If this is true, then every 2nd grade teacher in our county is exactly equal to every other 2nd grade teacher in our county. After all, they all have the same textbooks and the same resources -- the same curriculum.

But in reality, we all know that every 2nd grade teacher isn't equal to every other 2nd grade teacher. Some of them are naturally more patient, more kind, more able to explain things on the kids' level. Some of them are more creative, some of them are better at managing classroom behavior. Some just xerox pages from the teacher's resource book, while others put together creative, hands-on projects. Some of them are naturals at organizing the classroom, some of them are strong on teaching reading, and some of them are better at putting together simple science experiements and history projects. Some of these abilities are innate, but much of what they're good at has been TAUGHT TO THEM through the educational process.

So I don't really think it's fair to say that anyone with a curriculum in hand can teach effectively.

Looking at the homeschoolers I know, SOME of them are providing the top-notch college-prep education that you're describing . . . while OTHERS are essentially teaching their children nothing all day long and just using homeschooling as a way to avoid the hassel of adhering to the school's timetable, etc.

I really believe that there will be few "average" homeschoolers. I think half of them will enter adulthood very well prepared, though probably less well-rounded than the typical traditional schooler . . . and the other half will be seriously under-educated and totally unprepared for the real world. I think there'll be very few "in betweens".

Before we start singing the praises or throwing arrows at homeschoolers, I think it's only fair to acknowledge that BOTH groups exist. Which camp are the Duggars in? Probably none of us here know for certain.

Good grief...that is just plain sad. I'm glad you think half might make it, as poorly rounded as they are... It seems to me you are missing the largest percentage of homeschoolers out there, but I doubt you'll ever see that. Those are the students that I know that are the most well-rounded individuals I've met. They are not coralled into same-age peer led environments, but are involved in the real world 7 days a week.

When the schools start graduating well-rounded, knowledgable, responsible students, then you have an argument. Right now, all factors say that isn't the standard. Test scores are crap, remedial classes are filled, and graduates can't write a memo, or count change.

Yes, the Duggars might be crappy homeschoolers. As you say, who knows?

We only get to see one edited hour of each week- and then have to apply common sense to fill in the blanks.

Michelle doesn't have time for each individual child. This doesn't jibe with their lifestyle. Even if they do have buddies. Someone is teaching these kids how to read & write, how to cook, and how to do laundry.

Michelle is very patient & doesn't yell. Well of course not- LOL This isn't candid camera. She knows she's on TV.

The girls are taught to aspire to gender-specific roles & careers. Weren't they learning to weld when they were building the house?

The kids don't have time to play. Well, they're working off their tater tot casseroles somehow. But I spent 2 hours watching my kid play soccer this week. I don't want to watch theirs do it.

JimBob may truly be looking to spread the word of the joys of a bountiful family- or he may just want a free washing machine- but the producer & sponsors are looking to make money from the show. If they do market research & find that people are most intrigued/disgusted by they buddy system, they will play it up...because then we'll keep tuning in.

The address matches up with the address on their website.

If you go to the Arkansas tax website and enter their name it shows $0 for 2006. But if you click on each property (they seem to have the property divided up into multiple sections) it comes up as paid.

I believe what you are seeing there is the family being taxed on additional property they own (the paid taxed amount) and not the primary residence and the land it sits on (the zero amount).

OK...I've been reading this thread and not posting anything since the whole HS subject came up, however the quote above really bothered me. I went to PS and I feel that when I graduated I was well rounded, knowledgeable and responsible, just like many of my other classmates. Yes, my SAT's may not have been the best (my twin and I scored the exact same score on the test), but I went to college, graduated with a BA in English and I'm now a supervisor of guest services at a science center. My twin graduated with a BS in education and is now a special education teacher. Last fall she graduated from grad school with a 4.0 GPA.

Regardless if kids are homeschooled or attend public school, there are some that are well rounded, knowledgeable and responsible and some are not. It's the way the children are raised that would determine this, not the education.

Regarding the Duggars, a thought just came to mind. How are they going to pay for 17 college educations? That's a lot of money! (and my parents thought it was bad for my twin and I )

Anyway, that's just my opinion.

Sorry I offended. Of course many people do well in the PS's. Statistically speaking, probably 1/4 are exceptional. I was one of those, and you were too. My post was directed towards the generalized statements about HSing.

The stats say that I am correct. My facts are accurate. Doesn't mean all PS students will be remedial, nor all HSers will be exceptional. The information is based on averages, as I am sure you are aware.

Don't know how they'll pay for college. Frankly, I worked my way through. Those kids, for better or worse, know how to work, and are responsible to boot. They should be able to find a way!

