I am trying to plan a trip to New York City. The last time I went was in 2000 and I took a bus. I would like to drive but was wondering what the options are to park and take a train in or stay at a hotel near a train station or ferry.

I regularly drive into NYC a lot of hotels work with parking garages near them to offer parking discounts if you stay with them. The parking is not cheap I would say it averages $100 a day. I have also had luck street parking but I normally only stay a night or two (I am in CT so it’s local for me)

There are parking options outside the city and you could take the train in. I have left my car in train lots in CT for a night or two. Some charge and some are free. Some are in areas I wouldn’t want to leave my car so I’m picky which ones I use.

I prefer to train in, it’s less hassle IMO but friends of mine prefer driving because they are not light packers and need the car space. I’m fine with a backpack for the weekend.

Jersey city-Exchange Place has a bunch of hotels and you can take the PATH or ferry in (PATH is cheaper/more convenient). You can find parking in a Jersey City garage for $35-40 a day.

Parking at the Hamilton NJ transit train station is cheaper, about $15 a day but you are looking at 45 minutes + to get into the city.

There are garages in the northern part of Brooklyn that run about $35 a day if you decide to drive into the city. Or the pier 40 parking garage on the West side Highway is one of the less expensive Manhattan garages.

When we drove from Toronto, we stayed here

The bus stop is right outside the hotel and it takes you directly to the Port Authority which is very close to Times Square/42nd street. The cost was about $5/person (pre covid) and runs on very regular schedule. I am pretty sure its the number 320 bus and it takes about 20 mins depending on the time of the day.

The main reasons we ended up staying outside of the city
-much less expensive
-large room with sleeping for 6 (almost all of the hotels righ in the city were so tiny and with four adults it just didn't cut it)
-free really great breakfast (not just carbs) for Hyatt members (free to sign up)
-free parking
