DVC Member Admission Discount--Which Best Describes You?

DVC Member Discount for Admission Tickets--Which One Best Describes You?

  • Already have our deal--no need for additional discounts

  • Wish we had this discount--would feel appreciated as a DVC member

  • Entitled to this discount--we spent big money on DVC & they owe us

  • Give it to someone more deserving--I'd feel too greedy and shameful

This poll is limited to your opinion of a DVC member discount on admission tickets (AP & Hoppers). Please choose the one you most agree with...be honest though, so we get your true feelings.

NOTE: If you vote for #2, you are "wishing" for an admission discount and not looking for appreciation. Appreciation may be a feeling you have AFTER you receive an admission discount, but it isn't your main motiviation.

Then, we can have some fun discussing...no fighting.

Tough choice between first and second. We really do feel that we are getting what we paid for. But an AP discount would be very appreciated.

I agree with Jim. I feel like we got what we paid for, but I wouldn't say no to an AP discount. :D

Edited to add - I already feel appreciated as a DVC member. They have given us perks and plan some great events.

The added discount would just make me happy that I could spend less money for our AP's.

And you're telling us to be serious? :confused3

hahah you're so silly ::yes::

If you think back to the original 2 free APs when DVC began, and couple that with the current 2 free AP promotion, I think it is hard to look at DVC and not expect a discount of PH or AP to be a natural expectation.

The Florida resident discount is because Disney recognizes the vast opportunity to entice those people to visit with a discount. DVC members are certainly a captive group, who in all likelyhood will spend more per 2, 5, 10 day visit than Florida residents who simply drive home. Also, DVC members, along with all other non-Florida guests have tremendously more expense just getting to WDW than Florida residents. Almost seems the incentive is inside out to me.

Yes, I'm having fun with this kathleena. I'm changing the word "serious" to "honest". I really do want honest opinions, as I'm thinking most of us discount fans do not feel "entitled". If some do though, that's their opinion.
Bottom line, I think the majority of us would like to see an admission discount!

I chose
Wish we had this discount--would feel appreciated as a DVC member

I honestly do not feel that I am entitled to anything other than what I signed a contract for. In my opinion, the word "entitled" has been thrown around a little too much when we discuss this issue. People like to say that others have the "entitlement mentality". I'm not sure why  . If I ever gave that impression, it was not my intention. I have always believed that better DVC discounts would help someone like me to want to spend money in the parks. Remembering the days of Magic Kingdom Club, AP renewal policy that was fair and things like that that have been taken away. Well, just leaves a bad taste for Disney.

Anywhoo, because you added --would feel appreciated as a DVC member, then it was a no-brainer for me.

I too would like to have a DVC discount on AP's and it should be a substantial one. It would have to be better than the Shades of Green discount for it to do me any good since my DH is a DOD Civilian and we already get that discount.

I think the perfect option would be to allow us to buy the Florida residents pass or something similar to it. Universal has a Annual Power Pass with blackout days, Disney could do something similar for DVC members.

One thing I wanted to mention; while at Vero Beach this summer I meet a very nice DVC sales guide that was vacationing and her comment was that they are trying to get something done but that Disney management (not DVC management) says they don't need to give us any better discounts because we are already coming to the parks. I just wish there was a way to let them know that there are quite a few DVC members that would spend more time in the parks if there was a better discount on passes.

Just my 2 cents.

Lori

I agree with the "no entitlement" statement, and feel I've received the contracted value within DVC. However, I strongly agree with the poster who said DVC members would probably spend more time in the parks (and therefore more $$$ in restaurants and shops) if an AP discount were offered. I know we would.... We routinely plan for non-park days when we're on PH's (and skip a trip to time an AP renewal better) and have also started to discover we can stay at Disney but enjoy other entertainment in Orlando!

I've no need to feel appreciated by a multi-national corporate entity....

Two concepts I'd like to question.

1) That "there are quite a few DVC members that would spend more time in the parks if there was a better discount on passes." Some members of a very small and non-representative group (that is, the DVCers on the DIS) would like AP discounts for various reasons. I still don't know if that means that the rest of the DVC owners (that is, the vast majority) would spend more than the discount would cost. To be honest, I don't know if anyone - even Disney - can answer this with certainty.

