Anyone know if there are duties applicable on Laptop Computers when bringing them in to Canada from the U.S? I realize taxes will be assessed...

Thanks!

Deleted previous erroneous post. There is no duty on computers regardless of where they are manufactured.

A few years ago I went down to Seattle for Black Friday sales and got a laptop. Had to pay tax in Washington, then crossing boarder, had to pay PST & GST, so after the dust settled, I don't think I really saved much.
But if you are going on a trip and will be out of the country over a week (I think) you don't pay anything.

We have bought a few from Toshiba direct..they have been running about $400 less than the cost here. Usually-we time them when we have a trip planned...ship them to Buffalo and collect after we return having claimed as goods to follow. We ordered one for a friend..and she is just going down to pick up and declare on her way back, that's why I asked..she doesn't have an exemption to use this time.

Thanks all!

We bought DD a Compaq laptop at Best Buy in Buffalo about 2 years ago, we declared it at the border. We paid the GST on it and were given a green customs card so that if anything went wrong with it and it had to be returned for repairs we would not have to pay GST on it again.
Best Buy Canada will send it out for repair but you must pay for the repair and back claim it from the American company for the first year of manufactures warranty.
HP,Toshiba et all will not cover major components like motherboard, CPU video card, they will however cover the harddrive ( figure that one out) in Canada with an American bought machine.
I discovered all this when the harddrive died after 3 weeks contacted HP direct they sent a new harddrive to my home, then the CPU and Motherboard died about 5 months later and I was told the above by our local Best Buy Geek Squad. This was after having to travel back when the screen cracked which Best Buy Buffalo replaced free due to PSP plan, best $99.00 I ever spent.
The laptop itself was about $550 cheaper in Buffalo than here at home.
Bottom line here claim it get the green custom card and buy the $99.00 PSP plan IMHO.
