DVC is.... you choose

Someone asked me if DVC is really that nice compared to other on site resorts. My answer was an easy “yes”. Then I was asked after pointing out some of the amenities and stating that it was called a “home away from home” resort, how it compared to my own home. I had a tough time deciding.

I don’t have a balcony, I do have a deck, I like the balcony better… so on and so fourth.

On a room-to-room basis, is DVC a step up, down or equal to your own home in quality?

I know most homes are larger and have more rooms and don’t have built in restaurants and such, but if you were to compare the level of the given accommodations at your DVC resort to the same amenities in your own home, are you stepping down/ up/ equal to your current quality level on average?

E.g. I don’t have a spa tub, but I have a better sink area, so I would consider that part a wash (no pun intended).

An interesting poll. I didn't answer because I don't know what choice to make. Our house is so dissimilar to DVC that nothing really fits. (Our house is over 100 years old) We're about 2200 sf, but that includes 12 rooms not including entrance foyer, or the laundry, workshop, or exercise rooms in the basement.

So we have smaller rooms, but the decor (old as it is) is old time craftsmanship. Our kitchen is definitely better (Totally remodeled). Our front porch is huge compared to a DVC balcony but the back concrete patio is nothing special. Except for the spa tub, we have everything our 'home away from home' has, but just different.

So I don't think DVC is either a step up, step down, or even the same. As I look at the woodwork here in the 'office' room, well they just don't make houses this way anymore.

So I guess I'd have to say that our DVC 'home' is just too dissimilar to our current home to even make a comparison.

Maybe a 'Too dissimilar to even compare' category is needed.

I can't compare them either. If you asked to compare one resort to another somewhere else in this country then I could. I will say this that the bath area in the one bedroom at OKW is better than ours and much bigger. Also it was 9 degrees last night here in Connecticut so I would say that anything in Florida has a big plus to it this time of year. As far as other resorts that my wife and I stay at as long as you are just counting the accomadations area I would say OKW has a very slight edge because of the large bathroom area they have. The rest of the area at OKW is equal to or less than other resorts I have stayed at.

I'm saying to compare each room/amenity at a DVC resort to that amenity in your home, if you can. If you can't, you have to justify why to yourself and ask the question is it better. Then take an average for your answer.

Caskbill's point about an old home and what it offers is valid because one may not be better/worse/or the same due to an intangeble quality. If I lived in a Frank Lloyd Wright (sp) home, it may be a maintenance nightmare, but historical. I wouldn't compare the 2 in that case.

I didn't say this was going to be easy for everyone.

I am voting that DVC is better. I would not have bought a vacation home that I considered a step down from my normal everyday living.

I haven't actually voted because I haven't visited my other home yet! If I did vote I would probably say a step up - my everyday home isn't in WDW!

Until they put a big screen TV in a 1BR....I'm afraid it's a step down from my home.

Although it does have a much nicer pool!

The smaller the TV, the better the pool....and if the reverse is true, I'll take a moist dixie-cup and a drive-in-theater screen

I did "vote" for a step-down....not taking into account the location, the amenities of the main hotel, etc. I thought you were talking about the accommodations themselves.

So I think I have a nicer refrigerator, carpeting, furniture, etc in my home.

And I'm getting a jacuzzi tub at home in a month...so that was the last missing piece!

I voted a step up just for the lack of clutter Seriously, since we have no pool nor jacuzzi tub, and no beautiful view from our decks, I consider it a step up. I always tell dh that I'd trade our house in a minute for the 2br at OKW.

When I'm at DVC (1 bedroom), I often think that I could live in a place like that permanently. Love the walk-in shower and the dishwasher! The bathroom at home is too small for a walk-in shower and the kitchen is too small for a dishwasher! I laugh when people complain about having to load the dishwasher, I consider it one of the luxuries!

We have lots of video of the 1-br at BW and the 2-br at HH. We have thought about finding a contractor to build a similar home. But then as someone else said, we too have too much stuff. Then the view would never be right, and the atmosphere. Oh well, I guess that's why we have "real" homes and "magical" homes. I guess to vote on the post I would have to say equal since we have a beautiful almost new home with tons of features, except the magic of course. That alone, along with the weather, brings the value of my "magical" home up to par with my "real" home .

I voted a step up since the climate is much better than where I live! LOL

Plus I dont have someone come in evey 8th day to doa full cleaning!


Plus the bathrooms are larger and nice than mine (but we are working on that!)

I do have someone who comes in once a week and does a full cleaning. On Thursdays, and on Monday's she does a "trash and tidy" for me. I've never called it a "trash and tidy" before, but that's pretty much it. She makes beds, picks up toys, and throws the dishes into the dishwasher after the weekend. She even does my sheets and towels.

Now, I don't live near the MK, but I live close to a lot of stuff to do. And I don't have a pool. But I do have a nice view of a pond surrounded by oaks. And I'm in Minnesota, so right now its 10 degrees and snowing.

It's definately a step-up...not the rugs or bath or countertop...but Epcot is not my backyard iin Freeland, MD! (just snow and ice and melted then frozen slush and so on). Sandie
