dumb tipping question

I've asked around quite a bit, but no one can confirm for me whether mousekeepers get to keep their tips. I think they should - they earn it!

I agree. I certainly hope they get to keep their tips. I suppose there could be some sort of honor system where they all pool their tips. This is actually why I always tip valets both at drop off and pick up. You don't always get the same valet, so unless they pool their tips (and I'm guessing they do) the drop off valet loses out.

(just my 2 cents [ahem!] 2 bucks worth! :teeth:

This is a horrible way to think about it, but...

It seems to go against the "standard", but if you don't tip the person when you drop off the car, they COULD feel disgruntled, and they've got your keys!

The guy to drops off your car - there's no "recourse" for him if he feels under-tipped. You're long gone.

So, as an "insurance policy", I always make sure to tip the person I leave my keys with better than the person that gives me back my car. However, the minimum for the guy that drops off is $2-3. More if it's raining, or if it's cold and he has the car all warmed up, etc, etc. Ususally, I'll throw $5 to the person who parks my car. Maybe it'll wind up parked in a place or way to minimize any accidental dings from other mororists, or maybe it'll be a little more conveinent place (and quicker) when I return.

I never thought of it as a protection racket. They know they will be returning cars and that their tip is dependent on their overall performance, regardless of when they get tipped. Now if you get someone on their last day of employment, that could be an issue. But then they could take off with your car and head for I-4 if they so chose tip or not. Actually a valet parking scheme is a fairly common issue in some large cities.

I have seen where a few extra dollars to the drop off guy can keep your car closer, there by shortening your waiting time at pick up. Also the closer parking is usually in sight distance so the valets can keep a better eye on your car. :ssst: Just a club seceret.
