DS just swallowed a penny- GREAT update page 3

Ok, so I figured by age 5 we'd be way past this problem... I guess not. DS just swallowed a penny, and I think he was encouraged by DS and DD. I called the Pediatrician, and pennies made after 1982 are highly corrosive in the stomach due to a high percentage of zinc. DS has also had stomach surgery (a Fundoplication) which may make it harder for him to pass it.

So, I have to watch him closely for the next 2 days and see if it has passed. If not, he will have to go to the hospital to have it removed. So, could you please send prayers that he passes it without trouble? Guess the new piggy bank is being put up.

I had a cup of pennies my daughter got a hold of at 2 and turned the cup right up. Just as if she was drinking her juice. She swallowed about 23 pennies. I was very very blessed she did not choke. I cringe everytime I think of it. They x-rayed her and said she had the most for that month so far. So I imagine it's a common thing to happen. They just said watch for her to pass them.


Your poor little guy. I hope it's not too hard on his stomach. I don't know anything about his sugery, but I've had gastric-bypass. Some foods are tuff on me. I hope this isn't too bad for him.

We kept checking for about 3 days. Our doctor said if she was having regular BM's for the rest of the week not to worry about any blockage. Just keep him posted. He's use to me bugging him since our families are good friend with with each other.

She never had any problems from it. Then again my dd would put anything in her mouth up to about age 6. Thank goodness that phase is over. Keep us posted. I hope everything goes well.

My daughter did the same thing this past Sunday...x-rays on monday showed it made it to the stomach. I have been monitoring her poop (there are some things I will ONLY DO FOR MY CHILDREN!!!) and she hasn't passed hers yet but our dr said if she feels fine and continues her regular bowel movements that she is fine and might have passed it and we missed it. She has a healthy child checkup on Monday and he said we could do another x-ray on Monday to make sure it's gone. I've been a little worried, but she's feeling fine so i'm going to trust him.

The main thing she hates is that everyone keeps asking her about it and the nurse kept calling her their "little piggybank". She failed to see the humor in it...

Guess we're both on the poop watch! Not to be too gross, but are you having to "examine" it closely? I'm thinking of having him go in our old potty (that we used for potty training) so I don't have to fish it out of the bowl. Just watch out for anything listed in that article. Unfortunately, pennies are the worst coins to swallow.

best wishes, prayers and losts of pixie dust going out to all the little ones who think they are piggybanks and must deposit pennies or other coins. I do hope "poop patrol" isn't so bad and is over very fast.

I wouldn't worry too much and here is why. One of my fellow FF daughter swallowed his wifes wedding ring. He waited a few days and called a Dr friend of his about the no show of the rings. The Ped. Dr said not to worry, if it wasn't bigger that a tube sock he wasn't impressed. When Murry asked what he meant he explained he had a child in his care that would eat anything, ie drywall, money and such, but the biggest item was a tube sock..... Now I am not sure how you swallow a tube sock, but it happend and it passed...The mom had to "assist" a little, but I hope that your penny passes a bit quicker and easier, it could be worse.

When we were younger my sister used to swallow all denominations of coins, American and German (Military stationed in Germany). She would do it so that my sister and I could not "steal" her money. The first couple times my mom really freaked out and headed to the emergancy room. By the tenth time my mom knew that it should pass. I do know that lots of kids do it...with a successful outcome! Just keep an eye and hopefully in a few days everything will be done.

Thanks to all. I know for most children passing a penny is not a big deal. However, for my DS is is a big deal becasue of his health history. DS has had several stomach surgeries, the last one which permanently shrinks the size of the entrance and exit of the stomach contents. He was on feeding tubes (could not eat orally) for the first 3.5 years of life. That's why for him it's a bigger deal. They are not sure if anatomically the opening is big enough to let a penny pass. If it isn't they will have to surgically remove it. If a penny stays in the stomach, it can become corrosive and cause ulcers.

Okay...I can't help but ask this, this is the first thing I thought of for some reason. Could you hear them jingling in her stomach when she moved? Yikes, 23 pennies! I'd have had a heart attack!

Our friends' son swallowed two quarters once while we were at a restaurant. He was about 8 or 9 years old. He said he thought it would be fun to play with them in his mouth for a bit and accidentally swallowed them. I think it took him two days to pass them. His mom saved them and framed them for his Christmas present.

I hope this goes smoothly for you all. I would have him poop in the training potty until you find it. You don't want to miss it.

Triplefigs...so sorry...hope all is okay. Make the hubbie share the poop monitoring...and be glad the other two didn't do the same...triple poop monitoring would just be way too much for the tag fairy!

As soon as I saw the title of this thread I knew I had to click on it. When our youngest was 2, she too swallowed a penny - had also been "encouraged" by an older sib, though I've never convinced either of them to give me the details. The x-ray showed the penny hadn't passed through the esophagus, so a pediatric gastroenterologist had to come in and fish it out. He told us it was the 4th time that weekend he'd had to do the same thing! Yup, it's a common kid mishap - good thing most of them stay away from the tube socks.
