type of vacume you use with water. We got it over 10 years ago now.... for $1200+...! It has been wonderfull- for the first 8 years. We had to have the cord replaced, the motor "reworked" somehow, new seals... for about $120... '
I was looking at the Dyson. I kinda wish I had bought one then as the suckion is going AGAIN in the Rainbow. I can trade it in and get a new one for about $800-$900... but that is a trip to Disney!!!! It is a great vacume...

I guess my question is- anyone have a Rainbow befor they got there Dyson? If so which do/did you like best? The Rainbow also picks up wet spills... and cleans the carpet/upholstery... It is hard to compair the two! Thanks for any help!

The funny thing was, was that I bought the Dyson on a Fri night, got home about 10 and vacuumed til about midnight. I was so grossed out by everything it kept picking up. Well, by Sunday night, my DH was like "will you please go vacuum next door....you're driving me crazy!" Also the Dyson carpet crumbles for the machine work really well in making your house smell nice. Good luck and have fun with it!

too funny! This would be me....and I ordinaruly hate to vacuum, but I've been thinnking about a Dyson...

Could Not Get One At Target, Bought One Online. Can't Wait, I Used To Have Rainbow, Was Difficult To Get It Repaired By "official" Repairman, Had Difficulty Getting Items Covered By Lifetime Warranty, Discovered Any Vacuum With A Hose Will Suck A Pillow Flat In A Plastic Bag...if You Spill The Water In The Vaccuum On Your Ivory Carpet You Darn Near Ruin The Carpet.........

I have had my purple/red Dyson for about 3 years now and it still works like it was brand new. I continually get grossed out by what it picks up when I use it. When I first got it, I did the living room rug with my Electrolux, then I used the Dyson. I was shocked. I didn't want anyone to see what actually came out of the rug. I take better care of this vacume then any other I have ever owned. No regrets here. :cheer2:

my sister in law just was telling me she returned her dyson 14 because it wouldn't fit under anything and was kind of noisy......anyone else with this problem?

We bought ours at Sam's a year and a half ago. We have a short hair dog that sheds every time she lays down on the carpet. DH just gets out the dyson and sucks it all up. DH loves the dyson so much he vacuums a couple of times a week. If I knew that's all it would take, I would've bought it a long time ago. He says he likes to sees all the dirt that comes out of the carpet when he empties the cannister.

I'm really glad I found this thread. I just (finally) convinced my dh to buy a Dyson after looking at them a while and wanting one for 5 years now.

We ordered the yellow DC14 model online at target about 2 weeks ago because we had found an online coupon code for 10% off there. Well, like 2 days later, Target started running there $100 gift card promo! We decided to return the one we bought and re-buy so we could get the gift card. Well our model was the only one not offered in the promo!! So we have decided to return that one and order the DC14 drive model. It's a little more $ than the yellow DC14 but still less than the Dc14 purple animal one. (We figured we can buythe attachments later on.)

Anyway, my dh has been nagging me about the fact that the Dysons didn't do so great in CR, he keeps saying we could have bought a better vacuum for less $. Now I just have to wait until the new one ships to us (on like Oct. 14 or 18!)- must be ALL those other DISer's that are ordering theirs too! :goodvibes
