Hey I was just curious...has anyone ever taken a motion sickness drug to 'ward' off motion sickness? I thought about giving my 15 year old a half of a Bonine (dramamine) in the morning before going to the parks. She is very scared of riding anything that might remotely make her sick. She even feels funny in Omnimax theaters. So I read on here how well Bonine works and thought...hey maybe it would work to give it to here before we leave the room...and maybe she would enjoy herself more, knowing she isn't going to get sick. What do you think...and have you ever done this? I also asked the pharmasist about taking it when she starts to feel sick, how long will it take to take the feeling away and he said 20 minutes. (give or take) But I am afraid to do it this way cause I am afraid if I wait to give it to her 'if' the ride makes her sick, she won't want to ride anything else, medication or not!

What are your thoughts?

This is going to sound odd, but have you considered ginger pills instead? For most people they work even better than motion sickness pills without the drowsy side effects. :)

If I know that I'm going to be riding anything that spins, or moves alot...Mission Space, Star Tours, RNRC, etc. I take the dramamine with breakfast and by the time we are in the park and I'm ready to ride...I'm good to go! One year when we were at Disney Quest, I didn't think I'd need it...ah, it's just a bunch of video games. DUH! I got queasy on Aladdin's Magic Carpets. Before I had DS some 14 years ago, I could ride anything without any problems, but since I always take dramamine when I'm at the parks. Trust me, getting sick from motion sickness isn't fun...the Florida heat doesn't help it at all!

So, if you decided to give some to your DD...just follow the directions. Some people do have dry mouth with it, but I personally haven't.

Best wishes for a motion sickness free trip!

I get sick just thinking of certain rides, I take a dramimine and it works pretty well. Sometimes I think its all in my mind. :rotfl:

No I haven't tried ginger pills or any pills yet. Most of the time, we don't take our kids to amuzement parks cause it is a waste of money since they don't like rides. Now that they are older, we thought this would be the time to do Disney. I don't like the idea of spending all this money and have it be ruined with motion sickness. My kids pretty much are like this...if they ride something and it either scares the hell out of them or makes them sick...that will pretty much doom the rest of the day for them for rides. Whether or not the ride will actually make them sick or not, if they already got sick once, they just aren't getting on any more. So....I do not want this happening. I want EVERYONE to enjoy themselves. I am not sure about experimenting on seeing what works...that is why I am posting this and getting your opinions on what works for you...then I will decide and hope to make the right choice for my kids...

Thanks everyone ahead of time for your help!!!
8 more days!!! YIPPIE!

Understood. :) I know ginger pills work for me for seasickness; I tried them after seeing it on Mythbusters of all things, where they confirmed that they worked. Who would have thunk? :confused3 I'm definitely doing it for disney this time because my DD is adamant about riding the teacups, which normally would be a no-go for me because Dramamene completely knocks me out.

I used Bonine a few times, and found I need to start taking it a few days ahead of time so that my system adjusts to it and I get over the unbearable drowsiness in time to actually anjoy anything. I can still remember trying to lift my very heavy feet and fighting to keep myself upright in line the first time I used it. Hmmm... I think I'll give those ginger pills a try!

Me and my DH saw this on MythBusters also. He took ginger pills when he went offshore for work and never got sea sick. I think it's worth a try.

Oh yes, I will second (or third!) BlindTyldak's suggestion of ginger and the capsules are probably the handiest way to take it though there's also the option of using fresh ginger root and mixing a small bit of it with boiling water to take as a drink. I did that when I was pregnant and it really helped with morning sickness though I'm guessing there's probably not a huge demand for fresh ginger in the WDW park stores. :lmao: So yeah, get the capsules in advance! Ginger biscuits help too. Good luck!

What ever you decide to try, try it at home before you go to Disney so you can know there won't be any side effects.

On our first trip my DH wanted to be sure he could have fun, so he asked around at work and ended up with Bonine... he thought it would be his magic pill.

