DS just swallowed a penny- GREAT update page 3

The "nice thing" about a ring is that it has a nice, big hole in the middle so you could still breathe.

My DS TOLD us he swallowed a penny and I thought no big deal....then we called the DR and they said the same thing the OP says (they are the worst coin because of the zinc). When they did the X-ray they found out he was kidding and did not swallow a penny at all.

Good Luck!! I am sure poop duty is not fun!

Christy

Yes, I have been monitoring her poop VERY closely....UUGGGGHHHH...good for the diet I'll just say as it certainly adjusts my appetite. Nothing yet, but I think there's a good possibility that it went down the toilet without us knowing it or DD forgot to tell us she went poopy one time (she is a natural blonde in every sense of the world at times! :smooth: ) If we don't see anything, another x-ray on Monday will answer any questions we might have.

Triplefigs: I hope your DS passes his without any problems. I know it's not a huge deal for most, but I can imagine your extra concern for your little one. And it's always a little concerning when it's actual your child and it's the first time you have to deal with it. Keep us posted....

I work in a pediatic office. Our docs always order an X-Ray to make sure the penny is indeed in the stomach and not stuck in the esophagus. Then, if it's not we say to check over the next 3-5 days to make sure that it has passed. If not, we order another X-Ray to check it's progress.

Yes, you will need to use some gloves and closely inspect/mush through the stool to see if the penny is inside. We usually suggest that you place a layer of plastic wrap over the bowl so that the stool doesn't fall into the water. This makes it easier to inspect.

Sorry, I know this has to be about the last thing you wanted to deal so close to your trip. Good luck! Maggie

I'm glad you are keeping your sense of humor while sifting through poop:) I hope the penny makes a comeback in Day 3!!! Poor DS--I hope all the kids learned a good lesson from this. Sounds like something my girls would do...but so far we've just gone through stickers shoved up the nose. Where do they come up with this stuff?

I wasn't trying to make light of you DS issue, I was just saying that there are many much worse items, but with the items you discussed this is important and I will be praying for you all. ( I was also trying to give you a little smile;))

Oh, I didn't take it wrong at all. You were completely correct in your assessment, and there still are MANY worse things that could be happening. I was just explaining why in our case I was a bit more worried than normal. Hopefully the da** penny will make an appearance soon. Although, digging through poop every night is doing a great job of curbing my appetite. Maybe I could come up with a new diet plan! :rotfl2: Thanks for the prayers!

Haven't done the nose yet. I have no idea why they think this is so fun? Maybe I should make him dig through it. He's HATING going on the "baby" potty, so maybe that will be a deterrent in the future? I sure hope so!

Poop Patrol reporting for duty.

To recap: the score was Poop 2: Penny 0. Now we're in the 3rd inning and the score stands:

Poop 3 Penny 0

come on everyone! We need some cheering for the Penny! go penny go! go penny go! (literally! :rotfl2: ) Guess we're headed to the doctor tomorrow for an x-ray. Come on Penny! We're pulling for you!!!!

Good thoughts and prayers heading your way.
My oldest has had 3 open nissen fundoplications and is facing a 4th now so I know the worry you have with that.

Wow! 4 Fundos? You'll be in my prayers! DS had the open fundo in Nov of 2001, and it has been a Godsend. He had a j-tube for a long time and ate nothing by mouth. Now he just eats pennies! :rotfl:

My biggest concern since he hasn't passed it and it's been almost 72 hours is that it didn't make it past the fundo. I'm going to take him for an x-ray tomorrow.

Thanks for the good wishes!

In all the years I've worked with kids thank godness no one has ever swollowed any coins!!!! On the other hand I have had.....
1 pea up the nose
playdough up the nose
popcorn kernel in the ear
2 x's small pebble in the ear( yes, same child! guess he didn't learn the first x , b/c did it again the next day :earseek: !)
All listed above had happy endings!
Good luck with your son, the penny and the poop!I'll send some happy thoughts your way :wizard: !

TRIPLEFIGS - I am so sorry to hear this! Ugh. I am pulling for ya.

Let us know what happens. Prayers coming your way. :grouphug:

Kids can make you age fast! ;) (I know)

I hope that penny makes an appearance for you tomorrow! We haven't dealt with swallowing coins...yet. My oldest has a thing about putting things in his nose though. We've done stickers, peas, peanuts, playdoh and the latest was an attempt at the marbles that come with the Hungry Hungry Hippos. Fortunately they were too big. ;)

In all seriousness, your son will be in my prayers. I hope there will be no surgery needed.

my sister swallowed the silver ball that comes with mouse trap when we were little. it was actually right before we were going away to california. it takes a few days, but it comes out. it'll probably be a different color as well... just to let you know. :)

My ds also swallowed a penny. He was 2 at the time. We had to take him for an x-ray first to make sure it wasn't caught in his esophogas (sp?) but everything ended up okay and he passed it. What a night. I'm sure everything will turn out fine for you too - kids give you gray hair.

Well, went back to the Dr. today (they had their yearly check-ups previously scheduled). Since our little piggybank hadn't made a deposit as of yet, he went ahead and did another x-ray and it HAS moved out of the stomach but it right about in the area where the large and small intestines connect. He prescribed some stool softener just to "move" things along a little and it should be within the next couple of days or so. I hope so because I don't like having to pay for too many appts and x-rays waiting for a penny to come out!! Sheesh.... But the worst of the day was the booster shots she needed and the little one getting chickenpox shot today too....

Ah, the joys of parenting....

Triplefigs, keep us updated on what you find out about your little one!! :goodvibes

23 pennies
TC

:earseek: :earseek: :earseek:

I forever promise that when one of my children does something outrageous and my first inpulse is to overreact I will remember, "23 pennies, 23 pennies, it can't be as bad as 23 pennies" !!! :rotfl:

Triplefigs, what's the update? :wave2:

Just got home from the doctor. DS's Penny has also moved to the lower intestine. Thank goodness! So he is also on a stool softener. Hoping for an appearance in the next couple of days.

Thanks to all for the good thoughts and well wishes!
