Dumbo's Peanuts

you won't be seeing any bugs at Its Tough to b a Bug next time because I am complaining to Disney since my son is highly allergic to bug bites.

I haven't seen a post on this thread yet asking for them to be removed or any such overreaction. To have a moment of 'yikes peanuts' with a child with severe peanut allergy is not unreasonable. Research the allergy to learn why parents get anxious...it has some of the most severe reactions of any allergy, is more prevelant than many allergies, and the reactions can be caused by a surprisingly tiny amount of exposure to the allergens. Add to the complication that peanuts are pretty ubiquitous used in many products you would never guess as a cheap thickening agent, etc...any parent of a peanut allergy child is taught be the drs to be anxious and not let their guard down.

With that...I still think the peanuts are a fun touch but the "wow" initial reaction is understandable. I would ask for more sensitivity from everyone.

research it? my kid has it. he once accidentally ate some nutella my daughter dropped on the ground and he looked like will smith in "hutch". to be that scared of it as a kid, either you had a near death bad reaction (which i can understand) or your parents brain washed you as a child into overreacting. my child with allergies is 2 and he already understands items he can not eat and we dont scare him to the point he has anxeity about them. he knows he cant have it so we give him something he can. disney parks are awesome at understanding allergies.

My daughter has a contact allergy to apples. I guess we have to get rid of anything that looks like an apple at WDW? Goodbye Snow White?

I understand the fear - my mom almost died from an allergic reaction to those red pepper flakes at a pizza parlor. Older daughter's poison ivy allergy is getting worse every year - now she can't eat fresh mango as it is too similar to something in poison ivy. Contact allergy there too. For years I worked with a student with a latex allergy - iairborn issues there. I understand the seriousness of allergies.

But peanuts on the ground - one does not need to hyperventilate and run screaming in the other direction (unless you are in a Fantasia movie, and the peanuts start marching around you).

I love the peanuts and the details. Disney works really hard at creating the 'perfect' looks to make everyone's vacation that much more magical.

As time goes on, it seems to get harder and harder to please people. I really feel for Disney (or any other company) that has to put up with all the public negativeness when all they are trying to do it to allow people a FUN time. A FUN TIME!!!

You said it! My girls rode Dumbo at the end of a long day at MK last week. They were so delighted by the peanuts. Leave it to the DIS to complain about theming.

So that's the real reason they closed SWSA! :lmao:

Is there really anyone that thought that Disney would put real peanuts in the ground? You realize that you can't walk on real peanuts and expect them to not break, right? If they were real and under plexiglass they would be harmless but I doubt that they would keep their fresh look.

I understand the concern over real peanuts but it would seem to be more worrisome that restaurants serve foods that include peanuts and that you are surrounded by tons of tourists who may have eaten something made with peanuts. I can't imagine being so nervous about what clearly are fake peanuts.

Yeah, this!! ^ ^

There is a lot of complaining in this thread, but the common sense is lacking. Real peanut shells would be broken if stepped on, turned into squish in the frequent downpours of rain, decomposed by the heat and chipped into pieces by children.

People walk through the park eating peanuts...if somebody is going to have a reaction, it will most likely be to that.

Sweet, VERY Disney-type special touch. I can't believe anyone (above 12) would actually think they are real despite their appearances. I mean, really???? Come on. Disney is perfect at making a fake looking anything.

Yes, I had called WDW every day ever since her allergy developed, telling them that she wasn't allowed equal access because she had to stay away from apples! :lmao:

The little brat scared me to death last night - she's up at our very rustic family cottage with her Dad and his parents. Seems that her Nana gave her a drink that had apple juice in it, and my darling 18 year old did not have any benadryl with her. 10 PM at night, half way up a mountain in the middle of nowhere, and she's texting me. Luckily, the apple content must have been pretty minimal, as she 'only' got very, very itchy all over. Her breathing was not affected (this time) and she seemed to think she was 'outgrowing' her allergy. Yeah, NO! She was just extremely lucky that it was a mild response, as the benadryl that should be in the bathroom closet was missing.

Agreed. The poster who was worried enough to call needs to think about things a bit. The Disney parks are not peanut free, and they will need to handle being around them without panicking.

Disney is not an allergen free park, but they don't go out of their way to place known allergens in people's paths either. But even if they had been real, couldn't you have just walked around them?

And if they were real, and embedded in the concrete, what would you do?

Does your four year old think the snakes in the Great Movie Ride are real? Or the spiders in It's Tough to be a Bug? Or the camels at Aladdin's Flying Carpets? Or any of the animals on the Jungle Cruise?

Or,what if they're real, and just lying there, not cleaned up yet? What do you do if someone has just spilled their snack?

I am waiting for the first lawsuit that claims a peanut allergy reaction to the fake peanuts.

I love the peanuts on the ground.

why would disney put real peanuts on the ground or even think they would? my kid has tons of allergies too but that is kind of out there to think that. my son also has a milk allergy (even to the touch) but i dont freak out everytime I see the drippings of a Mickey bar on the ground. Maybe I should call Disney and have them ban Mickey bars from the park.

You all need to stop and think for a minute yourselves. Have you walked in my shoes? My sons?

Have you watched your son or daughter's face, tongue, eyes, nose and throught swell up to the point of not being able to breath? Did you have to ride in an ambulance with your child at age 10 months from a small taste of peanut butter from your finger feeling helpless? Have you been called from your child's school to come get them because they are going into anaphylactic shock? Does your child have Asperger's syndrome and have extreme anxiety issues because they think in literal terms and can't see humor easily in everything?

You people are unbelievable!

I never called and complained to anyone at Disney. I don't blame anyone for my son's issue. We work aroud them. Knowing the facts helps me to carry that out.

I read this whole thread and I believe people are being sympathetic towards your situation. It just struck some as bizarre that you would call DW and ask about what it obviously fake peanuts in the circus tent? Especially because the people on the phone routinely give out incorrect information!

It boggles the mind at times. My Texas neighbor is a smart lady. :cool1:

Actually, my son has Autism and would think they are real. It is MY job to help him to understand they are not. I don't expect the world to be free of challenges and you don't either. People wouldn't be surprised kids would think they are real. If our children have issues w/ them, then that's our job to handle on the spot. Not for Disney to buffer all possibilities of negative reactions. Disney already offers our children such wonderful opportunities to still enjoy the parks when we may not normally be able to given their challenges. I'd hate to see them rein in their hidden humor out of overreaction.

Have a great trip and now that your child can be forewarned, you should hopefully be forearmed. :thumbsup2

I have watched my mother's face do that. My daughter had an allergic reaction last night, in the middle of nowhere, with no benadryl. We never know when her reaction will go from moderate (itchy rash all over, tongue/mouth fuzzy) to severe, so when she gets home she will be in the doghouse for a while. That's after I hug her in relief.

I'm not falling for the 'Asperger's Syndrome' can't figure it out, anxiety ridden excuse either. I've worked for years with students with Asperger's syndrome. I've found that most of their anxiety issues come from their parents. Do a simple social story for the event that he does see peanut shells on the ground somewhere. Don't work around them, work through them.

I don't think anyone was intentionally trying to be unsympathetic to your situation but your worry seems a little unnecessary and can't be good for you are your son. If it were me I would be less worried about the peanuts covered in who knows what to keep them stuck in the ground and more worried about the family feeding their kids peanut butter crackers in line.

I love how well Disney does everything down to the littlest detail!

Yes, why?
Also, the pirates at POC!