Well, I talked to DH and we have decided to have 20 children. The reason I am posting this is because we need donations!!! With the money we get we will build a home - uh I mean a church. It will be called "Church of the Most Holy Dust Bunny". We will have several chapters so you will be able to join. We will no longer pay taxes at all. In fact, I will even get a tax exempt number so I can buy groceries tax free. Although once I sell the kids images to the local carwashes and the like I won't need groceries because I will have all the "donations" the church needs. Since the Duggars have cornered the market on Tater Tots I am thinking that maybe we will look into the frozen french fry market or perhaps some mac and cheese. We haven't worked out the details yet. I have informed my 5 year old and 3 year old that it is now their responsibilty to take care of their 20 month old brother and the new baby when she comes along. We no longer have time or money for things like karate and gymnastics. They will each also have to cook dinner and do the laundry. There is a rock and a hose in the backyard so they better hop to it!!! We have also bought all the houses on the block so they may never move away. We are installing a security gate at the front of our compound- uh I mean Community to keep out the Non-Dust Bunny worshippers (heathens!). I will neither HS or PS the girls. The only skills they need to learn are domestic and breeding. The boys will all be sent to Harvard where they will major in civil engineering. The girls will be allowed to read about Laura Ingalls Wilder so they have something to aspire to as well. All the children will learn to play the spoons. We will posts the dates of our recital as soon as I can. There is a fee- uh I mean donation to see them. I will post more as soon as I can. I have to tease my hair up very high as that's the way my DH likes it. All praise the Dust Bunny!!!

I don't know how Ducklite feels about homeschoolers... I was one myself.. I homeschooled my kids for 5 years.. That's 20 years of combined homeschooling experience.. I think homeschooling is a wonderful thing..
I'm concerned, however about their homeschooling, because of what I know about their curriculum.. I may be completely off base on this one issue however, because I admit I do not know enough about their specifics.
Having issues with the Duggars(not the kids) does not = hating large families
Having issues with their homeschooling methods does not = hating homeschooling.
I am an advocate of homeschooling.

have you hit the link on the duggar website to the company they get their curriculum from? i just checked it out and . my kids go to a christian school that incorperates biblical teachings into the curriculum, and i've seen some other christian based homeschooling curriculum- but i've never seen anything as biased and (imo) sexist as this. teaching that a legal contract is a bad thing and always based on distrust? an entire unit on the value of being submissive and weak??? i hopped around the site more and looked at all the 'great' training and educational opportunities for the students in the program-interesting that the bulk of them are restricted to boys (and the ones that are not show few if no girls in the participant photos ), and the ones for women were largly on family, running a household and parenting issues. interesting that one of the advanced courses they offer is on midwifery-but the scope of that program (as the link to it concedes) is not what is required to professionaly practice in many states.

i tend to think, based on this company's website that unless a person was planning on doing their collegiate work through this company-they would find it very difficult to transfer and apply at traditional colleges and universities some if not much of the 'education' they received.

We dont really need to have them meet, maybe on the occasional trip to the roller skating rink bc there really is no need to "date" we can just have your DH who I assume has since become an ordained minister online can just marry the kids and they can live on your land/compound. I mean didnt the prophet Tina Turner once say "what's love got to do with it"

anyone interested in weather the kids get to play-i'de suggest you go to the duggar's own website. according to michelle their usual daily schedual includes 'free time' from 4-5 p.m. but only if a child has finished their individual studies and is'nt slotted for their music studies (and for the designated daughter to prepare the family dinner). dinner is at 5 after which everyone helps clean up as well as clean up the house (i'm guessing between eating and cleaning, maybe they would be done around 6:30? ) so from let's say 6:30 to 8 pm they again get freetime (though again it says they may be doing their music lessons). at 8 p.m. everyone has a snack and gets ready for bed and the hour long bible study session with dad-bedtime is 10 p.m.

the way i crunch the numbers this would indicate that the kids (except the one dd who cooks dinner for the entire family) have roughly 2 1/2 hours per day of 'free time'-but the free time also has to used for completion of studies, music, and to do your chores. i can't imagine given some of the chores these kids do (esp. the household meal preparers and the laundry folks) that much of that time is truly 'free'. i would imagine the youngest given the simplistic nature of their chores get some time for play-but i can't help but think that as they age into more responsibilites there would'nt be much if any time. (i mean good grief-it has to take a significant chunk of time to prep. the meals if just one person is responsible everything-and i have to imagine that there is a constant flow of clothing in and out of the washers and dryers ). either they are incredibly efficient at their chores or (as i suspect) a good portion of the time that michelle allocates to doing their studies is actualy spent on these tasks.

We do not allow dating. They do not have time for such frivolous things as roller skating. The clothes are not going to wash themselves and the french fry casserole will not cook itself! I havn't read all the replies. but if this family wants 17 kids and aren't on welfare!! I say more power to them, I have seen many many Tv shows on them and they Love and Adore each on of those kids