WELL, he took it the first day and got so tired he couldn't keep his eyes open! And it wasn't completely out of his system for 2 days! The people who recommended it had never had that reaction... so it effects everyone differently.

So maybe you could give what ever you think is best a try... just to be sure before you head out to Disney, and if there's something at home that sets off the "sickness feeling" (like looking out the side window in the car) then you could test it out too.

That said -- on our last trip he tried the ginger pills, that others have recommended, and they definitely helped with no side effects at all.

I'm sure you know, there are lots of rides & attractions at Disney that don't have any spinning or dipping, and don't make even the queasiest among us sick. You can get a list of the rides to avoid (the ones that aren't outwardly obvious), and then you'll know you'll be safe. There is plenty to do and see even if your feet never leave the ground!

I always take Dramamine...

What works for me is the LESS DROWSY DRAMAMINE formula. Take it at night, starting the night before you arive. I take 2 but she can take 1. Every dose works for 24 hours, so if she does get a little drowsy she will be sleeping anyway. When she wakes up she will have a full day without motion sickness and absolutely no side effects. Just take 1 pill every night at bedtime while you are there.

I tried ginger pills. They did not work for me and all day long I had "ginger belly". All I could taste all day was ginger...It was like I ate an entire bag of ginger snaps. Bonine made me feel very groggy and I did not like the way it made me feel. There is a big difference in Bonine and Less drowsy dramamine.

There is now way I could do any ride without Less drowsy dramamine. I feel great and it allows me to enjoy every ride without feeling dizzy, queazy or that I have to puke....I just feel normal.

You can buy it at any drugstore, just make sure it is the less drowsy formula. Buy it and let her try one by taking it at night and see how she feels the next day.

When I went to the local Vitamin Store to look at ginger pills, they had several varieties with different strengths. What is recommended?

A friend of mine said that anytime she is on a boat she uses sea bands. She thinks it will help me on rides. Did anyone ever use them? Did they work?

You betcha! My husband, the man of the house...HAS to take a Bonine before riding the roller coasters! :rotfl2: Seriously though, I have a bit of motion sickness my self but I don't really need the med. unless I'm riding something like Mission Space..but oh, I don't have to worry about THAT anymore do I? :rotfl2: On the side, I've heard a lot of great reviews about the "new" Mission Space add on. :thumbsup2

Not knowing what side effects you'll encounter you may want to get the wristbands (acupressure) for seasickness. They worked for DH on our last cruise.

Yes, I've used them and they really worked for me! My dad has a sailboat and when we go out in the Gulf of Mexico I get seasick. Dramimine makes me VERY sleepy so I tried the sea bands once and they were great!

Basically, they looked like those sweat wristbands that athletes wear (only thinner, about an inch wide I believe). They had a little "bump" on the inside which you place over your veins/pressure points on your wrists. The bumps were about the size of a 1/2 pea if I remember correctly, and they didn't bother me at all.

My DS takes the less drowsy Dramamine--he gets carsick easily. He's done pretty well on it!

My son, gets motion sickeness from the rides and the airplane. This all started when he was 11 and he was so scared to try anything. The next time we flew to WDW he was 14 so we gave him Bonnine for the airplane and he also took one each day of our trip that we were going to the parks. We have also cruised and he used the same Bonnine.
He had no side affects and it did not make him sleepy like Dramamine did. He goes on all the rides now and is very happy to not have to have an upset stomach...
The age of your daughter you would not need to cut the pill in half, one would be fine for her and should last the whole day. Make sure to take it at the same time each day.
Ginger did nothing for any of us except give me a headache and everything tasted like ginger...ick...

Good luck with your trip, hope your DD can ride what she wants and keep a calm tummy.

Bev

I have taken non-drowsy Dramamine before going to MGM, because Star Tours and RNR make me dizzy. I have not had a problem with motion sickness after taking it. It worked great and I did not feel sick after riding!
