Hi. We have only traded out with our DVC a few times and have an upcoming RCI resort reservation in New Orleans this Fall. We may not be able to go due to happy but unforeseen circumstances in our family.

Does anyone know if we can rent out this reservation as one would with their DVC resort reservation? And if so, what is the best way to do so?

TIA,
Dee

Happy to hear of your family news!

Unfortunately, you cannot rent out an RCI exchange.

Just to clarify.

You can rent out the RCI ressi, but per RCI policy you are not allowed to.

A lot of people rent out their RCI ressi' and RCI either dont care or dont know. If you are "caught" RCI might cancel the vacation.

Ask yourself this question: IF you rented out your ressi, would it pay just as much as if you cancelled your ressi and you got your DVC points back and rented those out?

I am unfamiliar with RCI cancellation rules, but I do know that If the OP cancels the RCI exchange, he would not get back his DVC points.

I just found the following online:

RCI Exchanges
  • Exchanging with RCI is final. Points associated with a cancelled RCI accommodation can only be used for RCI exchange accommodations.

https://disneyvacationclub.disney.go.com/destinations/list/world-rci/rci/

So you are partially right, OP wont get his DVC points back into his DVC account, but we wont loose them either. They will remain with RCI and then the OP can use them at a later time.

the 95$ exhange fee will be lost however.

You can gift an RCI reservation, meaning no payment for it.

RCI will allow the direct fees (exchange fee & guest cert fee) to be recouped semi officially. One can cancel and have the credit with RCI for a future exchange which will expire likely this Dec or next (must actually travel by the expiration date). This is one of the risks of exchanging and one of the reasons giving up a high end option for an exchange is often not a good choice.

You would also have to check to see if you get ALL of the points back in RCI.

Not sure how it works with DVC, but with some systems you would get 100% back only for a short time after you accept the exchange, then 50%, then less...eventually zero. Those cancellation policies are really critical to understand before you book.

Here's the last info I had, I don't think it's changed. Since it said fall, I assumed it was at least 45 days away.
  1. Once an exchange request is submitted, it may be canceled only if notice of cancellation is received by DVC Member Services prior to Confirmation of the request. Once DVC Member Services issues a Confirmation it may only be cancelled by telephone through DVC Member Services. If a reservation is cancelled:
    1. 45 or more days before the check-in date, the full number of Vacation Points used for the reservation is returned into the Member’s RCI account. The DVC Member may request additional RCI exchanges, but the check-in date must occur by December 31st of the next year and an additional non-refundable $95 transaction fee must be paid.

    2. Less than 45 days but more than 6 days before the check-in date, the full number of Vacation Points used for the reservation are returned into the Member’s RCI account, but may only be used for RCI exchanges occurring within 44 days to 24 hours prior to the new check-in date. The check-in date must occur by December 31st of the next year and an additional non-refundable $95 transaction fee must be paid.

    3. 6 or less days before the check-in date, the exchange is forfeited and no Vacation Points are returned.

If someone can go in your place, you can purchase a "Gift" certificate for approx. $60, transfer the reservation to the other person's name, and DONE. (drops mic)
