DVC Trading Power

Does anyone know how powerful DVC's Trading Power is in II?

What I mean is how does DVC compare to trading into or against these:
Marriott ski week in Utah or Colorado
Marriott Maui
Wordgate 3 Bedroom

Are there any resorts DVC has a hard time trading into.

I have never used II, but last year I tried to get a Utah ski week and was on the waitlist for many months and I gaveup.

Marriott inventory in II is held for a certain time period before it's released to non Marriott owners. I've heard any where from 24 to as few as 3 days (some part of the flex change period - which means 59 days or less to check in). In other words, Marriott owners have an internal priority over a non Marriott for trades.

I've heard Starwood resorts like Harborside at Atlantis and Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas on Maui are also hard to get in a trade through II. Starwood has an internal exchange network so I would think getting a trade through II would be tough since their owners get first crack at the good stuff. I've also heard that if you deposit in II with Starwood, that Starwood picks the week to deposit. So I doubt high season weeks ever make it into II.

But still, if you're flexible and aren't trying to go during a holiday or high season, anything's possible.

No one knows for sure. Ignoring the internal Marriott trading preference, I'd say Both of the Marriott's would trade better than DVC assuming you reserved a top week. As for the last one, I'm not sure which you're asking. It sounds like a cross between Worldmark and Westgate. But either way, DVC would likely trade better for almost all options conceivable. Just remember the exact week given to II will make all the difference for the above.

Remember that II doesn't know what they're getting from DVC either in terms of which resort or which week. So they have to give DVC an average trade power. Plus DVC tends to not give them the best resorts or weeks.

And if one is looking to trade, most of these options would be lockoff's so you could get two trades out of one week. And given you can trade with II directly, there are many other benefits over the DVC system such as being able to trade for a larger unit that you give up.

I have been a DVC owner for 6 years and have only used it for DVC properties. I am wanting to explore the II world, but want to only stay at "5 star" properties.

I would think studios/efficiencies would be the easiest trade to get at the Maui Marriott. I own a Marriott week and I can see some studios right now sitting out in II in flexchange (59 days or less check in window). And I'm pretty sure they've been there for a few days now (if it's the same ones). The bigger units go quick. But it seems the studios linger longer. I'm talking about what I see in flexchange, though, so I don't know how availability would work on a regular trade request.

You never know what you can pull with DVC until you try. Be flexible and open on your travel dates and I bet if you're patient, you'll get some of the trades you want to make.

For me, even using the 5* rating as a qualifying factor isn't enough. There is a large variation between 5*. That's why I like TUG and TST because they have reviews and/or ratings so you can get a lot more info. I also don't like giving up $3K worth of DVC points for something I could easily get with a timeshare that cost $500 and had fees half that of DVC. Just plan ahead and investigate so you know what you're getting.

It seems that most people do NOT want to trade their DVC points ;)

Yes, most people buy them to use them. I agree. :)

If I had a trip to Maui coming up, I'd love to stay at that Westin resort, though. Even the studios there have a jacuzzi tub and a separate shower, plus a large sitting area (I think they are around 450 square feet). They are actually way nicer than DVC studios in my opinion.

So many decisions when it comes to purchasing! I'm thinking of buying a smaller contract w/ Disney (150 pts) and buying another timeshare for trading. Can anyone recommend a timeshare that has good trade value and doesn't come with a huge price tag?

This is a very complicated question. In a nutshell, I recommend spending 6 months or more getting educated on sites like the Timeshare Users Group. Then look to buy something that you can afford and will use but may trade part of the time. Try not to buy something too high range or expensive or you'll be in the same boat as DVC all over again.

Dean,
We have toured the Marriott resorts at Lake Tahoe but did not want such a large investment since we already have DVC. If we are to buy a resale there, would we get the full point benefit that they advertise with new purchases?
Thanks

No, the ONLY benefit you lose on resale IS the points option. But that's not bad as it's not that great a benefit for most people anyway in spite of how they make it sound.
