Ds Won!!!!

DS won his very first Pinewood Derby race last Thursday!!!!

He and DH worked so hard on the car.....I think Nicholas was more interested in how it looked than if it would win!! After a few trial runs, it wasn't looking very fast, but he only lost one race of one of the heats he was in. You should have seen his face! He turned bright red, his eyes got all teary (just like his mom), then he covered his mouth with his hands and just kind of jumped up and down for a minute. What an awesome moment for him. And I missed it with the camera...I was too excited!!! I got a picture just before, one of the cars at the end of the track, then one of his award....but that face was priceless. His teacher had asked him to bring his car to school the next day and this made it all the more exciting.

Now, on to more races!!!!

Now, for those of us about to start building, can we get some inside tips from the winner?

tstobb....awesome kitchen BTW. I can't give you many details because if it was up to me it would have remained a rectangular block with some wheels put on. I know there was alot of sanding, waxing, and polishing ? of the nails that the wheels were attached with so that they would run more smoothly. I also know that when we got there the car was .3 oz over the limit so Nicholas and DH frantically removed one of the weights....then it was still .1 oz over so DH drilled a hole right in the undercarriage of the thing.....just this "huge" chunk of wood removed. I'll get more details from my DH if you'd like!

The races were extremely close....the top 3 finishers were literally within a hair's width apart at times. We had some great cars...and some hilarious awards for the boys also. One young man designed his car as the Bat mobile....so we gave him the "Best Disguised...who was that masked car??? Award". The awards are the best part IMO.

Wonderful news for your son. Is there a district race he's now eligible for? If so, keep that camera ready because he could do well there too!

Our derby race is this coming weekend. DS2 will be running his first car and won't care less if he wins or not. DS8 will be highly disappointed if he doesn't win - he came in 1st last year and then 6th in district (out of 54). DH is the culprit here, he keeps telling him that he's going to win. I think it's getting his hopes up a bit too much. We'll see.

Congratulations to your son! Mine won his first race this year as a Tiger and he came in second overall in the pack. My Dad helped with his car. It really is alot of fun for the boys and their families.

Another tip for a winning car... from my Dad... make sure that your car is overweight. You can always drill out of the bottom of the car, but adding weight can get too tricky sometimes. Also, polish your wheels as well as the axles (nails.) Dad said that the wheels had alot of burrs on them and needed polishing.

The most important thing is to make sure that the car tracks straight. If it weaves and bobs, it won't win.
