Dumbo's Peanuts

Is there really anyone that thought that Disney would put real peanuts in the ground? You realize that you can't walk on real peanuts and expect them to not break, right? If they were real and under plexiglass they would be harmless but I doubt that they would keep their fresh look.

I understand the concern over real peanuts but it would seem to be more worrisome that restaurants serve foods that include peanuts and that you are surrounded by tons of tourists who may have eaten something made with peanuts. I can't imagine being so nervous about what clearly are fake peanuts.

Unless you are four years old!

You all need to stop and think for a minute yourselves. Have you walked in my shoes? My sons?

I've not had a reaction anywhere near that severe, but I have had to quickly grab my inhaler, as the wind shifted and I got a face full of firework smoke.

I wasn't trying to be mean, but you really do need to stop and think things thru. A trip to WDW will mean being around peanuts. It can't be good for you or your son if you are going to be stressing out about them the whole time. You need to figure out how to handle his food allergies without being thrown into a panic by the simple presence of peanuts , because they will be around. If you can't just walk away from them, I'm not sure what you are going to do.

Awesome!!! Disney Rocks!! Thx for sharing. Can't wait to see in September! :yay:

Please be sensitive to other peoples problems..
My niece also has a severe peanut allergy...not only to eating, or touching but also breathing in peanut odors..

She GOT very upset when she saw a store with peanuts in a display case...and she was only 7 at the time...she knew what would happen if she got to close to it....SO some kiddos know the outcome of the result of being around peanuts.....

Thanks:)

How do your kids go out? I am just curious. What if someone just ate peanuts and then went on the Dumbo ride and touched everything. Then you kid comes along and sits in it. Will they have an allergic reaction? Not trying to be snarky...I am just curious.

My son has to carry an epi-pen everywhere he goes. Any place with lots of people and peanutty snacks is very nerve wrecking for him. Up until last year we went 13 years incident free. Then out of no where playing football with friends, and sitting in one of his classes he went into anaphylactic shock. He has to give himself a shot in the thigh and I have to get him to the hospital for medical attention. Those shots give him about 10 minutes before the reaction occurrs again. His body will cycle through them and our stay at a hospital could last hours. The. He is put on a steroid pack for 5 days. When he was younger he had to take atarax daily which is like a RX strength benedryl. It knocks h out for hours.

From my one question some of you judged me as a complainer, the reason why things are ruined for others, and you gave me the aptitude of a four year old. Then you mocked me, considered I am the reason for my son's anxiety, and you won't even except the fact that I have a son with anxiety issues. You analyze me based on a question. I haven't seen these peanuts other than through a photo on-line and my perception my not be yours and you might not react the way I do because of our experiences. I have learned not to assume anything and to take as much precautions as I have to because nothing is more precious than my children.

Even if it makes me look silly on a message board.

Hopefully you will never have to go through something like this. It is frustrating for me and my son and remember he is not like most kids his age.

I work with special needs students too. Working with them and raising one is not one in the same.

I gotta be honest, from your first post I thought your son was a pre-schooler, but now I see he's a teenager.

You all need to stop and think for a minute yourselves. Have you walked in my shoes? My sons?

...

You people are unbelievable!

Why? You quoted my post, and say that I "need to stop and think". Here's my post again:

Or,what if they're real, and just lying there, not cleaned up yet? What do you do if someone has just spilled their snack?

Can't I ask a question? :confused3 It's an honest question, and one that I'd like answered. What do people with severe peanut allergies do, in this situation?

I expect that in your son's lifetime, he will accidentally encounter peanuts spilled on the ground. What will you or he do then?

They carry epi-pens. The epi will save their life if they go into anaphylaxis.

I raised a kid with a tree not (but not peanut) allergy. It's hard and scary. If it hadn't been for epi-pens, I don't know how I would have handled it.

Wait, I do. He'd have died when he was five...so I wouldn't have had to have handled it.

You give them the shot of epi and then take them to the hospital.

My son got the epi shot when he was five and still remembers it. In 22 years, it's his most traumatic memory...the inability to breathe, followed by the pain of the needle. Very frightening for an adult. A world of fear, pain and confusion for a child.

If it can be avoided, it's a good thing to avoid.

I might have gotten carried away with the quote function sorry to not answer your question before.

In the past we would turn the other way. Check our shoes and clothing wash are hands. We avoid places that serve those buckets of peanuts. Once when he was little he picked up a peanut shell in a home depot. Who would expect to find them there? We immediately went into a restroom and washed his hands but I held the hand that handled the peanut so he disney put his hand in his mouth. One of his repetitive behaviors is fingers in the mouth.

We took him to a professional baseball game as a true test. We brought four epi pens and figured children's hospital was around the corner lets test to see if this is airborne. He did not react but his anxiety did not allow him to have any fun.

Now we are being extra cautious because he is reacting with no known peanut evidence around.Three times last year. All it takes is a small trace to put him into shock. If he could keep his fingers out of his mouth, I think we'd be more successful.

