DVC Owners: What made you decide to buy?

My stance has changed on this for reasons those in the know on the board understand. I don't want to risk my posting privledges or start another SSR bash so I'll go with this. You guys ever watch Friends? I thought so: The episode where Chandler makes a bet that he can go a certain amount of time without saying something funny and/or sarcastic. That's me....... anywhooooo. Renting might be the best choice. DVC owners for reasons I'll never understand continue to rent points in the ten dollar range. Let me give you an example here. Lets say you want 6 days every year staying at the BCV during choice season, it would take 167 points. At ten dollars a point you've got $1670.00 . Now to buy in for that point amount you are looking around $90/pp give or take. Take the 90 bucks times the 167 and you have $15030.00. At this rate your break even point is around year 9. This doesn't even count the annual dues so if we add in dues of around $700+ dollars a year your break even point is around year 13+. As long as members are willing to be taken advantage of on the rental market, just rent. Let the members use there home booking priority to get you into whatever resort you want. Want BCV, no problem, BWV, no problem, VWL, no problem.

The numbers can be spun a million ways here. Bottom line is this: Timeshares are not a god deal, period. Why do I own, well I have money to burn so if you don't I'd think it through long and hard. DVC was a luxury purchase for me, it wasn't a money thing. I spend far more now than I did before even with the "free room". Tickets, food, airfare, rental car, booze, etc. Good luck with this.

When Southwest moved into Philly, with there lower flight costs could go more often, rented points a couple of times loved the rooms etc. Though about how much I was paying to rent. Decided I would be better off buying in, so I did and like a lot of us, wish I have done it sooner.

We'd stayed in deluxes for over 20 year. Long story short, our DS is now married (read: future grandkids) and my sis and her dh have 2 little girls. We knew it was Time For DVC. We knew we were gonna need a LOT more room. And we didn't want to give up the Magic. The family trips we've taken so far have proven what a GREAT decision we made. pixiedust:

DH and I woke up one day and realized our All Star days were over! We were no longer willing to deal with a Value resort--even a Mod would have been "roughing it".

All of the sudden DVC made a lot more sense for us financially, based on what we wanted.

My husband is a workaholic and would fight me every year, NOT to take a vacation. I knew a timeshare would force us to take the vacation and end the fighting. If my husband HAD to vacation, it would be to Disney. Timeshare + Disney = DVC. My husband is also "financially conservative" (read CHEAP) and he loves being able to eat meals in the room. My kids eat chicken nuggets and mac and cheese--my husband refuses to spend $7.00 on mac and cheese at a restaurant. After spending the day in the parks, my kids have a difficult time sitting patiently (and staying awake) in a restaurant. We love the kitchen idea! Some people would say that cooking isn't something they want to do on vacation-chicken nuggets are effortless.
I also love the idea of taking three outfits per family member and washing them while there--it cuts down on luggage--and washing everything before we leave. Coming home to a suitcase full of clean clothes is my idea of heaven. :woohoo: I know--I need to get out more often!!!!!!
