DVC owner trading RCI restrictions

I already own DVC. I'm consider buying an RCI (in Orlando, near WDW)contract for visiting Orlando, outside of WDW.

I'm finding out that there are some restrictions in Florida. Can someone give me the basics on those restrictions?

In particular, I'm wondering if I could ever (with current rules) trade the RCI points into DVC even though I'm a DVC owner, if something was available.

And could I also trade into other RCI resorts, near Disney, like HGVC SeaWorld.

Thanks!

Depending on what you buy, there are often local geographic restrictions in high-demand destinations like Disney World. I think the normal range is 30 miles, and I believe it would apply to ALL resorts within that zone, not just DVC.

The first question I have is why would you buy in the WDW area? It's a very overbuilt area, likely to be low trading value, AND you're going to have a trading restriction in an area you visit often. You might want to look at a resort in the same system you're considering, but in a different destination. You will probably be able to use that system to get their resorts in the WDW area, and you'd be able to get into DVC.

If you want to trade into DVC from another system, you will have to either be in a fixed grid system or have enough TPU to get in. I own a fixed-grid system (Wyndham) so I"m not familiar with the TPU required, but there are several others here who are very knowledgeable in that area.

Whatever you decide to buy, I assume you know you can buy many fine timeshare contracts in the resale market for very little money. You can get good contracts on eBay for $1, sometimes with free closing.

if you buy into an RCI resort near orlando (with the exception of a few like HGVCs and wyndhams like the bonnet creek resort, which are treated as part of their respective systems and not individual resorts by RCI for this purpose), you are restricted from trading into DVC.

you can trade into DVC by using another RCI resort even if you are a DVC owner...the big restrictions are 1) the 30-mile distance from orlando for most resorts and 2) whether the resort gives you enough trading power (enough points) to have the power to trade into DVC.

a recent thread is here:

One other thing.

I saw a post a few days ago from someone who had an RCI account and they deliberately did NOT list DVC as one of their holdings with RCI. I think they were concerned that they could be precluded from exchanging back into RCI even though the timeshare they were exchanging with was another company.

(I don't think you can deposit DVC points into RCI and then use them to exchange back into DVC. Not sure why anyone would want to do that (:confused3), but apparently it's prohibited.)

In this thread Charles mentioned, I'm still not 100% clear on what happened with the cancellations Dean mentioned.

As you probably know, RCI actually has two systems -- Weeks and Points. Some timeshares trade in Weeks, some in Points, some in both.

I think Dean was talking about cancellations of exchanges made via the RCI Points system where the underlying home resort was in the Orlando area...but I'm not 100% positive that's what Dean meant.

Personally, if I was looking to exchange into the WDW area, I'd play it safe and own somewhere else.

I was looking at Orlando because I was going by DVC adage "own where you want to stay", and I'm learning that the opposite seems to be true for RCI exchanges.

So, I should look for something that is practically free, with low MF per point, right? I'm used to points, and I'd rather stick to points. We tend not to be Saturday to Saturday travelers - sometimes more days, sometimes less days.

Maybe you can offer me some resorts that come to your mind? Preferably on the East Coast of the US.

Also, I don't totally understand "trading power". Can you point me towards a good explanation. I don't know how to evaluate a resort for trading power. If it's points, is the trading power question moot?

Thank so much!

A better resource for learning about non-DVC timeshares and other exchange systems would be www.tug2.net - The Timeshare Users Group. They offer a wealth of information about resorts and exchange systems.

Our DVC Forums here on the DIS are pretty DVC specific. Please take a look at TUG.