2. OK, for the sake of discussion, assume an AP discount saves each DVCer $100 per pass. Assume also (as many of you suggest) that this leads to increased on-site expenditures of $300 (Ignore for now how much additional spending would actually have to take place to make the AP discount a net benefit for Disney). Why is everyone so jazzed up about a "discount" that will cost them up to $200? I realize that some of this money may be shifted - that you would spend it anyway, but now you'll spend it on-site - but, with Disney simply so much more expensive for meals and souvenirs, won't this "savings" end up costing most of you more $$$? I can't figure out why people want something that will end up costing them more....

I believe it is more a question of who gets the money. My daily spend on holiday is relatively constant across many vacations (Disney and non-Disney). An AP discount just means that Disney is likely to capture more of the money.

I read your great question about an hour ago. I went to answer it, but then I couldn't! I thought about the fact that I micro-manage my money. I consider every purchase I make, from a soda to a house. But then I had to consider why I would be more inclined to spend more money at Disney if they offered me a discount (and not a tiny one). I could not put it into words, but then while watching Fox and Friends on TV they had the pets on that are up for adoption sponsered by PetSmart. I thought about how I always buy my pet food at PetSmart and while it is more expensive, it is my way of saying thank you for the great job you are doing for the unwanted pets.

I thought about how, if I have a coupon for a restaurant I will be more likely to eat there without a coupon, because I appreciate the fact that they gave me a little something.

So while it may not make sense to you why someone like me would be willing to spend $300 when I am only saving $100 and costing me $200, it has to do with the way I feel about the business. If it is a business that has more than it's best interest at heart and one that is willing to woo me once in a while, it is a business that I will support.

Well, I'd certainly use an AP discount if it was offered, but I also am happy with my purchase, whether we get any discounts or not.

As far as "spending more", like in the previous posts...
still not a HUGE incentive for Disney. Even if we were to spend $200 after saving $100 on a pass...

Out of that $200 (which is really only $100 in "extra" spending), Disney has to pay stock cost for product, employee wages and benefits, and pther "operating" expenses. If we simply paid full price for the pass that $100 is full profit, at no additional cost or expenditure to Disney.

So many folks say they pay "cash" so Disney can't track their purchases on key cards, but Disney also has to have ways to justify a discount by verifying that the individual that gets thiose discounts is actually spending more $$$.

For instance, take the old MKC/Disney club. If the bean counters figured that the cost of administering the "club" was more than the "additional spending" benefits for the company, the club died.

Oh, forgot to add to my earlier post that (actually, my husband just got up and mentioned this to me):

We have APs at USF/IOA. We stay there (usually) for 3 days. While there, we eat every single meal at the hotel or park. We always drive and could easily (much easier than at WDW) drive off-site to eat, but we don't. Why? Because USF gave us such a good deal with the APs, and gave us a great discount at the hotels that we wanted to return some of that great good will back to them. We even go to USF while we stay at DVC.

It may not make sense to some, but that is the way it is for us.

Also to Chuck,
So many folks say they pay "cash" so Disney can't track their purchases on key cards, but Disney also has to have ways to justify a discount by verifying that the individual that gets thiose discounts is actually spending more $$$.

I completely understand why Disney does it, but exactly what discounts are you talking about? For example, if I go to the Japanese restaurant at Epcot that gives us a discount at lunch, I do use my key card, so that they can see that I am taking advantage of my DVC discount.

This was in response to posters that say that they always pay "cash" on property so Disney can't track their spending habits. But, if Disney has no way to track DVC spending, there is no way for them to justify an even greater discount to the bean counters.

Well, I am one of those that pays cash, but I will use a room key if it is a place that gives a discount. The way I figure it, if I use cash at all other places (which is really not that many, because I spend very little at WDW) then Disney will assume that I am not spending any money. And then maybe they will give us a discount! Probably flawed thinking, but it makes me feel better ;) .

Any news on the recent poll DVC was conducting concerning member discounts?

I'd like to see discounts on Park Hopper passes. Not a must have, but a "would feel more appreciated" wish....

Sure looks like the already got my deal folks are in the minority....

Well, I would certainly feel more appreciated. Even though we do dump major amounts of money at WDW, I feel we do get what we paid for, so I certainly don't feel they owe us anything. What they owe us we got already.

I do find it amusing that nobody feels greedy!! :)

This poll shows you to be in the small minority in that view.....
