Apparently I'm a rotten parent who allowed my 9 y/o DS to take in his Binaca (breath spray) to school on Friday.

It was taken away from him after lunch when he was "caught" using it. I received a phone call from the teacher who took it away saying that breath spray has alcohol in it.

I honestly didn't even think about that . . .

Oh, give me a break!...Obviously this teacher didn't have
much else to do! LOL

Poor kid had to go around with bad breath all day!...

I have zero tolerance for "Zero Tolerance"

I was going to say that at our school district, no matter the age of the student, he/she would be suspended and the police might even be called in. That's our great policy that has been in effect for over 5 years now. Two students hit each other, the police are called and the parents and child have to go to the magistrate and pay a fine.

I would never have thought about there being alcohol in Binaca...interesting

Binaca

Concentrated Peppermint Breath Spray

*
A Binaca blast freshes breath instantly
*
Long Lasting
*
Sugar Free
*
Net wt. 0.2 oz. (approximately 140 sprays)

Ingredients: SD Alcohol 38B, Isobutane, Glycerine, Flavor, Water, Sodium Saccharin

SD 38 alcohol is simply 38% ethanol in water with a special
denaturant [SD]. Denatured alcohols are used for many household products.
Examples would include ethanol used in perfumes, aftershaves and for
cleaners. Beverage ethanol is used for drinking and must meet strict
production standards because it will be used for human consumption.
The denaturing process makes SD 38 not suitable for use in beverages.
The fact that SD 38 also has water added to it makes it not useable as a
fuel.

You couldn't drink the stuff if you WANTED to.

Do the people that make these "zero tolerance" policies realize how stupid some things in them are? Why don't they revize them to show a little common sense?

Dumb, dumb, dumb! Common sense is truly dead in the sphere of "Zero Tolerance".

Listerine makes those strips, if your DS still wants to have something at school.

I'm very sure he was going to crack that Binaca open and spike the milk cartons...jeez...that's ridiculous. And you are NOT a bad parent.

Wouldn't even HAVE to crack it open. Just SPRAY it 140 times.

Did he really get "in trouble" or was it just taken away? From the original post it doesn't sound like it was a huge deal. In grade school bringing almost anything to school except schoolwork is against the rules and gets sent back home - no big deal.

My goodness! That's rediculous. I've never tried it, but I'm guessing it would take more than one little thing of Binaca to even give a 9 year old a buzz.