I will be happy to answer your questions about severe peanut allergies. The more the public is informed the more understanding and compassion people will have for others. His allergies don't stop there though he is also allergic to eggs, peas, penicillin, cats and dogs. Personally eggs are the hardest to avoid, they are in lots of things.

We have encountered it... In line for a ride, after waiting 45 mins or so, we see that someone had spilled peanuts for the next few yards or more (basically as far as we could see)... We turned and left the queue, alerted a CM to the problem and returned later after we were hopeful that it had been cleaned up. Fortunately it had been cleaned and after waiting in line again we we're able to ride.

That is how you have to work through or around things. I have to constantly remind him don't touch the railings in lines, wash your hands, etc. You never know where the spot is that is going to trigger the reaction. Thanks for your posts!

While at Disney: We have had to pay extra to purify our room and asked for special cleanings. I have to call ahead at all restaurants we eat at and see what he can eat or if he can eat there. And then they ask me to call again the week before our ADR to remind the Manager that we are coming. That is getting easier and Disney is very accomodating. We once were at a restaurant that didn't have anything he could eat even though they told me he could over the phone, so the chef walked to another restaurnat, got some of their food and prepared it for him. :)

Some children's peanut allergies are severe enough that yes, it could cause a severe reaction. But not the majority. My daughter has to ingest To trigger a severe reaction. Upon contact with peanut or bi-product she will break out n hives, though....and has before....but Benadryl has taken care of that thus far. Peanut allergies are one if not the worse allergy for severe reaction upon very small amounts of exposure, and why it is prohibited in schools, etc. more than other allergens. That is why us parents of children with such allergies carry epi pens to combat accidental exposure. I also carry Clorox wipes and wipe down what I can to minimize risk as my daughter is too young to understand at this stage of life. We are blessed to live in a time where we can manage this with little inconvenience!

I didn't get it at all before I had my daughter so I understand! Our bodies sure can be WIERD.

Thanks for answering my question.

Anytime, lol.

DS didn't have a serious contact allergy. He'd just get some hives, take a Benadryl...that was that. He had to eat (even the teeny-weeniest amount of) a nut product to set the About To Die stuff in motion.

Ever want info, I'm only too happy to help.

I was never over the top about it, though. Not big on wiggling out for no reason. Never expected the rest of the world to change their behavior, didn't make chefs come talk to me, etc.

I do, of course, get a little put off when ignorant people suggest that these kind of allergies - bee stings, nuts, et cetera - don't exist. They do. And it is so scary when it's your kid.

Wouldn't the sweeping process make it worse? There were still traces of peanut there as well - it's the contact created when friction is applied (sweeping) that makes it really dangerous. Also, unless the peanuts were spilled right in front of you, everyone in line ahead of you had been stepping on them, kicking up peanut particles, and the air would have had particles in it. Not sure why just walking carefully around the peanuts (or carrying a small enough child over the mess) wouldn't have also worked? If the person with an allergy hadn't already reacted to the particles in the air, what was the danger of the pieces on the ground?

For us the "danger" was more psychological for my older son (he saw them and wanted to leave ASAP) as well as trying to keep my younger son from wanting to touch them, roll in them, lick them, you name it! It was easier to just walk away... And fortunately, when we went back there was no sign of them and the line was shorter so we did not have to stand in that area but were able to just buzz right by.

I would think the particles in the air dissipate pretty quickly in an open-ish environment, it's not like we were in a sealed tunnel!

JFTR, We live life, take reasonable precautions, are prepared in the event of an incident, and pray! So far, mostly so good!

You all need to stop and think for a minute yourselves. Have you walked in my shoes? My sons?

Have you watched your son or daughter's face, tongue, eyes, nose and throught swell up to the point of not being able to breath? Did you have to ride in an ambulance with your child at age 10 months from a small taste of peanut butter from your finger feeling helpless? Have you been called from your child's school to come get them because they are going into anaphylactic shock? Does your child have Asperger's syndrome and have extreme anxiety issues because they think in literal terms and can't see humor easily in everything?

You people are unbelievable!

I never called and complained to anyone at Disney. I don't blame anyone for my son's issue. We work aroud them. Knowing the facts helps me to carry that out.

It's breathe.

ETA: I am slightly curious how a 10 month old ate peanut butter when its a well known fact that you shouldn't give peanut butter to a child that young.

And yes, I know the concerns and fears of having a child so highly allergic to something that it can cause death. But you ARE aware that theme parks are not peanut free, correct? And even if you were to walk over REAL peanuts that are buried into concrete, nothing will happen. Believe me.

And my thought when you said that you called WDW to ask if they were real was basically this:
WTFIsThis.gif

Can't see your pic... bandwidth exceeded

As far as it being a "well known fact" I call b.s. It totally depends on the doctor, the family's history, etc... both of my teens had pb as toddlers, and the only reason my 4yo ds didn't is because of his brother's allergies...
