I'm starting to question things now because I want to help my own children.
Backstory:
I was diagnosed with dyslexia at age 5 when I went through testing to enter a private school. I had problems spelling and had very bad (still have handwriting issues) handwriting. However I was an excellent reader. I was given therapy in the form of written exercises. I did ok in basic math until I hit algebra, almost did not graduate high school because of it. . I was reading at a college level by 5th grade. I love to read and see what I am reading as a movie. I have problems with learning any foreign languages. I am very verbal and have a large vocabulary. I leave words out of paragraphs and don't notice when I re-read it. I also have problems with directions and in order to learn how to get somewhere I use landmarks. It's like I am creating a map in my head. i can not add to it without physically going to a place. What would you really call me? No one seems to know and have called me a dsylexic for lack of a real diagnosis even though I can read a novel in a few hours. Anyone else have any experience with this type of thing? I am very successful in life but I am starting to see these problems in my youngest son and want to help him.

Thank you!

Moving this to the disABILITIES Community Bioard where it will fit better.

I'm not sure where you difficulties fit, but it appears you may have some sort of processing disorder. There are places that test adults if you are interested in knowing (although it sounds you adapted well, testing you might be easier than testing a 5 yr old and would possibly give some insight into both of you).

Ill be interested to hear the suggestions of others.

Most want to put a nice easy label on the broad neurological variations that exist within the population.

That is not reality since much of the variation exists due to a very large number of genetic factors.

It is much more useful to look at the characteristics of these variance and the challenges and gifts that come along with them.

Dyslexia tends to group in the non discriminatory set of characteristics, and can be added to by non linear EF learning style. One of the parlor ways to help tell dyslexia in advanced readers is if you can turn the book upside down and within a short period of time be able to read reasonably fluidly.

As for math, that is just a matter of not having someone who new how to each your in your "style", not you ability.

Thank you both for responding, I tried reading upside down and while I can do it-it was not easy. (Did not try for long ) Then I looked at letters right side up and for a few seconds they appeared to be upside down. It was a very strange experience. Just in case anyone else has any ideas I am going to recap my issues in an easier to understand form below.
Poor spelling
Poor handwriting
Painful to write for long periods-I push down to hard
Read very fast and see it as a movie in my head
Leave words out of paragraphs and do not notice if I re-read.
Poor math skills above basic math
Poor navigation-can not translate from a map to real life. I navigate by landmarks, and create a map in my head. Must actually travel to places to add to my map. I can not connect one place I have been to another unless I physically travel between them.
Unable to learn foreign language in a class setting (tried French, German and Spanish).
I also interrupt people whe talking-my brain is on to the next thing before they can respong(working on this still)
I must have something to do at all times, happiest when I am multi-tasking
Easily bored
Can be abrupt
Sleep 5-6 hours a night
Loud speaking voice-better as an adult but still occasionally an issue.
I talk very fast
I am very social when I need to be but I am perfectly fine being by myself for long periods of time. No one in my life would k is I have these issues-but they are there.
