DVC Disneyland Points up "Dramatically"

WOW I am lost.....Say I want to stay at the grand California and I have 150 points to use. Would it be smarter to rent and pay cash or use the points. I need it broken down in dollars. That may help me get what is being said.

Well I figured it out an I must say it doesn't seem to be that much of a value for us DVC members. The way it is sold to us definitely did not make it seem that the points to stay on Disney's other properties would be so high. Of course I emailed DVC and let them know of my dissappointment. Hopefully if enough members grumble they will try and get us more for our points. I can sort of understand the craziness from non-Disney resorts but to have no attempt to even try to get reasonabble points from Disney is really shocking.

No, that isn't quite correct.

DVC rents out points that have been used for the non-DVC options (except for II and one other - I think the Lake Buena Vista Trading Company) to get cash to send to the providers of the non-DVC options. (For the II & LBVTC options, DVC actually deposits "time" / DVC room nights to pay for the exchange).

Breakage income does reduce maintenance dues. However, it is the result of DVC renting any unreserved point inventory at the 60 day or less mark.

So, is it the case then if a DVC member uses their points at a non-dvc disney resort, then disney gets both dues for those points as well as the cash income from renting them out?

Rent and pay cash is the way to go.

Dues pay the operating costs of the resort. Disney does not make a profit on those costs (by contract). Owners pay dues on the points they own even if they let their points expire.

Most of the cash goes to the non-DVC resort - for example, if you pick the Kohler resort in Wisconsin, DVC pays Kohler for your accomodations - DVC doesn't keep the cash.

It costs moeny to rent the rooms out. I believe that DVC pays CRO to rent the DVC rooms out - CRO is just like a Travel agent in this case.

Best wishes -

So, if I used 300 points to book a room at grand californian, would dvc give the grand californian whatever money they made selling a cash reservation using the 300 points, or is there a set amount they are paying disneyland?

I'm sure it's a set amount. My understanding is that the amount(s) are negotiated on an annual basis.

Same applies at Disneyland Paris. We have stayed there a couple of nights in recent years, but the rates for this year have increased dramatically and are now very poor value.

I wonder how long DVC can continue pushing the Disney Collection as a feature of our membership?

This amounts to an additional loss in program flexibility and variety.

It just keeps getting less flexible, but I would have purchased DVC even if there were no other options. I saw the trades as a perk but it didn't affect my decision in buying.

Agree.

IMHO....using precious DVC points @ DL vs. WDW...is... for me, a no brainer.

Absolutely NOT !!

I spent a week @ DL in July for the NFFC convention...it was my 2nd time to DL.

Since DL seemed not to be a walking challenge, as is WDW, I chose to stay off site (@ Marriott Res. Inn), studio suite w/kitchen, LR and with hot breakfast, free shuttle bus to DL (about 3 blocks away). It was wonderful..the MRI was $89./per night.

Can't picture spending the big $$ for GC, PP either.
Think I'd do it for the GF or Poly though..:hyper:
