Drone show at Disney Springs!

Went tonight at 830. Still the short version unless that's all it will be.

Very cool and seems more like a preview of things to come.

Not worth going just for that IMO, but probably worth stopping if your there anyway. Nice decor and atmosphere down there though, a great night.

Where did you watch from?

Where did you watch from?

The walkway to the left of characters in flight, was busy but it's a long walkway so dispersed well. It appeared to be the best view area.

Saw it tonight, 4 minutes long. see it if you happen to be at springs anyway. once and done for me.

You can start the 5-8 year countdown on fireworks shows. Seriously... I doubt Disney designs another fireworks show after the ones they have. Or if they do, the fireworks will be a small portion of the show, and projection/drones will make up the vast majority.

Having seen the drone show over Christmas (all 3 pitiful minutes of it), and actually having an understanding as a pilot of how things can physically move through the air, I can 1000% confidently state that no matter how many drones are in a drone show (10,000 100,000 pick a number), drone shows will never look and sound like a fireworks show. Ever. It's just not (and never will be) the same kind of powerful show that a fireworks show is. Things that blow up elicit a visceral reaction in most people that watching drones slowly moving between preset patterns is never going to do.

Hopefully fireworks shows won't go the way of being able to get peanuts on your ice cream sundae. In other words, 99% of the population is not able to do something they enjoy because of the 1% who have an allergy (or in the case of fireworks, find them "scary").

I really loved the Drone show at DS this past Christmas season. It was something different. Very pretty. I hope they continue this at DS. :goodvibes

It was actually 5 :)

I found the show to be very cool. Sure its not a 12 minute fireworks show like Wishes but for a free show at Disney Springs it was great.

The night we saw it it was most definitely not 5. It was 3 minutes and change. Not sure why, other than it was a somewhat windy night. Characters in Flight was having a hard time getting the balloon down right before the show. Also, Wishes is a "free show" if you go watch it from the Poly or GF beach, which is about the distance (or at least seemed similar) you are from the drone show when standing near Characters in Flight. Thus, I'm not sure how "free" has anything to do with it. Some other gripes:

1) The LEDs on the drones were faint. Fireworks are, well, on FIRE and thus not limited by a need to conserve battery life, so they are (and always will) be much more impressive and visible.

2) The wind cutoff for a drone show is much lower than for a fireworks show. Oh, but I forgot, it's never windy in FL ;)

3) For me, at least, it doesn't elicit any sort of reaction. I got about as much thrill from it as watching ads on a LED billboard.

Is the technology neat? Yes. But just because you can do something with technology, doesn't mean you should :)

Well obviously this isn't your cup of tea. Reviews have been very positive. I myself thought the show was great.

1. I did not find the LEDs faint.
2. I never said anything about wind so that remark is uncalled for.
3. You might be hard to please then.

I don't see why Disney shouldn't do things with drones. The possibilities are endless.

They are faint compared to a firework. That was my point.

My list of gripes was with drone shows vs. fireworks shows, so that comment had nothing to do with you. Narcissistic much?

3. You might be hard to please then.

Yep, that's pretty accurate, if by hard to please you mean not falling all over myself to praise everything Disney does.

I don't see why Disney shouldn't do things with drones. The possibilities are endless.

I don't see why they shouldn't do things with drones too, but I don't want to see drones replace fireworks shows because of some mistaken belief that drone shows will somehow be "better" or "cooler" than fireworks. And for the record, the possibilities of drones vis-a-vis what Disney can do with them are NOT endless. The possibilities are pretty much limited to displaying colored lighting patterns in the sky. Period. As someone who is hoping to become an engineer, you should have figured that out already.

Maybe from a distance they are faint compared to a firework but I didn't find them that way.

I am not pleased with everything Disney does you should know that by now about me. Disney has done plenty I don't like.

We don't know if drones will replace fireworks shows yet. They might just become part of them. They also could use drones for other things. Drone permits Disney filed shoes them holding large character figures. That's different than LEDs in the sky. It's a new technology that is bound to improve that's why the possibilities are endless. As an aspiring engineer I am very excited about the possibilities with drones.

The LEDs could be seen from DHS and Epcot. Not faint.

No they don't go boom and rock your chest. However, a large enough portion of Disney's audience (i.e. your peanut analogy) don't like the boom and begin crying. Not the end of a Disney day they want to project.

And... as I've always said: Fireworks are not cheap. Sure... parties, New Years, etc.. as a special event. But, due to cost, environmental concerns, and cost - they will be gone from daily rotation to be replaced by projection and drones. Maybe not today, but within single digit years.

It will not be popular, people will complain. It won't be the same. However, it will happen. And yes, I know I am in the minority. So save it and throw it back at me in 8 years when it looks like it will fail. But it won't. FAR FAR FAR too much money on the table. And no one, despite how popular and impressive they are, pays a full price ticket BECAUSE there are fireworks. They are a bonus, capable of being replaced by a less visceral show for a fraction of the spend.

I don't know about endless, and I hope they keep fireworks as well. But have heard of them carrying video screens etc, maybe ballons or dragons etc.

The first two patents cover different methods of producing light shows, either with large, flexible screens lifted by small remote-controlled craft or swarms of drones that are each fitted with a light and act as "flixels" or floating pixels. In one, the screens could be large projection surfaces made of mesh that would allow wind to pass through, or they could actually produce their own images: Disney's application suggests loosely woven strips of LEDs. The drones would be able to detect each other and work in concert, according to a central program.

I agree with you to an extent. I think at first drones will be an addition to fireworks shows. Then we will start to see less and less fireworks and more projections and drones. They won't just get rid of fireworks altogether at one time and replace me with drones.

Yet again, you took personally a comment that was meant as a general comment. I realize there are many things you don't like about what Disney does.
