It never would have occurred to me to be concerned about stopping at a rest stop during the day. We picnic for almost all of our "on the road" meals, it just kills too much time to go to a sit down restaurant and I'm not remotely tempted by the fast good options. If I have a choice, I prefer a scenic overlook or a local park.
At night, we stop at staffed rest areas, these typically have restaurants, Panera type restaurants, libraries, or Quik Chek type places, to stretch our legs and use the bathrooms.
