Surprised by the number of votes for a DVC cruise ship when asked, “What would be your first preference for an offsite DVC Resort? (See recent poll http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=711791).

I’m not sure if I would be interested in a DVC Timeshare Cruise Ship but it would be nice if they made it easier to use DVC points for a Disney cruise. My vote would be to replaced the current Disney Cruise line point conversion charts and with the ability to apply vacation points to a Disney cruise vacation by using a straight conversion of one vacation point for every $10 of the Disney cruise purchase.

Do folks really want a DVC Cruise Ship as their home resort?

- Just want a better exchange rate for my DVC points towards a Disney Cruise
- I want a Disney Cruise Ship as my home resort
- I want a Dedicated DVC Timeshare Cruise Ship as my home resort
- Not interested in using my points for a Disney cruise

I was torn, but I guess I don't care if it's DEDICATED or not - but yes, I'd LOVE to have an easier time using points for another cruise.

It seems to me they basically kill you with using points for a cruise!!! I tried to use points for our upcoming 3 night cruise. They wanted $1779.00 plus 128 points for the 4 of us!!! I booked through costco for 2035.00!!! Even the CM said it wasn't worth it to use the points!

We rented out our points to pay cash for the cruise I have no plans on ever converting points to a cruise through MS it is a waste of time and points plus this will likeley be the only time we do a cruise.

Yeah, that was our thought with our 4 day wonder cruise in May '03. We have since done FIVE cruises and have three more reservations. You think WDW is magical?? Wait until you cruise.

YMMV, of course!

I wonder what the response would be from folks on the Disney Cruise board. While current DVC members may or may not be interested in buying into a cruise ship, I bet the response from frequent cruisers--folks who have no interest in land-based DVC--would be much different.

What would really be nice is several DVC Members Cruises at different times throughout the year to make it possible for more people to attend...maybe one quarterly? Along with it, of course, would be a reasonable cruise fare in which the prices weren't inflated and a decent exchange rate for those choosing to cruise w/points. I know -- I live in a fantasy world!!!

I voted just want a better point exchange. However, it would be WAY cool to have it as a DVC (maybe not my home resort, but an option).

The economics of building and operating a cruise ship are very different than developing and running a vacation condo resort on land. I imagine there are good reasons why neither the major cruise lines nor the major timeshare companies have expanded into timeshare cruise ships.

Fine. Go ahead and burst the bubble we were dreaming up. ;)

Isn't Disney about making dreams come true, though. :teeth:

While I would use DVC points for a cruise, I think a cruise ship as a home resort option is an incredibly harebrained idea. JMHO.

Ohiominnie I am going on the cruise only because it is an extended family thing my family and my in laws are all joining us I am not a fan of water at all so the idea of a cruise is not high on my list of things to do. I am doing this for my family I also do not care for boats ships or otherwise. I do not even go to the beach LOL.

While I am not certain, I think there is already one cruise ship as a timeshare. I know there are several houseboat and sailing boat options. There is also a condo cruise ship if it's still operating. I would agree the economics are quite different and risky. But if it could be worked out otherwise, I could see it working in DVC better than any other timeshare system. Just remember that the points would likely be as high or higher as they are now for prime time. Maint fees should work out fine at the DVC rate. Obviously you'd have to have set days like 3/4 or 7 days or some semblance thereof.

You may be thinking of Cruiseshares ( see http://www.cruiseshares.com ).

Cruiseshares received a lot of publicity when they announced that they would convert Premier Cruise Lines' 37,783 GRT Rembrandt (former Holland America Rotterdam, built 1958) into a timeshare cruise ship -- but that fell through.

Cruiseshares' website now shows the 5,200 GRT Vacation Voyager. Most of the website doesn't work, and I was unable to Google any indication that the ship is actually operating or that this venture is still alive.

I would buy into a DVC DCL in a heartbeat!
But would you buy if the annual dues were thousands of dollars per year? It takes a large crew, a lot of fuel, and substantial food and entertainmant expenses to operate a cruise ship.
