If we rent a DVC - we would pay for the points renting from someone.

Is there also a required tax also needed to be paid ?

Let's say we do BWV studio at about $250 a night - so we still need to pay taxes?

Is it just the $250 a night for the points?

Thank you for helping us calculate the cost of renting a DVC though a family or David's rentals.

I have rented points many times and there is no extra cost other then the per point you agree on paying. And yes no taxes.

Thanks so much - it will be easier for us to calculate our budget !
I love the DVC board - even though we can not afford to buy a DVC - it would great to rent one.

good luck in your quest.. We have been owners for 17 years .. The best thing we ever did. Even though the kids have left the nest we still go down sometimes 2x a year and rent points out when we do not..

:thumbsup2

FYI...David's is a Canadian company, so if you are in the US, make sure you use a credit card that doesn't charge fees.
Also, a DVC rental doesn't come with daily maid service, if you want that, it is extra.
Other than that, whatever price you pay David's is it. You get DME, parking, WiFi, use of resort amenities, etc.

You will need to travel trip insurance (or at least I would with a DVC rental).

Ye we live in the USA - we have a VISA card from Chase bank. I guess I will have to ask.
I feel it is safer and more trustworthy to go through a broker (middle-man) to rent a DVC than rent directly with a DVC owner.
Not that all DVC owners are bad - we just personally do not know them.

LOL no we are not all bad and if you go read the FQA at the top of the forum you will see that there are been very few issues. All you need to do is get references check there posts get a agreement. I have made some great repeat customers and some have become forum friends with many.

Whatever you decide best of luck to you

I just returned from a stay using rented points through the timeshare store. Have to say it was super easy. One pg contract to sign and that was it. I was expecting sales tax, resort fee, something. But nope, just the per point price x the number of points required. It was great. I've already booked my next trip in December!
Hope this helps

Not to confuse matters, but I want to clarify that there is one small exception to the "no tax or any additional payments" comments that have been made...

If you use points (rented or otherwise) to stay at Aulani, th party staying at the resort must pay the Transient Accomodations Tax at some point between check-in and check-out. It is not a large sum, but this is a tax that must be paid directly to Aulani by the people who are actually staying there. DVC is not able to wrap the tax into the member dues.

Again, this applies to guests staying at Aulani only, and not to guests staying in WDW or any of the other DVC resorts.

If we rent for a DVC DIS'ner I will have to learn more about points - such as how many are needed for 10 nights at BWV or BCV for a studio in mid-May.

We do not plan to go back to WDW till 2017 or 2018, unless we land better jobs and our DD get better grants for college.

So I will learn from the DIS rent board and will see what happens.
Thanks so much. :cool1:

When we stayed at Aulani the Transient Accommodations Tax was added to the nightly portfolio and it was charge to our credit card at check out. I expect the same would be done for renters.

Note: IANATA (I am not a tax attorney, and this is not tax advice, etc.)

Technically, I believe the DVC member renting out the points is supposed to collect sales (and possibly resort) tax on the price paid by the renter. Disney won't collect tax (aside from Aulani, as previously mentioned) because they aren't the one receiving any money for the rental, but the member theoretically is.

The member also should be reporting the rental income on their income tax returns.

Whether the member asks to collect the taxes, or reports it and pays it to FL, is of course a whole other story (and likely is rarely done).

This was discussed in a bit more detail in this thread (starting around post 9):
