G'day.

So here's a bit of background -

DS14 has flown several times as an UMNR with Delta. Recently I actually got questioned as to his age when at check-in. He is 13, however will be 14 in Nov. and meeting my wife and I. He is 6' tall and about 250. Your basic O/D-Line type guy, maybe a fullback or tight end. Anyways I digress.

When I confirmed that he was only 13, the desk agent mentioned to me that it would be optional when he turns 14. Delta's website says otherwise, I've yet to call (will be doing so shortly).

I'm actually wondering about Southwest/AirTran and kids flying alone. Anyone with any experience? Ease of use getting a gate pass? Does it depend on the airport, desk agent?

I know using the UMNR with Delta negates this but still paying $200 in total for someone to accompany him seems a little excessive when it adds more than 50% to the ticket price.

My niece (13) flew alone yesterday on SW. I believe their unaccompanied minor stops at 12. My sister was able to get an escort pass at the airport to walk her to the gate. On the other end, my father was able to meet her at the gate.
