Here's the conversation I was having with a CM about the Dining Plan just now.
I was told at one time we did get a discount. Sad :sad1:

CM: You are now chatting with XXXXX

ME: Do DVC Members get a discount on the Dining Plan??

CM: Thank you XXXXX. Disney Vacation Club Members don't receive any discounts on the purchase of the Disney Dining Plans. However, certain restaurants do offer dining discounts. I can direct you through the Member Website where to find that information.

ME: I thought that we(DVC) pay only $58.66(Per Adult) for the Dining plan versus the Regular price of $60.64(Per Adult). When did we(DVC) lose this discount.

CM: There's never been any Member discounts on the purchase of any of the three Disney Dining Plans.

ME: Thank you.

CM: You're welcome XXXXX. Is there anything else I can help you with today?.

ME: No.

Correct. DVC members have never had any discounts to the DDP rates.

In the past DVC members have been exempt from seasonal price increases, but right now it does not appear there is any seasonal pricing in place for the remainder of 2014. DDP prices were increased mid-year and the $60.64 (adult) rate is in place for all dates through the end of the year.

I went on to dvcrequest.com(David's Vacation Club rental) went to the Disney Dining Plan Calculator and it show the rates and then went on their chat and asked what the DVC member rate is? they said what I see is the DVC member discount rate. So I thought this was the discounted rate even on our(DVC) web site. I guess you only get a discount if you rent from them.

David probably didn't update his website with the new rates since he has no special access to DVC and no way of negotiating special rates.

I, for one, would love a discount on the DDP. We currently can't even break even on the DDP at the current completely ridiculous price for adults. Instead we choose a couple of onsite favorites per 10-dat trip and we cook or eat at off-site restaurants the rest of the time. Disney is losing a bundle on our family's choices. Give me a nice 20-25% discount like we have on APs and I would think about getting the DDP again.

We are also having a hard time justifying the prices on the dining plan. I know that Disney thinks DVC member will always have to keep coming back , but Really enough is enough. Now we are only looking to spilt a meal(sometimes portions are too big) and cost too much. And we don't eat enough for the TIW card to save us anything.

I think Disney increased the price of the dining plan earlier this year but DVC members didn't get the increase, probably because it was contracted for the whole year. So that's why it's a couple dollars cheaper. It's really not a "discount".

The dining plan is in place to fill cash rooms during periods when the room are empty.

Offering a discount to DVC doesn't help the reason for the plan. DVC dining discounts currently in place are provided by restaurants not owned by Disney if I'm not mistaken, and they are offered during the restaurant's slow time to fill tables.

It's all about the numbers and the money. Why offer a discount to a group like DVC if there isn't any benefit to Disney? Without discounted dining will you stay home, not go to Disney and just pay your dues?

Three points:

1) DVC is not affected by mid-year price increases, so the dining plan is slightly cheaper for DVC members right now. David's prices are accurate and match what is available when you select to add the dining plan to an existing reservation using the online system. It's not that we get a "discount," but that we have negotiated a rate for the entire year up front.

2) DVC members get a 10% discount at many restaurants at Disney World

3) DVC members are eligible to purchase a Tables In Wonderland card which gives a 20% discount at even more restaurants on property.

Unless you have kids (ages 3-9) and do a lot of character meals and buffets, the dining plan is never worth the money. With the DVC and TiW discounts available, we, as members, get much better deals than the average Disney tourist.

The paid dining plan is not designed to fill cash rooms. It's designed, in conjunction with DME, to keep guests trapped in the "Disney bubble" where The Mouse has sole access to your wallet. Every resort guest who drives offsite to eat means one less guest who is eating at a Disney restaurant.

If I'm not mistaken cash guests are required to purchase tickets in order to get DDP, as in a package. It used to be at least a 1 day ticket and now I believe it's a 2 day minimum.

DVC members are not required to purchase tickets.....seems like a pretty decent discount to me. ;)

I don't agree. If that were the case, they would offer free dining all year round and booking a room at full rack rate wouldn't be a requirement.

The DDP is very successful at filling rooms and increasing attendance during projected slow periods.

Apple and oranges. Free dining is a different animal and is designed to fill cash rooms at slow periods. The DDP has no effect on filling rooms when you have to pay $60 for every guest 10 and over.

DebbieB From MS this morning , there is no difference between the price on dining for DVC members or non-members and that the price is the same no matter when you go to WDW. So how is the price less??. Just wondering :confused3

It looked like you were the one quoting prices and that MS never did. They were correct there isn't a discount per se - just that the contracted price did not change mid-year. If you had actually asked MS what the price would be to add the DP for sometime this year you should have been told the lower price.

The dining plan is in place to fill cash rooms during periods when the room are empty.

That may be true of the "free dining" promos but it has nothing to do with the a $60 pre-paid dining plan. The mere existence of a dining plan doesn't fill cash rooms.

DVC dining discounts currently in place are provided by restaurants not owned by Disney if I'm not mistaken...

Not true. I don't keep tabs on the ownership of every WDW restaurant but there are many on the list which are clearly Disney owned including Olivia's, Turf Club, Artist Point, Trail's End, Sanaa, Boma, Hollywood & Vine, etc.

...and they are offered during the restaurant's slow time to fill tables.

Again, it varies. Obviously there are no discounts offered at Chef Mickey's or Be Our Guest due to high guest demand. But many locations offer discounts throughout the day including signature restaurants like Citrico's and Artist Point. Not sure I would agree that every discounted location is desperate to fill tables.

At Disneyland, pretty much every restaurant is discounted 10%. That includes both high demand locations like Goofy's Kitchen and Trader Sam's, as well as signature locations like Steakhouse 55 and Carthay Circle Restaurant.

So apparently someone sees a value in offering across-the-board discounts there.

Have you logged into your account to see how much they'll charge you for the dining plan? It's pretty easy to find.
